LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Gary, almost two years ago we answered a help-wanted ad in
your publication. Subsequently, we moved from our caretaker
position in Minnesota to a new one in Georgia. In a nutshell, we
are very, very happy. The folks that placed the ad in The
Caretaker Gazette, are extremely generous, caring and always show
their appreciation. The property we are taking care of is
beautiful! Thank you for being the matchmaker! The move to
Georgia has worked out better than we ever expected. When I get
your emails encouraging us to subscribe to the Gazette again, I
smile and wonder if I should send along a note. So, this time we
did. Thanks, Ken and Dianna R., Stillwater, MN

Hi Ken and Dianna, thanks so much for writing - and for doing
your wonderful Caretaker Profile story which we have published on
Page 8 of this issue. It's always a pleasure to hear that we
helped connect excellent caretakers with good property owners.
Thanks again for your nice email. Please stay in touch.

Dear Gary, what a pleasant surprise to see all the wonderful
responses to my help-wanted email blast! I never expected to
receive so many responses so quickly. I was so impressed with the
quality of your subscribers. I've interviewed several of your
best and I think I'm ready to offer the position to a nice single
woman who came through your email. I can relax knowing my
property is in great hands while I'm away. Thank you, Janet K.,
Burlington, VT

Hi Janet, thanks for letting us know about the success of your
help wanted ad that went out as part of one of our email
broadcasts. I'm glad to hear that you received a great response
from our qualified subscribers. I appreciate your compliment
about the quality of the people we have as subscribers. We've had
similar compliments over the years about our subscribers from
other property owners. I'm sure your property will be in good
hands. Take care and safe travels.

I just wanted to offer my most sincere thanks for your wonderful
service over the last year. I have been able to check out a
number of very specific opportunities I would never have found
otherwise, and currently have three excellent options to choose
from because of the Gazette. I had even thought of advertising
myself if I had failed to find just what I am seeking, but with
your almost daily updates there was never a need. Hopefully, one
of these choices will be made in the next few days, and will
prove to be my long-term retreat. Should this not materialize, I
will certainly renew my subscription posthaste and post my own
Situations-Wanted ad, as well. Again, much appreciation for the
wonderful service you folks provide! Lars H., Reno, NV

Thanks for sharing your positive experience, Lars. I'm happy
to hear that our email broadcasts have brought you a variety of
excellent caretaking options. Best of luck in making your
selection and please let us know which caretaking option will
prove to be your next long-term retreat. Thanks again.

Hi Gary, thanks for the email reminder to renew my subscription.
I think I've been with you now for more than a decade and I need
to tell you that your publication has changed my life for the
better. I never knew about the caretaking field and never
imagined I could make a way of life out of it, and save so much
money in rent-free living as well. Thanks to you and the Gazette
I have seen so much of the world and made friends wherever I've
gone. I look forward to many more years of this! Christine M.,
Portland, OR

Hi Christine, thank you for your nice email message. We're
always happy to read that the Gazette played a role in helping
our subscribers find a rewarding lifestyle. Thank you for being a
long-time subscriber and best of luck to you in the coming
years.

sustainability center offers a work for trade setup and we are in
need of more dynamic individuals to add to our group of

accommodation, vehicles, bikes, surf boards, snorkeling gear and
much more for you to utilize. Winter is here, which means the
surf is also prime (some nice and glassy triple overheads were
spotted only a couple of days ago)! We believe in creating
positive change, so our Healing Centre is constructed using
sustainable methods and organic materials. We are a non-profit
organization so we rely solely on donations from the community
and skilled volunteers to complete this project. We pride
ourselves on our healthy lifestyle choices and therefore prohibit
the consumption of alcohol, use of drugs, tobacco, marijuana or
the participation of any illegal activities. Vegan and vegetarian
food is served for all the volunteers with no red meat available
on site. Please only inquire if you meet these healthy lifestyle
habits and wish to contribute to the collective consciousness by
working on this new Healing Centre. As long as you are flexible
to do what is needed each day, and have integrity, we have an
environment that you will love! We hope you will respect our
goals and cherish your time within this incredible opportunity.
Please send an email to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX explaining why you
feel you would be a good fit here. Aloha.

