LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thank you for the email updates. We have been successful in
landing a caretaker job through your publication in Durango, CO.
We couldn't be happier! My husband Jeff and I are running a
22-unit condo complex two miles from the Durango Mountain Resort.
Thank you for providing a great connection between caretakers and
potential employment opportunities! P. and J. R., Green Lake, WI

Congratulations on landing a caretaker job, Pamela and Jeff! You
will be in a beautiful area of the country. I am glad that you
were able to use the Gazette to find a position. I wish you all
the best and look forward to hearing about your caretaking
experiences.

Thank you for mailing my first issue to me, Gary. I have filled
the position here due to your Caretaker Gazette's
Situations-Wanted section and no longer need to advertise in your
publication. I look forward to your magazine as I find it very
interesting and wish that I had utilized it much sooner than I
did! B. M., Danville, WA

Blanche, that's great news to read that you were able to hire
someone out of our Situations-Wanted ads from your first issue of
the Gazette. We have many qualified subscribers who advertise
their availability in our Situations-Wanted section. Like you,
many property owners utilize this section to find caretakers and
housesitters for their properties.

I am new to The Caretaker Gazette and I originally signed up with
a print subscription. I am wondering if there are any benefits to
having an online one instead. I receive all your new listings
through my email address. If I decide I'd rather have the online
is it possible to change now or should I wait when I renew my
subscription? Thanks Gary! K. M., Burlington, VT

Thanks for your message and your new subscription, Kerry. The
majority of our subscribers now prefer the online subscription
because they can access the Gazette any time, any place, by
logging in using their username (email address) and their
password. If you enjoy receiving the print issues in the mail,
you can keep your current subscription as is. Otherwise, you can
simply email or call us to change to an online subscription.

Hi Gary, is there any way for me to access past issues from a
year or two ago? I'd like to read some of the older issues. By
the way, you have a great little publication. You probably
remember me from about 15 years ago when I took a position out of
your paper. Thanks, G.M., Redding, CA

Hi Glen, at the request of property owners who have filled their
positions and no longer wish to be contacted, we remove older
issues and they cannot be accessed by subscribers. Thanks for
your compliments about the Gazette. I appreciate that you have
been with us for so many years.

To Gary and the Caretaker crew, congratulations on over 30 years
of publishing the Gazette! I have found such great caretakers
though your publication and will continue to recommend you to
other property owners around here! S.Y., Mendocino, CA

Many thanks, Sue, from all of us here at the Gazette! As we start
the Gazette's 32nd year of publication, I appreciate your
business and recommendations. Take care, Gary

fall and winter months. The farm manager/horse trainer has had a
sports injury - "broken shoulder". The farm chores would be
feeding, watering horses daily, checking pasture horses, some
household duties, like helping prepare meals, etc. Help prepare
the farm for winter. Some snow shoveling of the walk way. Help
with the grocery shopping once a week. Just need someone else on
the farm with my husband and me and the horses, until I mend this
winter. I will be back working horses in the spring. We are
looking for persons interested in learning and working with
horses all year round and staying for two to three months or
longer. We have 20 horses. We live three hours from Jasper and 45
minutes from the West Edmonton Mall for weekend getaways. We are
a Horse Boarding Stable on 160 acres of rolling hills, with
wildlife on the property. You will learn as you go each day, if
you have never worked with horses. There are miles of marked
trail to enjoy on horseback or walking trails. At times we all go
for a trail ride on a trustworthy school horse or start the
beginner rider with lessons in the riding ring. The warmer months
we spend lots of time outside playing with horses. Winter time we
still care for the horses, cross country ski, snow shoe and if
not to cold ride in the snow! We also take a day once a month to
cut wood for the family/TV room. You will need very warm
clothing/boots for the winters in Alberta! Your accommodations
are in a bunkhouse that sleeps four or trailer/camper. All
meals/showers are shared in the house. Must be non-smokers,
non-drinkers only, and non vegetarian. Please call

