LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hello, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy receiving the
email updates from The Caretaker Gazette! Though my husband and I
still have a couple of years to go before retiring it is fun to
see the positions for caretakers and housesitters that come up
via your publication. I read them out loud to my husband, and
every now and then I see that he is weighing the option of
retiring early when the description is just right. Thank you, J.
C. Alturas, CA

Hi Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to share your
experience with the Gazette. We appreciate having you as a
subscriber. Hopefully you and your husband will be able to take
one of the caretaking or housesitting positions from the Gazette
when he retires.

Hi Gary and family, I want to thank you and The Caretaker Gazette
for sending me a great pair of caretakers for my property. Due to
a death in our extended family we were left with a vacant home
and land and no one to step in and care for it until it could be
sold. Our help-wanted ad with you resulted in several great
responses so we had top-notch people to choose from. The
caretakers we found through you cared for the property as if it
were their own. We couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you from
all of us. P.K., Philadelphia, PA

Thank you for taking the time to write to us, Paul. We were sorry
to read about the death in your family but happy that you could
find some great caretakers to look after your family home and
property. Property owners have told us that they have found the
most experienced and reliable caretakers via The Caretaker
Gazette.

I see so my advertisers requiring me to email them and I
don’t have a computer. Why do so many advertisers ask me to
apply for their position via email? J. T. Albany, NY

Jim, we have no control over how our advertisers prefer to have
applicants contact them. Many of our subscribers don’t own
a computer. There are several Internet Service Providers that
offer free email accounts, such as Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo. You
can access one of these providers to register for a free email
account. Additionally, most unemployment offices, public
libraries and college placement offices have computers and
Internet access for their patrons to use at no charge.

Hi Gary, please sign me up for another three years of The
Caretaker Gazette. Over the years I’ve made great use of
your publication as far as finding housesitters for my own home
and finding housesitting positions for myself around the world
for when I travel. So, I’ve happily been on both sides and
look forward to more years of traveling with the help of you and
your publication. Thank you from me. M.A.W., Boulder, CO

Hi Mary Ann, thanks for writing! Many of our subscribers who are
in a situation similar to yours, where they are able to travel,
utilize the Gazette to find housesitters for their own homes and
find housesitting positions for themselves while they travel.

COLORADO

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are a Buddhist nonprofit endeavor located
at the base of a magnificent mountain range in South-Central
Colorado. The valley floor is at 8,000 feet surrounded by
14,000-foot peaks. We are close to the Sangre de Cristo
Wilderness and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This is an
agricultural area in an Alpine-desert environment. We have
chickens, horses and dogs and are planning to get goats or sheep
for milk, yogurt and cheese. This year (2012) we will finish the
greenhouse and grow greens and herbs in it. We also plan to plant
gardens on our land of potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, carrots,
quinoa and millet using permaculture designs. We are especially
using Geoff and Nadia Lawton's "Greening The Desert"
concepts. For the past three years we have been creating our
compost to use this year. We are seeking one or two volunteers
who can stay at least a month at a time (hopefully longer). We
prefer people who can stay a minimum of eight weeks. People with
building abilities to finish the greenhouse would be very
welcome. Helpers would be asked to carry out morning chores (feed
and water the horses, goats or sheep, and chickens), along with
other farm chores when needed. They would also help with planting
seeds, plants and trees, as well as composting and watering them.
We plan to make home-made egg noodles from the eggs and will be
making cheese and yogurt this summer. We do not slaughter any
animals for food (or for any other reason). Our ultimate goal is
to be as self-sufficient as possible. All volunteer work will not
amount to more than three hours per day, leaving volunteers time
to explore this wonderful community. In return, helpers will
receive accommodations but must provide and prepare their own
food. Volunteers will stay in a lovely retreat cabin or in a
trailer - both with a gorgeous view of the mountains. All
volunteers must have their own transportation (car, truck,
motorcycle or bicycle). Sorry, but we cannot accept children or
pets. No alcohol or drugs may be used on our property. We have
many other on-going and compassionate projects involving Buddhist
teachings, healing, music and film, as well as collaboration with
Native American leaders, which volunteers may find interesting.
Buddhists do not do "missionary work;" we do not try to
convert others. If volunteers wish to learn more about our
teachings and meditation while here, they can, but it is not
necessary. There are many spiritual centers of various religious
traditions here, along with world-class hiking, climbing
(Penitente Canyon is across the Valley); white water rafting and
hot springs. We want to express our gratefulness in advance to
all those kind enough to help us with our good endeavors. Those