ALOHA! We are currently looking for four volunteers beginning in
the first week of February 2016. Our backpacker hostel,
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, is located directly on the edge of the Blue
Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean in beautiful historic Kapa'a Town on
the island of Kauai. Kapa'a was voted one of the top 10 most
beautiful towns in America. Kauai is the "Garden Isle" and is by
far the most beautiful of all the Hawaiian Islands, in fact more
beautiful than all the others put together. Kauai has a lush
tropical environment with a cooling Pacific Trade Wind breeze
coming through the hostel. People travel here from around the
world to hike some of the most amazing trails in the world (see
Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon). The sun and moon rise come up
directly in back of the Kauai Beach House Hostel, an amazing
experience every day, just so you can begin and end your day in
this tropical paradise of Kauai in blissful surroundings. We are
looking for some great helpers to join our staff! You must be
outgoing, energetic, hard-working, and able to show the "aloha
spirit" of the island. We will set up a Skype interview to get to
meet you and see if you would be a great fit! We currently are
looking for helpers with hostel experience (preferred but not
necessary). Our volunteers do a variety of tasks, although mainly
it involves any of the following: housekeeping - cleaning the
hostel and kitchen, bathrooms, pulling sheets off beds,
organizing the hostel, etc., reception (two month minimum stay) -
checking people in and out, ensuring people have paid, answering
the telephone, taking cash payments and running credit card
payments, maintenance - the tropical environment keeps us busy
with upkeep. This job would be varied depending on the needs. If
you have any maintenance experience, like painting, plumbing,
electric, let us know! But as long as you are a good helper in
any category you will be welcome if you are ready to learn,
because the experience you get here is an actual training in the
hospitality field, and the many facets in the operation and
running of a hostel. In return for your help of approximately 21
hours per week or less, you will enjoy a nice bed and your
utilities, including of course hot showers, full kitchen and
other freebies like Wi-Fi. We all help prepare a weekly staff
meal paid for by the hostel. We also provide volunteers with
basic staples like rice and beans to add to your meals everyday
if you like. When they leave, Guests often leave fresh food for
the staff. There is a four week minimum stay, but we prefer
people to stay for two to three months. Longer term help could be
discussed after you have been here for three months. The
island-wide bus service stops in both directions just outside of
our hostel, so everything is within reach. There is also an 11
mile bike path that touches our property right outside of our
hostel. It runs right along the edge of the ocean; it is
spectacular! You can walk to 20 restaurants; there are 60 in
Kapa'a Town, and many are international. There is also live music
in Kapa'a seven nights a week at different pubs and clubs. For
more details, please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

magical place to learn about spirituality and sustainable living.
The property is entirely off-the-grid, running on solar power and

above 25 but would consider you if you have skills in vegetarian
cooking, Yoga instructorship, permaculture and gardening. Aloha.

