small hobby farm couple needs a caretaker for horses, sheep,

own will be provided in exchange for animal and yard work. This
would be excellent for a retired person. This is a rural Alabama
setting with a fish pond, woods, log cabin, and a covered bridge.

hectare farm with alfalfa in production and a comfortable two
bedroom farmhouse for accommodation. Income from the farm will be

self-sufficient farm with an established vegetable plot, mature
fruit trees (apricot, plum, and fig) and herb garden. Flood

WE NEED A PERSON with a very special skill set: Chef, Yoga
Instructor and Gardener.  The  successful  candidate  must have
professional chef skills. Person will be in charge of two

RANCH HELP NEEDED - Looking for a long term individual with own
RV to be part of our Southern Arizona donkey rescue facility. We
are a rural "off grid" sanctuary in the beautiful
Sonoran Desert. Will exchange full RV hook-up and high speed
internet for help with daily barn chores; about three hours work
per day; no compensation. Must appreciate rural living and be
comfortable around donkey's, horses and dogs; your pets are

WE NEED HELP with chores in and around the house in exchange for
free rent and utilities. We are looking for a couple or person
comfortable with good natured, lovable horses and comfortable
with living 12 miles from the city limits. In case we are gone
for a night or more the responsibilities will be feeding the
birds and of course the horses and maintaining the barn area and
cleaning the manure of the two horses. No special skills are
necessary. If interested in long term stay, for the 24 foot
trailer, 10½ hours per week in exchange for living space
and utilities for one person, and 15 per week for two people. For

week for two people. The surrounding land is very beautiful and
very unpopulated, with lots of wildlife. We are basically
surrounded by national forest land. Hiking and riding trails
abound, ruins dating back 800 to 1,000 years are present
everywhere ... you need only discover them. There are a zillion
stars, much privacy and quietude. There are no fast food chains
down the block and no pizza delivery! Be aware: if you like to

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Earlier this year my husband and I responded to one of the
Gazette caretaking positions that you had sent out through one of
your email updates but we were not selected for the position. The
landowners just contacted us again and have now offered us the
job! It turns out that the couple who originally accepted the
position had to leave for personal reasons. We accepted the
opportunity and are ready to start our new adventure! Thanks for

Dear Editor, I first encountered The Caretaker Gazette when I
interviewed its publisher, Gary Dunn, for an MSN Money article
called "How you can live rent-free”
http://tinyurl.com/nxozcl. Too bad I didn't re-read this article
before acquiring a couple of housesitters of my own. I spent
nearly four months away from home and had two different people
watching my place, with varying degrees of success -- mostly
because I neglected the cardinal rule of housesitting: "Get
everything in writing." No lasting harm done, and I was
actually able to turn it into an essay for my personal website,
"The true and simple rules for house-sitting”
http://tinyurl.com/385e9qo. One of the comments left by a reader
contained a piece of advice I'd like to offer to Caretaker
Gazette subscribers: The reader, a full-time housesitter, says
she takes detailed photographs in case she moves things around.
When it's time for her to leave, she can be sure of having
everything back in its place. Wish my housesitters had known
that. I'm still trying to figure out why a nightlight was removed
from one room and plugged in under the dining table. Best

Donna, it was a pleasure being interviewed by you for your
piece on www.msn.com. We always emphasize to both property owners
and housesitters to put as much as you can in writing, even if
you need a housesitter for just a weekend. And thanks for sharing
the tip about photographing the inside of a home at the very
start of housesitting. It’s great advice!

Gary just wanted to drop you a quick thanks. For the past several
years, I was away from my home base working in Boston. I travel
with work and for pleasure and often need a temporary Mom for my
Cocker Spaniel. Even with strong support from friends and family,
I still had gaps in house/dog-sitting coverage, so I ran my first
ad with you in 2007. The sitters that I found through the Gazette
were amazing.  People came from all over the US and Canada for a
week at a time. They were a pleasure to meet and I was relieved
to know that they would be at home while I was away. My friends
and family thought I was nuts to let strangers come to visit, but
I could not have been happier with the experience.  I still keep
in touch with some of the sitters. I have returned to my home
base and no longer need sitters, but I still keep my eye on the
Gazette and maybe one day I will be a sitter for someone. Thanks

YEAR-ROUND MANAGER/CARETAKER WANTED for our guesthouses in
Tofino, BC, starting January 1, 2011. We need help in our guest
operations for six beautiful self-contained vacation rentals