COSTA RICA

WE ARE LOOKING FOR AN ENERGETIC AND OUTGOING person with previous
experience of living in a community to take over the role of Head
Gardener and Volunteer Coordinator, who can commit to at least
six months. This is an organic chocolate farm run by a local Tico
family in one of the most amazing places in Costa Rica. Nestled

and rugged tropical environment that is ideal for cocoa
cultivation. We have been producing organic cocoa for over 25

CARETAKERS NEEDED for our small farm near Nuevo Arenal, Costa

we are in the U.S. for three to four months this summer. The

bordered by jungle and river with numerous tilapia ponds as well
as lush vegetation, flowering plants, orchids, a vegetable
garden, and fruit trees. Photos can be emailed to interested

town with a full array of stores, banks, hospital, etc. Reliable
and frequent buses pass through Rio Piedras. The caretakers will
need to feed our dog and the fish two times daily, water indoor
plants, maintain and clean the house, and agree to stay on the
property every night. Lawns and property are maintained by our
worker. Telephone, satellite TV, internet, and laundry facilities

ECUADOR

HOUSESITTER WANTED in Ecuador from October 2012 through January
2013 while we travel back to England for a three month holiday.
We are an English couple who live permanently in Ecuador, and
have a beautiful wooden house on six acres of Cloud Forest, two
miles outside of a town called Mindo with approximately 2,400
residents. On our property we have three dogs, two cats, a parrot
we rescued and a lot of chickens and ducks. We have different
areas of the land that we maintain as garden or for growing sugar
cane, bananas, vegetables etc and the rest of the land we leave
pretty much untouched with a trail running around the land and
through it. We have our own water supply and electricity and
although our house is rustic we have many of the comforts of
anywhere else! The housesitter needs to be someone who has a love
for the outdoors, animals and gardening. All our animals have
been brought up by us and are well behaved but they like to be
with us all the time. Everything talks, barks, crows and wants
affection so you need to really like animals and have some
experience. We are also surrounded by beautiful reserves and
activities, zip lining, waterfalls, butterfly farms, abseiling,
horse riding and there are restaurants and bars in the town of
Mindo. We will also provide you with our Quad to get around on.
We feel as though this is a great opportunity for someone maybe
considering a life abroad somewhere tropical with a unique
environment and culture. We are looking for someone who is going
to truly embrace being somewhere remote (although only 15 minutes
on the Quad to the town which has many National and International
tourists all year round!) and going to enjoy living there as much
as we do. Mindo is famous for its birds, orchids and its
biodiversity! From our balcony we daily see toucans, quetzals,
parrots and mammals such as Armadillos, Kinkajoos, and Apossoms.
This is not a paid house sit, nor we do not expect to get paid
but general maintenance of the house and land is definitely part
of the deal. Cost of living is very cheap and eating out or
cooking is very cheap, you will need to pay the electricity bill
and buy petrol for the Quad but the electricity bill is not more
than $10 a month and petrol $1.50 a gallon! Our house, land and
animals have been a true labor of love for two years so we are
really keen to make sure we find the perfect people to housesit
for us. If you think you might be interested I am sure you will
have lots of questions as we will have for you. But if this
sounds like something you could be interested please email

EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEERS needed for the
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We look for enthusiastic fellows who
would like to help us and learn about building a round shaped
sustainable cob and bamboo house, as well as organic farming,
cheese and bread making. We will start an organic vegetable
garden while working on the house. We have a flat for helpers to
stay, with a bathroom and kitchen and Wi-Fi. We offer
accommodation and lunch, but the helper should provide their own
breakfast and dinner. We expect people to work at least six hours
per day; you will be working with local workers, which is a good
way to learn Spanish, and can get you in contact with the
neighbors. We can also organize Spanish classes and excursions,
especially to the jungle, and shamanic ceremonies. We are an
Italian couple, Cecilia and Francesco, with a two-year-old son,
who first came to Ecuador in 2006. We have lived in this
beautiful country for over five years now. Cecilia is a
sociologist with a Master’s degree in Gender Studies while
Francesco has a PhD in Physics. We worked on international
cooperation and environmental research and now we started this
beautiful project of building a house for us made of cob and
bamboo. We fell in love with nature, the jungle, spirits and the
culture of Ecuador and its people, its sunsets, its climate, its
power, and we felt that here we could make our dream of living in
a self-sustainable way with real caring for the earth and our
lives. A few months ago we bought a plot of land on the slopes of
the volcano Ilal in the valley of Tumbaco, a half hour from the
city of Quito. It is a beautiful place, still quite rural but
close to everything you need. The land has approximately 3,000mq
and has a nice view of Ilal and the volcano of Quito, Pichincha.
Here we will build our house, capturing rainwater, recycling
water from sinks, using composting toilets, and in the future we
hope to take energy from the sun. Please email