ICELAND

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX VOLUNTEERS needed in the Highlands of
Iceland on the Famous Kjölur Road from August 24 to
September 7. The Icelandic highlands, or 'the interior', are a
true pearl to all nature lovers and outdoor people. It is
accessible on 4WD cars and most routes involve crossing
un-bridged rivers. If you really want to get away from it all,
the interior of Iceland is like nothing you have ever
experienced. The mountainous center of the island, with its rocky
deserts, craggy mountain peaks, ice caps, volcanoes, hidden
valleys and hot springs, is an awesome and untouched wilderness.
The interior was almost totally inaccessible until recently.
Journeys across the interior were never undertaken lightly, such
travel was risky and lives were often lost. Today the interior is
crossed by two mountain roads, via Kjölur and Sprengisandur,
which are only open in summer, after the snow has melted in
spring. Volunteers will be staying close to the glacier
Hofsjökull and near to the rivers Hvita and Pjorsa. The
mountains in the area, which reach up to 1,500 meters, were
formed during a volcanic eruption in the later part of the ice
age. The area is still dynamic and great geothermal activity
takes place in the surroundings. The environment is very diverse,
both in shape and color. The mountains are weathered and have
very little continuous growth, as the forces of nature, like
glaciers, water flow, ice bursts etc. have been fast working in
these mountain highlands. In this project, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
volunteers will work on diverse environmental tasks, including
repairing walking paths and making steps in steep parts of the
paths, removing old fences, clearing litter on the walking paths,
and preparing the area for the winter. Volunteers will also help
with revegetation in some areas around and other tasks, depending
on the needs of the host and the weather conditions. The host of
this project is a group of locals developing the area with
alternative tourism services, including running a series of huts
in this isolated area and offering services to travelers and
hikers. As the landscape is raw, the work is physically demanding
but also rewarding. Volunteers will be hosted in a local mountain
hut, sleeping in shared rooms on mattresses on the floor. Please
bring your own sleeping bag. The facilities are very basic and
volunteers are expected to show consideration for their
companions. Volunteers will receive food ingredients and be in
charge of cooking and cleaning. Please do not forget some
traditional food from your home country for the international
evening. The location of the camp is remote and very isolated.
Free time activities are mostly hiking and trekking in the area
as there is no transportation available or possibility to
organize transport to different sites. Volunteers need to be
prepared for physical and demanding work. Bring warm winter
clothes as the project takes place outside and the weather can be
very cold. To learn more, please visit XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE
Caretaking in the Georgia Hill Country - Ken and Dianna Rott
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Photography, Videography, Nature/Outdoors, and Travel
Quote: "Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety
percent how you respond to it." Charles Swindoll

Ken and Dianna

Our story, like many others, is a bit unique. How did we go from
growing up in a small town in Minnesota to being caretakers in
the Hill Country of Georgia? It certainly wasn't anything we
dreamed of doing, but now that we are here, it has become an
absolute blessing.
We are Ken and Dianna, in our mid 50's, healthy and adventurous.
We have always enjoyed traveling, photography, and seeing the
beauty of God's creation around us. Ken is mechanically inclined
and a 'fixer' who enjoys an occasional challenge. Dianna enjoys
cleaning, organizing, and simplifying life. We both have shared
the desire to serve and help others. So for many years we
volunteered time teaching and coaching. We had owned and
remodeled a couple of different homes in the small town where we
had grown up. Sometimes we think that owning your own home can be
a bit over-rated!
We also spent many years trying to have a family. After over 10
years of infertility, lost pregnancies, surgeries, and
unsuccessful IVF procedures, we let go of the idea and focused on
work. We both have a wide range of skills from the various
positions we have held, and the business that Ken owned. Life
took us on an unexpected journey when we adopted six children
from another country. That adventure took us from owning a home
to renting, then eventually caretaking. We decided it was more
important to invest in the education, future, and spiritual
foundation of our children than continuing to dump money into a
large money pit house.
After almost 10 years our jobs were changing because of the
difficult economy in 2009, and Ken was offered a position at a 95
unit condominium complex as caretaker. This position would
include salary, benefits, and a house. We had less than a month
to move. It was another blessing. Unfortunately after three years
the homeowner association board members changed and life became a
bit uncertain. Our youngest was a senior in high school and had
already committed as a student athlete to Auburn University, in
Auburn, Alabama. So we began looking south for potential
caretaking positions, thinking that eventually we would try to
move out of the cold and snow and be closer to her. We had
already purchased a fifth wheel trailer that was parked in the
Auburn area for when we would travel south for visits, and
eventually we anticipated going on the road once she was out of
college.
Ken applied for our current position from an ad in The Caretaker
Gazette. We didn't hear anything for months, then in September of
2013 he received a call wondering if we were still interested.
Sure, why not! We were not really looking forward to another cold
winter up north. After a couple of on-line interviews and
background checks, they offered us the position. We had to be on
site by October 1st. We had a weekend to think about it, but we
accepted. So far it has truly been another blessing!
Some things we would like to share about this experience are that
we had been through Georgia a couple of times before. Especially
during the times when touring college campuses, so we were a bit
familiar with the area. The owners of the property were able to
do background checks on us, but we had to figure out how to
verify that they existed and that this was a real deal. Ken used
modern technology to reasonably alleviate any doubts or fears of
making a 1,200 mile move. They also gave us a virtual tour of the
property and the caretaker house via FaceTime. It became apparent
to us that the owners must be good people because of how well
they spoke of their previous caretakers, even though things
didn't work out and their situation had become strained.
The position here is not full-time (26 hours per week) and has
split duties. Inside duties that were slated for the 'cleaning
lady' and the outside labor for a healthy able male. Because of
Dianna's background and skill-set, she has been able to do the
indoor duties and a lot of the outdoor duties. Ken does the
duties that require heavy machinery and experience. The position
is a basic trade out for living arrangements, so Ken needed to
have a job lined up for another income. Dianna however, needed to
commit to being on the property because of some particular health
issues of one of the owners. Also Dianna needed to be available
to help with animals if they were out of town. Before we moved
from Minnesota, Ken had lined up job interviews and we had
located a new church family in the area. Knowing that we would be
very far from family and friends it was important to have some
type of connection.
We have learned over the years in these caretaking situations
that it is so important to listen to the needs, spoken and
unspoken, of the individuals (and animals) and treat them as you
would want to be treated if you were in their place. Being
willing to learn the culture and 'terminology' of the area is
key! We feel very content, at this point to have landed this
property caretaking assignment, and we plan to be caretakers for
many years to come.