ICELAND

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX VOLUNTEERS needed at the local municipality
in Patreksfjörour, in the West Fjords. Volunteers will be
beautifying the town of Patreksfjörour and surroundings by
maintaining walking paths, planting trees and taking care of
green areas. The West Fjords are among the most breathtakingly
beautiful places in Iceland, with its high mountains and dramatic
fjords cutting deep into the landscape. The Lonely Planet travel
guide actually put the area on its top 10 list of regions in the
world to visit in 2011. Patreksfjörour is a typical fishing
village with a population of about 800. It is the biggest town in
the southern part of the West Fjords. Patreksfjörour got its
name from its first settler, whose spiritual guide was St.
Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Somewhat fittingly it was
in this fjord that the first potatoes were cultivated in Iceland
in the 18th century. The town is located on the shores in the
south of the West Fjords and is surrounded by mountains that
offer endless opportunities to enjoy nature and wilderness during
all seasons. Although the locals here are great, it is the nature
that attracts visitors. For understandable reasons as well: it is
untouched and almost uninhabited. The cliffs and valleys are
packed with birds, the uninhabited fjords offer a moment of
silence and tranquillity, and the Arctic fox proudly roams the
mountains and inlets. The waterfalls are high and the streams
pure. The distances are long and the fjords are deep. And then
there are places where there are no roads at all. Volunteers
should have a motivation for working outdoors and be prepared to
experience different kinds of weather. There will be countless
opportunities to discover the area by foot or to hike the
surroundings; the location is surrounded by stunning nature. Our
hosting partner will organise free time activities in the area;
for instance visiting the local swimming pool, horseback riding
and/or kayaking. We will probably do some painting jobs as well
and various other tasks that need to be done around town. The
working plan will be flexible and it will depend on the needs of
our local host and the advance of the diverse projects in the
area as well as weather conditions. The weather conditions in
Iceland are unpredictable, be prepared to experience all kinds of
weather and be sure of bringing warm clothing since most of the
work will take place outdoors. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
volunteers will be hosted in a local house in a sleeping bag
accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Food supplies
will be provided and a kitchen will be available. Volunteers will
share the duties of cooking and cleaning. Do not forget some
traditional/typical food from your home country for an
international evening. To learn more, please visit our website at

CARETAKER PROFILE
"Revelations" of an Oregon Coast Caretaker
Date of Birth: 5/14/53
Interests: Lighthouses, marine fauna and flora, bird-watching,
hiking, writing, emancipatory media
Quote: "I do not want to spin silly tales for money; I want to
write about revelations." - Jack Kerouac