CARETAKER PROFILE
“Traveler, Adventurer, Alternative Health Scientist, now
Caretaker”
Date of Birth: 12/15/63
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Hiking, kayaking, ice skating, horseback riding, etc.,
travel, multicultural places, people and music, and studying
alternative health science. My dream is to help homeless
children; volunteering, adopting, and/or starting an orphanage.
Quote: “It is easy in the world to live after the
world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our
own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps
with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, on Independence”

Jackie Barrera

When I moved to New England, in the rural Boston area, I found a
place to rent from a family who was going to be out of the
country for two years. And, I fell in love with their home. It
was warm, open, large, and comfortable with a beautiful yard that
had plentiful flowers to pick from for bouquets. I found myself
caring for the home and yard, and giving it the time and
attention it needed. It was then I got the idea that maybe I
could take care of someone’s home for them; help a
homeowner who needed an extra hand, who is too busy and
doesn’t have the time, or needs to be out of the area for a
while, and have it benefit me. I could love someone’s home
for them.
After that idea, I started looking and came across The Caretaker
Gazette. When I read about all the great jobs available across
the world I instinctively knew it was the right move for me. I
found a Caretaker Gazette ad for a caretaking position in the
area, responded, met the owners for an interview, and very
shortly after was moving into a new home as a caretaker. The
situation was, and still is, taking care of a primary home for a
busy couple; a 10,000 square foot perfectly restored, historic
New England mansion. The arrangement is to be at the home when
the owners can’t be - to turn on the lights at dusk, etc.,
to clean the home once a week, and to take care of the two
terriers, in exchange for the fourth floor apartment.
I have now been at this historic home for two years, near Boston,
Massachusetts, tending and caring for the historic mansion, and
the dogs. I also work a full-time job in the same town, one mile
from the house. It has been a perfect arrangement at the perfect
time.
My daily routine looks like this:
Between 6 and 7am I get up and dress appropriately for the
weather conditions, while the dogs go crazy, because they know
they’re getting breakfast and get to go for a walk. After
our 15 minute walk, I pick up the newspaper, and bring them back
inside where they settle into the kitchen for the morning. Then I
straighten up the kitchen, load or unload the dishwasher, take
out the trash, etc.
After that, I get ready for work, go to work, and come back at
lunchtime to feed and walk the dogs. Before I return to work, I
help them settle onto their beds with their toys in the kitchen
again. Between 5 and 6pm I come home from work, turn on the
outside lights and the few inside lights, pick up the mail and
walk the dogs. They love to be walked, and they are always so
happy to go outside. Sometimes I walk them longer during this
time, especially if it is nice weather, or if there are new
Christmas lights to discover. At first this was an odd routine to
get used to, but now I enjoy it, especially if one is not apt to
going out in certain kinds of weather. I get to experience
more… thanks to dogs. Then I have free time until 10pm,
when I’ll walk the dogs again, and then bring them upstairs
to my room, where they’ll play, then settle down in their
beds for the night. I also take them to the vet when needed, for
check-ups, and to renew any medication.
On one of my days off I clean the house. This takes around five
hours. Most of the home is like a historic time piece, is truly a
work of art, and is not often used, so it gets vacuumed, dusted,
polished and shined. The common areas are furnished in a
different design, modern contemporary, and will also look
immaculate after the weekly cleaning.
The historic home is currently for sale, although it is not
expected to sell immediately. As a subscriber to The Caretaker
Gazette I am planning ahead, and looking at other possible
caretaking opportunities. I am ready to travel and explore again.
I recently visited Montreal which I enjoyed very much. It is a
‘perfect place,’ full of culture and outdoor
activities. I also have an interest in western Montana, to
participate in all the outdoor activities, and since it is
seasonal possibly travel a month or two a year. I would like to
visit parts of Europe, and have an interest in Turkey too.
I am so grateful to be able to use The Caretaker Gazette to
enhance my lifestyle. My true love is children and my ultimate
dream is to help homeless children. I want to create a home for
those in need, but I’m also interested in volunteering in a
place that is already established to do so. I recently discovered
an orphanage in Mexico that adopted 27 children, who were the
least likely to be adopted. I have been corresponding with them
via email to possibly volunteer at their school to teach English
as a second language. At this stage of life, giving back seems to
be more of a priority than anything. Thanks to The Caretaker
Gazette for letting me share my experiences and my story. My
outlook on life has expanded in so many wonderful ways thanks to
the caretaker lifestyle.

