LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, just a quick note to thank you for sending out our email
blast for our "situations-wanted" ad. We've had some interesting
and fruitful contacts from our ad and are now in the stage of
having discussions with several property owners! We really
appreciate what you do and the connections we've made through
you. Thank you so much! Larry and Marie, Albuquerque, NM

Larry and Marie, I'm glad to hear that your Situations Wanted
email broadcast is producing good results! Our subscriber list of
property owners has continued to grow. For privacy and security
reasons, many wealthy and prominent people who subscribe to the
Gazette will not advertise anywhere and, instead, prefer to have
their staff contact our subscribers directly via our Situations
Wanted ads.

Thank you for once again running my help-wanted ad for a summer
housesitter/dog-sitter. As usual, thanks to your Gazette, I had
some great responses from people who are so qualified and
experienced. I've hired someone who I think will be perfect.
Yours is a wonderful service and I recommend you highly every
chance I get. Thanks again. Sue, Burlington, VT

Thanks for taking the time to write to us, Sue. It's always great
to hear from property owners who were successful in finding
housesitters or caretakers for their homes and properties. I'm
glad you were, once again, able to find a great person to look
after your home and dogs.

Greetings Gary and Gazette staff! Here is my renewal for another
three years. Please keep your fascinating and helpful Caretaker
Gazette coming my way. I have been serving as a caretaker for
what is now going on three years on what I think is one of the
most special locations. It's been a great place to homeschool my
two boys and grow closer as a family. We've all learned to live a
simpler life. I will be ready to move on soon and hope the
Gazette can find me something this special again. Keep up the
good work! Neil and Lisa, Bend, OR

Thanks for your renewal and nice message, Neil and Lisa. I
appreciate you and all of our subscribers and advertisers. Thanks
for sharing your experience and best of luck in your search. I'm
sure that, through the Gazette, you'll find another location that
will be as nice as what you have there!

Hi Gary, another school year is coming to a close and I just want
to let you know that, once again, I have found what I think is
going to be an interesting summer position through the Gazette!
I've been very lucky that I've been able to find such interesting
summer positions every year now since I've used a combination of
your Gazette Help Wanted ads and Situation Wanted ads. You have
such a great publication for those of us looking for seasonal
positions. In my case they are such interesting experiences that
I can share with my students when the new school year rolls
around. Thanks to you and your team! Barry, Phoenix, AZ

Hi Barry, thanks for sharing your experiences with us. It's great
that you've been able to use the Gazette to find caretaking
situations that work with your summer schedule. We have many
teachers among our subscribers who use the Gazette to find
interesting summer positions. In addition to working with one's
schedule, short-term seasonal positions are also a great way to
try out the caretaking lifestyle before committing to a longer
term position.

the road should any emergencies arise and will alert him to our

WE ARE LOOKING FOR HOUSESITTERS to mind our house and two cats
from July 20 to the end of September in Robe on the Limestone
Coast of South Australia. We live in a comfortable three bedroom
home with an open living/dining/kitchen area that looks out onto
a river and lake. There is a very small garden to be maintained,
and hanging baskets to be watered. Our house is a two minute walk
from Long Beach and a 20 minute cliff walk into Robe itself. We
have solar panels and a water tank as our attempt at being
environmentally conscious. A free-standing wood fire and
reverse-cycle keep the whole house warm and cozy in the cooler
part of the year. There's a covered patio area and a small back
lawn and garden and the whole of this area has a 'zapper' fence
around it which keeps our cats in and other cats out. There are
no houses opposite or directly behind and only one neighbor along
the side (and she's seldom there). The lake opposite the house
attracts all types of water birds. If you're lucky, you'll see
pelicans soaring in. Other bird life is on view all the time.
Robe is an historic town with lovely old buildings and fantastic
beaches as well as a rugged coast line. The town is very well
catered for in terms of restaurants and boutique shops (and one
supermarket) and it even has its own small cinema. Though there
is no public transport or taxi, everything is within walking
distance. Please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information
for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers)