Catherine J. Rourke

I was turning 60 and turning over more than just a new decade; it
was time to turn over a new leaf in my way of life. Too young for
Social Security and too old to get hired for most jobs, I turned
to The Caretaker Gazette to liberate me from the proverbial rat
race and rent treadmill.
In the documentary film "Random Lunacy," globe-trotting free
spirit Poppa Neutrino, says, "Rent is the thing that beats us."
He claims it kills our dreams, passions and creativity.
Mortgages, maintenance and utilities keep us shackled to the yoke
like wage slaves for most of our lives, he explains, robbing us
of our freedom. We become slaves to the house and utility
companies.
I couldn't agree more. And The Caretaker Gazette offered a key to
open the door to that freedom.
After 34 years of award-winning journalism, I found myself laid
off like thousands of other reporters as newspapers folded across
the country. For years I had spun silly tales for money -
regurgitating police blotters and press releases. I wanted to
transcend body-bag journalism with its high-speed chases to write
about revelations instead - topics that make a difference and
help people.
Working as a contractual book editor for companies like
Amazon.com kept me afloat, but I yearned to write my own book on
women's health, having conducted extensive research for over 10
years on the epidemic of reproductive disorders. But I needed a
time-out from the constant frenetic deadlines to finish the
exposé I had started some years ago.
I subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette and patiently kept an eye
on the listings for some time. I was looking for a lighthouse
keeper position because the ocean inspires my creative process. I
had also started a book of "revelations" about how to face
uncertainty with joy instead of fear. Writing "Keeper of the
Light" near a shining beacon of hope seemed like a great idea.
But I lacked a pilot's license and the handyman skills the few
scant lighthouse ads required. So I continued to subscribe,
knowing that one day the perfect situation would appear. And then
one day it finally did. When I saw the ad for a caretaker on the
Oregon coast, I knew I was home.
The owners needed someone to keep an eye on their lakeside
property, situated a mile from the ocean, while they were gone
for several months. Working at home on a laptop as a book editor
and writer meant I could be a constant companion for their dog
Lucy, a yellow Labrador retriever, since she was unable to
accompany them on their distant travels. I responded to the ad,
submitting references and background checks. Then I drove to the
property for an interview since I was already residing in Oregon
and Lucy chose me out of numerous applicants.
It was a dream come true: my own beautiful spacious furnished
guesthouse with several huge windows overlooking a lake just a
mile from some of Oregon's most spectacular coastline. Free rent,
utilities and Internet in exchange for living in paradise, caring
for a lovely property and a delightful dog. I arrived in the
spring to serve as Lucy's companion and we became best friends.
Every day we go beachcombing or swimming in the lake. I check the
watering system and the mail and keep an eye on the property. A
caretaker makes all the difference in deterring burglars as well
as bears and other critters while folks are traveling! From my
windows I see herons and wild geese, an occasional eagle and hear
the most amazing and beautiful birdsong. At night I listen to a
chorus of frogs singing their hearts out under a blanket of
stars. It's a tranquil setting and a true writer's paradise. I
watch whales, waves, sea lions and seagulls at the nearby
beaches, all an inspiration for my creative writing.
And it is just minutes to "the world's most photographed
lighthouse" - spectacular Heceta Head Lightstation, perched on a
spectacular cliff high above the crashing waves. Sitting there
with my notepad, I am writing revelations that can make a
difference and maybe even save a life one day. Sure, I'm still
editing books to earn a living. But gone is the overwhelming
pressure since I can pick and choose the books and authors. Right
now I'm working with an author in Australia, another in London
and one in the Deep South, helping them craft their revelations
and messages for the world with enough time to focus on mine as
well. As a publishing expert no longer trampled by multiple
deadlines, I have the time to create a blog and webinars. The
income that housing and utilities used to evaporate now goes into
savings - investing in my future instead of the landlord's.
I like to paraphrase Virginia Woolf by saying that "a woman needs
a room of her own" - from The Caretaker Gazette! - "if she is
going to write..." My tour of duty here ends in September so I am
seeking my next position through the Gazette, somewhere on the
Oregon coast, or any coast, so I can continue to write about
revelations. Maybe that dream lighthouse position will turn up...
one never knows what ads will appear each week.
For now, I'm living my dream, thanks to the Gazette. I think
Poppa Neutrino would approve!

NEW MEXICO

A FULL-TIME RANCH COUPLE is needed to care for and maintain a
vacation property and provide some personal service to family
members when they are in residence. This is a second home to four
siblings and their families who utilize the property throughout
the year. The woman would need to keep the home clean all year,
purchase fresh groceries before arrival, wash laundry, occasional
ironing and provide family style meals and BBQ's when requested.
Plant and care for yard, flower gardens and pots. The man would
be responsible for the grounds keeping the three acres of
landscaped property around homes and various structures on the
property. Trim trees, watering plants, mow lawns, maintain
sprinkler system, care for and clean several vehicles, and ATV's.
Basic trade skills and mechanical abilities needed for
preventative maintenance, basic repairs, and troubleshooting.
Assist with washing the windows and heavy projects and other
deferred maintenance projects on the inside of the 4,800 sq ft
home. Provide airport shuttles and keep accurate accounts and
records. They are looking for a cheerful, responsible couple who
are friendly but respect privacy and boundaries. Please note the
altitude at the ranch is 5,000'. A two bedroom unfurnished house
with a patio is provided. Full health and dental insurance and
salary commensurate with the job and experience. Please do not
contact us or apply if you do not have experience. Applicants
must have experience. Please email your resumes and cover letter
to "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads
is available only to Gazette subscribers."

