LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, I advertised in The Gazette in 2015 for a house/cat/dog
sitter for January 2016 and was amazed by the amount of interest
I received. It was a difficult process but we whittled down the
many responses to two - and then flipped a coin to choose! We
found a wonderful couple who took great care of our home and
animals - they even had dinner ready for our return. I would
thoroughly recommend The Caretaker Gazette and am looking at
advertising again later this year - I love it! Thanks for a great
publication, Juliette S., UK

Hi Juliette, thanks for sharing your great advertising success
with us. I'm glad that your ad in The Caretaker Gazette resulted
in so many qualified candidates. It sounds like your home was in
great hands while you were away. Please keep us in mind if you
need to find great pet/housesitters again.

Thanks to my help-wanted ad in your publication I have a number
of candidates for my housesitting position. Do you have any
advice or direction about a legal contract that I might use as a
starting point for an agreement between myself and the live-in
housesitter I intend to hire? Please let me know. Thanks, Joshua
D., Armonk, NY

Hi Joshua, you will not find the kind of legal contract you
are looking for online. While we don't give legal advice, we have
a suggested Housesitting Agreement that you can use as a template
to add to, revise, etc. Many property owners who have advertised
with us take this agreement and modify it to fit their unique
needs and circumstances. We can email it to you right after this.
(NOTE: if anyone else is interested in our Housesitting
Agreement, just send us an email at caretaker@caretaker.org and
request it by putting "Sample Housesitting Agreement" in the
Subject Line).

Hi Gary just wanted to let you know my Situations-Wanted ad in
your email blast resulted in several responses for my
caretaker-available ad. Given my situation as an older grad
student in the process of a career change I decided the best job
for me was the caretaker position in Alaska. This will work out
best with my school schedule and I think give me good experience.
Thanks to you and your staff for providing such great service.
Janet G., Washington, DC

Thanks for your email, Janet! It's good to know that you were
able to find a position that works with your school schedule and
will help you in your new career. Congratulations and best of
luck with your caretaking position, school, and your career
change.

I just wanted to email you to say thank you! Almost ten years ago
I placed an ad in The Caretaker Gazette looking for someone who
was willing to spend the winter months at my rural Colorado
property when I wasn't able to be there. I received at least a
dozen responses to my ad and I ended up corresponding with
several of the most interesting and qualified applicants. I
finally decided to employ a woman who had a similar background to
mine. She had a job in nearby New Mexico during the spring and
summer months. She has returned to my Colorado home every winter
since then. I have upgraded so she has free Internet and the
power is on so the house is always warm and well lit. What a
great arrangement it's been for both of us! We both owe it all to
the Gazette and for you being able to find room in your issue
right on your advertising closing date. I've been able to keep my
home in a place I love but can't always be in. Jake W., Boulder,
CO.

Hi Jake, thanks for writing and sharing your story with us.
I'm glad to see that your one ad that ran in the Gazette nearly
ten years ago has resulted in a long-term arrangement with the
woman from New Mexico! We have heard of caretaking arrangements
made that have lasted more than ten years, especially when it's a
win-win situation like you have there.

energetic individual or couple to oversee our historic family
property located in the heart of Steinbeck Country in
California's Salinas Valley. A passion for living on and caring
for land in a remote, natural setting is a must. Day-to-day
duties involve routine upkeep and efficiently dealing with the
many issues that arise on a rural property. We graze cattle on
our ranch from mid-October to the end of May, depending on

frequency. Currently a full-time ranch manager lives on the
property. His retirement is planned following hiring and

fill this role. We need someone able to work with our current
manager and with us to learn ranch systems and assume increased

a monthly stipend to be negotiated. Initially, the applicant will
need to provide his/her own vehicle and proof of insurance.
Medical insurance is not provided. Worker's compensation will