CARETAKER WANTED for a Mountain Ranch in Pollock Pines. A two
bedroom mobile home is available in exchange for help around the
ranch and house. There is room for horses, and over two acres are
already fenced for the caretaker. There is also a very rustic
cabin and plenty of trailer space available. I am looking for
somebody with experience with horses or people with
carpentry/handyman skills. Prefer retired or stay-at-home people.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to live the
homesteading lifestyle. Help raise livestock, garden and harvest
fruit and share in the bounty. There are two trout streams on the
property. Plenty of places to garden. There is an apple orchard
over one hundred sixty years old still bearing sixteen different
varieties of apples. There are also raspberries, gooseberries and
loganberries to be harvested. Need help restoring the house that
has half fallen down - it was built in 1869. The ranch is
semi-remote, located five miles to closest neighbor but only
fifteen minutes on good roads to Pollock Pines with major
shopping stores and schools. There is excellent cell phone
reception. The ranch is in generator country which means you need
to provide your own generator - it works, as I have lived here
over twenty five years. The trailer appliances run on propane. We
get quite a bit of snow in the winter so a Four Wheel Drive is
essential. There are possible job opportunities with the right
people. This is a one hundred sixty acre timber property. I have
a sawmill, kiln and woodworking tools. I would like to find
somebody interested in helping expand my lumber, cabinets and
furniture sales. Also interested in turning the ranch into an
equestrian campground and give guided horseback riding in the
adjacent thousands of acres of US forest land. I do have another
caretaker, so everything is not dependent upon just one
caretaker. I'm not looking for anybody that just wants a place to
hang their hat. No drug or alcohol abusers please. There is a
background check required. Please reply with your phone number to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers)

HELP NEEDED in a farmhouse in Downeast Maine. Our farmhouse is in
a rural setting, in Washington County surrounded by forest,
farmland, lakes, and a spectacular sea coast. Our Farmstead is
totally organic and vegetarian and we have large gardens. Most of
last year, and so far this one too, we have been completing the
renovation of our home, so there are still little jobs to get
done in the house while out in the yard there are chickens and
vegetable plots to care for. In addition in the spring and summer
we have several building or landscaping projects in progress
where help is appreciated and during the quieter months the work
may also include some general house and yard cleaning, snow
clearance, fire wood cutting and stacking and other preparations
for the winter. If you are looking for somewhere to hang out for
a while in a fresh and interesting location and have a good
attitude towards work and communication then we think we should
appeal. This is not a paid position, the position is a volunteer
position and free accommodation is provided during the volunteer
period. The volunteer commitment is generally 20 to 25 hours a
week except in the three winter months when it may drop to about
10 hours a week. We're not very formal but as you will be sharing
our home with our children occasionally when we stay at the
property, we do require a photocopy/scanned picture of a legal
Photo ID (driving license, state ID, or passport) to be supplied
before arrival as proof of identity. Accommodation maybe in the
main farmhouse, in an off-the-grid caretaker's cabin close to the
farmhouse, or Flower cottage on a property nearby. Please email

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Mother and Daughter Caretaking Team
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads
is available only to Gazette subscribers)
Dates of Birth: Teresa and Alexandra: 2/1/62, and 5/1/97
Interests: Traveling, writing, photography, open street mapping,
voiceover, film extra.
Quote: "Don't die with your music still inside you." Wayne Dyer.