ICELAND

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED in the West Fjords and Reykjavík Music
Festival from June 17 through June 28, 2012. Volunteers will be
part of the annual music festival “Við
Djúpið”. The festival is held in the
‘capital’ of the West Fjords,
Ísafjörður, around summer solstice every year.
The event offers a series of concerts and master classes, which
are held in close cooperation with the Iceland Academy of Arts.
During the last eight years the festival has offered master
classes and concerts with national and worldwide known artists.
We will share all types of tasks related to the festival and the
group will be split according to the needs to give everyone the
chance to try out different assignments. The input of volunteers
will make a big difference in making the festival an impressive
cultural event. The tasks include receiving guests at the
airport, driving them, selling entrance tickets, controlling the
entrances in the venues, helping during the classes and concerts,
guiding and assisting participants and audience, setting up the
venues before and after the concerts and a wide variety of many
different duties. We are an integral part of creating a special
festival atmosphere in Ísafjörður and shall be
prepared for a flexible time schedule (like for evenings and
weekends). Ísafjörður is surrounded by mountains
that offer endless opportunities to enjoy nature and wilderness
during all seasons. Despite its small population, the town has a
rather urban, or one could say international, atmosphere. It is
known throughout the country for its rich cultural life, with
music and visual arts having a long tradition and firm roots in
the town’s history. In the West fjords one travels through
the whole range of Icelandic flora from the shore and meadows,
through birch and willow, to mossy moors. On a stroll amidst the
driftwood on the shore one can see birds and seals and then an
occasional arctic fox around the deserted farmsteads. In the
month of June, when the camp takes place, the sun never fully
sets at this degree of latitude and the nights are as bright as
the days. The bright nights are magical with almost 24 hours of
sunlight and staying awake enjoying the beautiful surroundings is
a unique experience. The last couple of days in this camp will
take place in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. We will
explore the world’s northernmost capital and get a glimpse
of this dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with
beautiful nature, using renewable energy sources. Volunteers will
stay at a local house/school; volunteers will sleep on mattresses
on the floor and need to bring a warm sleeping bag. Volunteers
will be provided with food and be in charge of the cooking
themselves. Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your
home country for the international evening. Please visit

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished (we aim
for 2012/2013), we want to sail the world, visiting other
eco-villages, collecting knowledge and traveling in the most
eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps us out will have the
chance to join our crew. We also work on the farm, building up
the infrastructure to create a stable base for our community. We
live with our dog, the farm cat and some (very) free-range
chickens. We keep bees and make jam; this year we harvested our
first crop of potatoes and planted next seasons raspberries.
Eventually we hope to grow all our food. We want to create a
place that will continue to flourish, where crops, thoughts,
adventures, and of course boats, can grow! We ask for a minimum
commitment of thirty days, with a week-long trial period. We
welcome anyone as long as you are happy to work hard and help out
where needed. There are enough beds for eight volunteers and the
schedule is Monday to Friday, with approximately eight to nine
hours of work a day. Please bring your pets if you can! Boat work
is predominantly during the winter and jobs include welding the
deck, installing the engine, sewing the sails, constructing the
mast and fitting the interior. If you have any particular skills
in these areas, please let us know. On the farm you may be asked
to do anything from plowing and harvesting to jam making, roof
building, beekeeping, digging, painting, or grinding the barley
for our morning porridge. It is guaranteed that you will be asked
to cook; our diet is vegetarian and we try to eat only seasonal
food, grown as locally as possible. On the weekends there are
forests and mountains to explore, and we have skis, tents and
bikes available for those who want to go adventuring. Come help
us out and join our tribe of sea-gypsies! Please send an email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX explaining why you would be
interested in our community and please place this in Capital
Letters in the Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you
have been reading our description here. Thanks.