I AM AN OLDER WOMAN, living on five mostly undeveloped acres just
outside Roswell, NM (yes, that Roswell) who needs help mostly
outside, including landscaping (xeriscape), fencing and turning
at least half of the property into a site suitable for goats,
llamas and chickens, as well as a garden (and, if you're into
cooking or housekeeping, I wouldn't turn that down either). I
also have several older motorcycles (my means of transportation)
that could use some TLC if anyone has mechanical knowledge. My
priorities currently are repairing barbed-wire fences, building a
chicken coop, putting in a vegetable garden, some outdoor
plumbing, and others as needed. You'd get a private room (shared
bath) in my home, and could work as many or as few hours a day as
you'd like. I'm not a cook, and I work very odd hours, so I'll
buy your food but for the most part, it'll be up to you to cook.
The help will be nice, but just meeting interesting folks (which
is what I've done lately) is the best part. I'm also a font of
knowledge about what there is to do in New Mexico (aside from
Roswell aliens) and would give you lots of time to explore. My
only restrictions are no pets (I have two very old cats),
firearms, drugs and smokers must smoke outdoors only. For more
information, please call "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers."

THIS IS AN HISTORIC HIPPIE COMMUNE from the 60's, which has
become a working permaculture farm for vegetables, berries, fruit
and chickens. The Rio Hondo drains Taos Ski Valley (18 miles
away) into the Rio Grande (one mile away). Our fields of grasses,
sage, pinion pine and juniper look up to the Sangre de Christo
Mountains and down on the Rio Hondo gorge. We live and teach
self-sufficiency, have a large adobe solar home and shop,
outbuildings, greenhouse, and root cellar. We love art, music,
beauty, simplicity, natural healing, and helping one another
attain skills to live successfully in challenging times. We're
happy to share teaching and learning farming and survival skills
with others who are open, flexible, and independent. We accept a
limited number of farm helpers but are always open to meet new
people and to talk. Experience is great yet a solid work ethic
and genuine interest in sustainable agriculture are more
important. A good helper should be able to listen to directions,
but also be innovative and take initiative. Farming in the
northern New Mexico climate is challenging and full of surprises,
so it's difficult to set regular, daily task schedules most times
of the year. Thus, we are looking for people who are flexible and
adaptable, who can focus on one task and then quickly change
gears to something else. This includes the ability to work
different schedules at different times. We expect a solid
twenty-five hours per week, and offer flexible down-time to
pursue your own interests here or in the culturally rich nearby
village of Taos and New Mexico itself. This experience is more
than farming. New Buffalo is also about living and working
together in a group setting. Though there are no children at the
moment, we are already a diverse group of people in terms of age,
and the ability to work and live in a multi-generational setting
is a must. We are looking for people with the emotional maturity
and communication skills to be able to discuss issues that might
arise with honesty and compassion. At the moment we are hoping to
fill a few, very specific, longer-term positions. The first,
ideally at least a four-month minimum, is for part-time farming
and part-time housekeeping that would include food and a private
room in the main building. The housekeeping tasks are fairly
light, but helping to manage the main building is a must, and
could involve helping occasional guests, workshops, or retreats.
The second position or rather, positions would be another
four-month minimum stay, preferably from June through September.
Ideally, a couple would fill this position and live in a
comfortable two-room adobe attached to our new 900' greenhouse.
There is also a very rustic, plumbed space which could be
developed into a kitchen. This position would be mostly farming
and includes daily management of the greenhouse attached to the
facility. Work could be shared between two people, but a genuine
interest in small-scale, regenerative agriculture is a must. If
any of these situations seem interesting, please write to us and
we would be happy to discuss it further and answer any questions.