be negotiated.
Requirements:
* Ability to pass a background check

FREE RENT available for dog professionals (couple only) in
Encino. We are a non-profit small dog rescue in search for a
responsible and stable live-in couple, with at least one person
who has extensive experience as either a vet-tech, dog trainer,
or very experienced dog handler. A groomer may also be
considered. Must know how to approach and handle timid,
frightened, shy, and sometimes aggressive dogs. This arrangement
would be an exchange of a one bedroom unit on a property that
also houses the organization's office headquarters for your time
and care for our dogs. Most of our dogs are under 20 pounds and
we are not focused on one specific breed. Although you must love
dogs, you may not have your own pet as you will be required to
care for approximately 10 dogs on the property. There is already
a stray cat on the property that relies on us for food and water,
and companionship. Responsibilities will include general
caretaking of the property, including cleaning, maintenance of
yard and office headquarters, daily dog care such as feeding,
medicating, and exercising, keeping the property tidy and
presentable while ensuring noise level is kept to a minimum, and
showing dogs to potential adopters and fosters by appointment
when needed. You must be comfortable with other employees and
volunteers to be on the property during the daytime hours, and
you must be comfortable with dogs in your living quarters when
necessary. We are not looking for someone who simply needs free
rent. We are looking for someone who is passionate about dogs and
rescuing who doesn't mind being surrounded by dogs all day long.
Ideally, one of you would be a Vet Tech, trainer, or similar
dog-professional while the other may have a part-time day-job. As
long as someone is always on the property each morning and each
night to ensure they are always monitored. This means that if you
go out at night to dinner and a movie, you must enlist a
volunteer for the hours that you are gone if available, as long
as you never leave the property unattended when our staff is not
there. The property is clean, safe, and basic. It has
approximately 700 sq. ft. tile floors, laundry, stove,
refrigerator, and plenty of outdoor space, not all of which will
be used for the dogs, air-conditioning room and plenty of
daylight. Absolutely no smoking, marijuana use, or drug use of
any kind. A refundable security deposit of $1,000 is required. If
you feel that you are the right couple who live and breathe dog
rescue and wish to devote your lives to them, please send us your
qualifications and why you feel that you are the right caretakers
to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and please be prepared for a background
check.

HAWAII

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A CARETAKER COUPLE for our Retreat Farm on the
Big Island for a minimum of six months. We are looking for a
couple or pair to share a farm caretaker roll as part of our
sustainable permaculture farm and retreat. The caretaker position
is an opportunity to grow, learn and immerse in an established
farm and community. The exchange would be from now to September
30 or possibly longer for about 20 hours a week per person. You
will be on Tuesday - Saturday for about four to five hours a day.
The situation includes rent, electric, and water and a share of
food from the farm as well as the potential to generate income
from farm sales. Some sales are already established and there is
room for more income generation for self-motivated, inspired
individuals. Ideally, this position would be filled with folks
who want to generate income off the farm and/or do paid
farm/construction work through existing connections we have which
could supplement their income. Our farm is located on 7.5 acres,
on the slopes of Mauna Loa Volcano with sweeping views of
Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau's City of Refuge on the Big Island of
Hawaii. We are a small community of people living on the land
creating a conscious model of food diversity, self-sufficiency
and holistic living. We host many folks from around the world as
renters, exchangers, guests in our guest house, and workshop
attendees. We love inspiring a holistic local lifestyle and being
a working demonstration of how we can do that. We have 15 years
of experience in sustainable agriculture and holistic living. On
the farm we have dozens of different types of trees and plants
growing that are integrated with our animals. Our animals include
poultry, ducks, rabbits, milking sheep and goats. We also have
over 150 Macadamia Nut trees. We are looking for inspired people
who want the opportunity to step into an established sustainable
farm and educational community and feel a sense of excitement and
engagement with the lifestyle and what it can offer. We would
love folks who want to connect with the local community, continue
to grow our collective networks, and share in a solution
oriented, fun, healthy lifestyle. We find folks who share our
desire for personal evolution in the midst of community evolution
will work best. We hope for open minded individuals with a
positive outlook on life who will bring energy, skills and
generative capacity to help the community and the farm function
well and flourish. We are looking for folks who have a passion
and curiosity for life, for cultivating self-reliance, and for
their own personal growth. In addition to farming, we enjoy
cooking, yoga, music, dance, qigong/neigung, meditation, reading,
swimming, snorkeling, hiking, exploring the islands, traveling,
learning about other cultures, etc. As a caretaker some of your
tasks will include feeding and watering animals, maintaining the
veggie gardens, mowing and weed-wacking and minor general upkeep
of the farm and community spaces. Because we have animals, there
are daily morning and afternoon activities that need to be tended
to. Morning and afternoon "Land Dance" is when the animals are
fed and watered, so the day is split, but afternoon timing can be
flexible. Housing is in one of our rustic 12x20 cabins with
plywood floor. There is a shared living room, an outside heated
shower as well as inside bathroom and kitchen facilities. High
speed internet is available in the communal house space as well.
The income that can be generated from the farm may include
macnuts, fruit, value added products, etc. We already have
relationships with several restaurants as avenues for sales and
farmer's markets. If this sounds like a good potential fit, we
would love to hear from you! Please write us with a resume or
letter of interest and experience as well as a photo doing
something you love. You can check out the farm at