MEXICO

HOUSESIT/RENT in South Yucatan. This is directed to a person or
couple who love warm weather all year, love keeping up the
grounds, and can maintain a home. Easy-going and friendly is much
more important than Spanish language skills. This ad doesn't
quite fit anywhere because it could be just housesitting, it
could be renting part or whole, or it could be a money-making
rental-type deal with you living in the caretaker's quarters.
We've been trying to sell the place for the last 10 months with
nary any interest (this puzzles us as we've lowered the price
considerably). The main requirements are to live there full-time
which provides security, maintain the lush 1/3 acre grounds,
repair and maintain the home as required, and manage the whole of
any rental operation you want to set up. I would prefer a minimum
one-year commitment and the strength and skills to maintain the
yard and the house. If you like the idea of answering rental
inquiries and hosting visitors that would be your option and you
keep the receipts. I'm only half-heartedly trying to sell and it
probably won't sell at this price even though it's been lowered
several times. If you were living in the caretaker's portion, you
could probably stay on even if it did sell because the buyers
would need the same service. And I could throw in a
1%-of-selling-price severance if you had to move out with a
couple months' notice as real estate transactions are quite slow
down there. If you had the skills, I could hire you to build a
second floor out of concrete block, stucco, and small t-shaped
reinforced concrete beams. Maybe build a concrete and decorative
steel wall around the place first. Compensation: three scenarios:
1) you pay $150/month for the caretaker's quarters plus utilities
plus maintain the house and yard, or 2) you pay $300/month and
live in the main part of the house plus utilities plus
maintenance, or 3) (my preferred option of course) rent out the
whole building for $400/month and rent out the caretaker's
quarters or the main house. You keep the rental receipts. Water,
electric and fast Wi-Fi are about $75/month. If you are coming as
a couple, the caretaker's quarters has a medium sized kitchen, a
small bathroom with shower, and a medium-sized bedroom. You could
squeeze in together during the winter tourist season and then use
the whole house the rest of the time. Hopefully, a well-qualified
person(s) will choose the $300 or $400 option; I'm totally
flexible on this. The current caretaker's quarters are not
furnished so the first thing we'd have to do is go buy
furnishings and kitchen utensils in Chetumal along with a more
comfortable couch for the main house living room. Please email