NICARAGUA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. My name is Celine, a 29-year-old French lady
who is living near the city of Leon, Nicaragua. I would like to
tell you a little story, so pay attention please: I have
purchased land in a little authentic fishing and surfing village
in Nicaragua called Jiquilillo, in order to start a non-profit
project for children and teenagers. This village is beautiful. I
bought some land and I would like to build a playground area and
an art school. Currently everything is in process, the more help
I get, the faster we'll be, and obviously the sooner my social
non-profit project will be done. It is not an organization. I am
doing everything on my own. I have a lot of ideas in mind but I
need people to make them real. It would be great to get some
construction workers with experience, carpenters, painters, etc.
and naturally some engineers. Child lovers with no experience are
also welcome. My idea is that every single child develops his/her
creativity, imagination, etc. to give them a chance to learn art,
painting, languages, jewelry making, dancing, playing
instruments, circus stuff, cooking and many other things, that
are totally possible to learn in another country but not here. I
would like to give them a place where they could play freely,
learn skating, climbing on a bouldering wall, play ping pong and
table football, as extra activities after school, as they have
plenty of time and expect to make the most of it. I first need
volunteers who are able to help me to build a concrete skate
bowl, a wooden climbing bouldering wall, a ping pong table and
many other games. Also, renovate an eleven meter long school bus
which actually will be the volunteering place initially. The bus
will consist of a five bed sleeping area, and another area for a
kitchen shared with a table and some seats. Work will consist in
painting the interior part of the bus and install all the
facilities. Currently, there is just a toilet and a shower and an
open rancho where a campsite can be placed, with hammocks, a gas
cooker, seats, etc. Naturally you must be a nature lover. It is
all I can provide now because everything needs to be built, but
once the construction is finished, it would be a lovely, colorful
and artistic place where everyone will be welcome. Once the bus
is done, volunteers will be given shelter in exchange to 3/4
every day hours giving language, art, and yoga classes. The place
offers lots of opportunities for the volunteers during their free
time such as surfing, climbing volcanoes, fishing, etc. so, if
you are an adventurous traveler who feels like helping me to give
a better future for the children, I can offer you a place to stay
if you give me a hand with the project and make a better world.

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished (we aim
for late 2013), we want to sail the world, visiting other
eco-villages, collecting knowledge and traveling in the most
eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps us out will have the
chance to join our crew. We also work on the farm, building up
the infrastructure to create a stable base for our community. We
live with our dog, the farm cat and some (very) free-range
chickens. We keep bees and make jam; this year we harvested our
first crop of potatoes and planted next seasons raspberries.
Eventually we hope to grow all our food. We want to create a
place that will continue to flourish, where crops, thoughts,
adventures, and of course boats, can grow! We ask for a minimum
commitment of thirty days, with a week-long trial period. We
welcome anyone as long as you are happy to work hard and help out
where needed. There are enough beds for eight volunteers and the
schedule is Monday to Friday, with approximately eight to nine
hours of work a day. Please bring your pets if you can! Boat work
is predominantly during the winter and jobs include welding the
deck, installing the engine, sewing the sails, constructing the
mast and fitting the interior. If you have any particular skills
in these areas, please let us know. On the farm you may be asked
to do anything from plowing and harvesting to jam making, roof
building, beekeeping, digging, painting, or grinding the barley
for our morning porridge. It is guaranteed that you will be asked
to cook; our diet is vegetarian and we try to eat only seasonal
food, grown as locally as possible. On the weekends there are
forests and mountains to explore, and we have skis, tents and
bikes available for those who want to go adventuring. Come help
us out and join our tribe of sea-gypsies! Please send an email to
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is

be interested in our community and please place this in Capital
Letters in the Subject Line: "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact

have a sense of pride in making the quality of your work as good
as it can be! You would love to be learning, working and living
in a beautiful country spot. Being isolated from the city sounds
like heaven and while you may be quiet, you basically like people
and enjoy the social opportunities of living in community, too.
Maybe you have a skill to teach us, or you're hungry to learn one
of our skills! We love exchanging information and skills. Our
place sits on a hill overlooking the Skagit River and Valley,
five miles east of Sedro-Woolley towards the North Cascades. The
house proper is gigantic, measuring in at about 8,600 square
feet, and has many varieties of spaces available for individual
and community needs. Our sauna is up and running and we have a
solar heated outdoor bathing area (as well as indoor bathrooms).
We have a flock of chickens, goats, pigs, and gardens. There's a
lot of opportunity to learn about and practice permaculture. We
have plenty of outdoor and indoor projects we can use help with
depending on interests and experience. Much of the help we need
involves physical labor, such as gardening, planting, firewood
cutting etc, but we try to keep it at a pace that respects our
bodies. We also try to keep the work interesting and relevant to
peoples' interests to build on life skills. For working 30 hours
a week we will provide you with a bed and good, healthy food
that's 80% raised here or organic. We can organize your hours in
a variety of ways as suits your schedule and needs. In addition,
everyone here pitches in with meal preparation and cleanup, and
helping to keep common areas clean. There are lots of sleeping
spaces in various configurations. Depending on the number of
people there may be a private room, shared room, or dorm style
sleeping. It's a fun, friendly household -- come join us for a
while. To learn more, please visit our website at