Davy and Bonnie

Bonnie and I have been enjoying our caretaking job on a very
private island on the East Coast since November. Most of the time
we are all alone on the island. We love the beautiful island and
the owners have been wonderful. Dealing with the logistics of
food, mail, Internet, and electricity has been educational. We
now have enough food to see us through the next four months and
are hoping for lots of peace and quiet till then. The owners want
to contract us for another year and we have agreed to, but after
that we would like to explore caretaking jobs elsewhere, maybe in
a more tropical climate, as we both totally enjoy abundant
diverse plant life and warm temperatures. To prepare for writing
this, I read back through a bunch of examples of old Caretaker
Gazettes to steal ideas from past Caretaker Profiles. I mostly
caught myself reading about old caretaking jobs and remembering
how we have always talked and dreamed about the opportunities,
people and places. Bonnie has read most issues since she
discovered the Gazette in the 1980s. For years now, we've read,
fantasized, dreamed and discussed many issues together.
Our Thanks to Gary and Family. Many of the other caretaker's jobs
and lives we've read about seem much more eventful than ours. We
have been through some challenges but they've been small and
easily surmounted. Every day we patrol the shoreline of the
island and do a walk around inspection of each residence. We look
for storm damage to cottages and any fallen trees or branches. We
do landscaping, irrigation, litter control and building repairs
and maintenance as needed. We monitor and maintain the solar
system and the diesel generators. We keep a daily log and report
in weekly to the owner and to the Harbormaster. When islander
boats come in we assist with offloading. While caretaking, Bonnie
and I are lucky to have exceptional caretakers at our own home in
Washington State.
Just prior to this job Bonnie, her daughter, and I owned an
artisan bakery, which was completely different than anything any
of us had ever done before. Currently Bonnie's daughter is the
head baker and manager of the bakery. One idea that we have
thought of offering to others is to help setting up a bakery; we
have the recipes and skills for making breads, pastries,
repairing equipment, ordering and management. Also, Bonnie and I
also have a fairly complete set of skills in the building trades,
so another nice offering is to help others build, remodel and
repair structures.
Bonnie was a journeyman electrician and ran a successful home and
commercial building inspection business. I eventually became her
partner in the business and we worked as a team inspecting
properties and creating written reports. We especially enjoyed
commercial inspection projects that involved travel to other
states. Using a CAD program, one of my jobs was to create
detailed drawings of the structures and land. Installing solar
panels, batteries, and wiring an off grid system is a project we
could potentially undertake. In a completely different direction
Bonnie and I love growing things and we have experience in
farming, gardening, irrigation, green houses, vermiculture,
organic techniques, and cultivating exotic plants. We have a
shared interest in discovering and eating new fruits. Bonnie grew
up with horses and has experience caring for them, and we've both
raised chickens and other animals.
Both Bonnie and I are quiet; we like solitude, privacy, and are
easily self-fulfilling. We both are discreet, find it easy to
respect others, and while we do try to live our lives as best as
we can we feel that others have to find their own paths. Bonnie
and I get along by sometimes being so different at the same time.
And sometimes being so much the same at different times. Exactly
the same but completely different all at the same time. Bonnie
likes round things, I like things to be square. We eat
differently; Bonnie's diet includes meat while, I'm vegetarian. I
enjoy chocolate, Bonnie loves coffee. We try to share, sometimes,
but both know that the other indulges in their own thing mostly.
Bonnie likes to cooks meals, I eat raw foods, instant snack
foods, sprouts and roasted peanuts, more bittersweet chocolate
and instant soups. When I walk the beach I like the seaweed piles
(here I find rope and golf balls, today I found four balls) from
high tide. Bonnie walks at the edge of the water and loves to
look for bits of glass and old tiles (well-worn and the size of
beans is best). Neither of us wants anything to take home, as we
already have too much stuff at home. Bonnie reads fiction,
historical biographies, journals and travel books. I read
scientific stuff (fictional and real). We both like foreign
mystery books. Caretaking is a great time to read. Sometimes we
get so excited by whatever we're reading that we read it aloud to
the other. Mostly we're polite and act interested in the others
readings. New vocabulary words are always of interest to both of
us. I grow roots wherever I am, Bonnie wants to go somewhere new
(she's braver than I). We both love wherever we are. When we
finish our obligation here we plan to advertise once again in The
Caretaker Gazette for a new position!