COSTA RICA

OUR 69 ACRE FINCA/FARM borders the Rincon rainforest reserve
which is part of a wider conservation area in the northern region
of Costa Rica. This conservation area includes Guanacaste
National Park, Rincon de La Vieja National Park and Santa Rosa
National Park. We strive to support local conservation efforts
through sustainable living and farming practices and sustainable
forest management and aim to create a replicable model of these
practices for local people and international visitors. Some of
the ways we do this is by applying permaculture design, organic
farming, natural building and composting. We are seeking
volunteers who will be involved in all aspects of life on the
farm and can assist with planting, tending the gardens, feeding
the animals, cooking, gathering firewood, natural building

for drinking, bathing, washing, and watering during the dry

ICELAND

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for Advent and Christmas in Reykjavík
from December 10 – 24, 2010. Volunteers join the festive
Christmas atmosphere and support the Reykjavík branch of
the Icelandic Red Cross handing out hot chocolate in the city
centre as a way of fundraising for its projects. We will help in
the preparation by putting up the chocolate stations, decorating
the tables, making the chocolate and taking it to the different
stations around the city. At the end of the day, we will assist
in taking down the stations and leaving the areas clean. In this
time of the year many families struggle to make ends meet and
need to reach out for support of any kind. The Red Cross
organizes food donations to them and we will assist them during
this busy time. The tasks will be to put food packages together,
organize and classify the food in stock and other related tasks.
Volunteers with artistic skills, such as singing, juggling,
playing music are encouraged to apply for this project as they
will have the chance to perform during the chocolate handout and

        Sheri Lynn Wilson was born and raised in a small town in
Iowa. Sheri recalls, “The extent of my travel experiences
as a child and young teen were family trips to our vacation home
on a little lake in Nisswa, Minnesota.” Sheri's first trip
out of the U.S. came much later in life when, in her early
20’s, she spent a week in Cozumel, Mexico. According to
Sheri, “I was hooked! I fell in love with Mexico and knew
that someday not only would I go back for another vacation, but I
had dreams that I would eventually wind up living there, and so I
did.”
        After graduating from high school, Sheri attended
Cosmetology Arts and Sciences School in Norman, Oklahoma and
managed a successful full service salon there. “After a
decade of being in business and on almost every board in town, I
was tired. I wanted a change of pace so I sold my salon, put my
house on the market and spent six months with a friend on his
36-foot luxury boat in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.” Sheri
learned how to read Charlie's charts and co-captain a power boat.
After this experience Sheri found, “I quickly realized that
I could live a lifestyle that allowed me to travel. I felt I had
a lot to offer the caretaker profession, so after reading The
Caretaker Gazette for the first time, I started applying for
caretaking jobs.”
        After responding to an ad in the Gazette, she accepted a
caretaking position on Roatan, an island off Honduras. Sheri's
responsibilities included caring for a large estate, providing
security and taking care of staff.  Her boating skills came in
handy on Roatan as commuting to the next town, or cay, was by
skiff, dodging the coral reefs.
        Since Sheri's stint on Roatan, she secured several other
caretaking jobs thanks to the Gazette. She has been a caretaker
for a remote cabin in the Arkansas Ozarks, near the White River.
Sheri next secured a position with a friend on Bakers Island, a
private island off the New England coast. Sheri's primary
responsibility was to look after 60 privately owned cottages,
keep trespassers away, and communicate with the Salem
harbormaster and the Coast Guard when the Lighthouse needed
renovation. Sheri was entirely off the grid there, no cars, no
restaurants, or movie theatres but was just a mere boat ride away
from all that. Once again her boating skills were honed as the
only means of transportation was via a dinghy. She recalls that
the island was magical and lush and mystical, and the cottage
owners were very kind and friendly.
        Sheri also was the sole caretaker for a Cerillos, New
Mexico ranch that was featured on The Today Show segment about
The Caretaker Gazette. Sheri took care of feeding horses, cows, a
bull and several dogs and a cat. “I loved being on this
ranch. I love the owners very much as they were extremely good to
me and taught me so much about life and not sweating the small
stuff.” Sheri remains in contact with the owners of the
ranch as they were more than her employers, they became trusted
friends. Sheri's most recent caretaking experiences were in Baja
Mexico, caring for large estate homes located on Cabo San Lucas
and the 'Riviera Corridor' between Cabo and San Jose del Cabo.
“I mostly did short term house/petsits for clients on a