Teresa and Alexandra at a restaurant in Caye Caulker, Belize

A glacier in the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, the jungle of Belize,
the hot Arizona desert, green Portland, Oregon, and the
wind-swept hills of James Fort in Ireland - a few places and
things I have experienced as a caretaker.
My daughter, Alexandra, and I began housesitting when she was in
elementary school and I was looking for a way to show her
different parts of the world around school vacations and my work
commitments. It was completely by chance I saw a link to The
Caretaker Gazette and was hooked by the potential of housesitting
around the globe. I did subscribe to another two caretaking sites
after my mind was opened to the opportunities housesitting held,
but ultimately let those subscriptions lapse as the Gazette
seemed to have more geographically interesting positions and more
responses from homeowners.
The first position we applied for was in Alaska. The property
owners were looking for someone to watch over their home and pets
for a year. It was their first experience with The Caretaker
Gazette and after I responded to their advertisement they
contacted me within a week. We continued to email over a period
of months, which lead to telephone conversations as the time got
nearer to us leaving for Alaska. Because it was going to be a
year-long commitment and a great distance from our home in
Massachusetts, we put our things in storage and rented out our
home.
It was an incredible first caretaking position. We spent a few
days with the owners showing us the ropes and quirks of the house
and then they were off. I enrolled my daughter in the local
school and we fully immersed ourselves in the community. We ended
up staying in Alaska for another two years after the position
ended as we had fallen in love with the area.
After leaving Alaska and making a permanent move to the Coast of
Maine, we applied for and got chosen for a five-week Ireland
caretaking position over a Christmas holiday. We were told by the
Ireland homeowners they received dozens of responses to their
Gazette posting and I was delighted we were chosen. As with the
homeowners in Alaska and Ireland, as well as all subsequent
positions, I found that our "Mother/Daughter Team" was a big draw
for potential clients. They saw my role as a single parent as an
indicator of my capability to handle any challenges that may
arise and liked that as an independent contractor medical
transcriptionist I had flexibility working from home. As a "team"
Alexandra routinely takes on the role of caring for any animals
that are part of a housesit we are doing, and I take on the
responsibility for anything concerning the house and gardening
allowing for things to run smoothly.
While in Ireland and caring for the cat and two rescue dogs, the
owners delighted in getting video clips and updates of their
happy dogs romping around the local beach - and later pictures of
those same pups looking guilty as can be after having gotten into
and spreading the entire contents of the garbage can into every
corner of the kitchen. The look on their faces when we came home
that day to see the destruction was too precious for words. As a
rule we now always take full advantage of the technology
available today to keep property owners in touch with their home
to overwhelming rave reviews.
I would say a farm deep in the jungle of Belize was one of our
most challenging positions. Our first night was so far from what
I expected - a jaguar prowling outside the gate and howler
monkeys, well howling. I was very close to packing our bags and
heading home, but despite being uncomfortable with the
surroundings, I learned that sometimes you do need to just go
with the flow and accept the hurdles that go with caretaking. How
often do you get to live in the heart of a jungle eating fresh
fruit right off trees every day? We spent weekends away from the
farm and would venture out to discover parts of Belize and
Guatemala. I even got used to knowing that a jaguar was right
outside the gate every night.
Since Belize we have held positions in Arizona and in Oregon,
both in summer time and as different as could be - Arizona with
four rescue dogs and 110-degree temperatures and the experience
of unexpected sand storms and Oregon with one cat with
temperatures in the 70s and caring for an award-winning garden.
Vastly different positions but both leaving us with long-lasting
memories and treasured friendships.
For anyone beginning on their caretaking journey, just keep an
open mind - and a sense of humor. There will be things along the
way you did not expect, but you may end up glad for some of those
same unexpected bumps as part of the caretaker role. Keeping the
property owners well informed and immersing yourself into the
wider community are the two biggest pieces of advice I could
offer. You won't regret it, and they will appreciate you for it.

The Caretaker Gazette has opened up a world of adventure for both
Alexandra and myself and we have every intention of continuing to
apply for positions well into the future.

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want
to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.
There are lots of very exciting things happening at Sailing the
Farm right now. We are happy to report that after many long and
character-building years of boat-building, we're well on our way
to sailing later this year. Here's an overview of what's been
happening up here lately:
- Our aluminum Colin Archer sailboat is taking shape. She is
starting to look like a boat, and a good looking boat at that.
She is as yet unnamed and suggestions that we call her The
Unsinkable have fallen on deaf ears. Any and all naming
suggestions are welcome!
- We have begun to machine sheaves for the boat. Our red sails
arrive soon so it's all go, go, go in the workshop these days.
- The heads is progressing quickly and soon it will be possible
to take a shower on board. Our Belgian volunteer has fashioned
fancy toothbrush holders for all future sea gypsies.
- Last week we cut open a section of the boat shed so that we can
move the engine on board. This will be a huge milestone for the
project.
- In April, we had our first official government visit. We are
happy to report that she passed with flying colors.
- Our volunteers have started watching movies on deck every
Thursday night. Their 'Movies on Board' program is limited to
sailing movies (of course). They've watched '180 Degrees South'
and 'All is Lost' so far. Both come stamped with The Sailing the
Farm seal of approval. If you've any sailing movie
recommendations, please send them on to us!
- Some of our current volunteers/gluttons for punishment are
training for the Lillehammer half-marathon in June. At the moment
they are getting up at 6:30am to run in the woods before tucking
into a breakfast of hearty porridge and a day of boat-building.
Some even manage to fit in a spot of meditation before
breakfast.
- The snow has thawed and we have started to turn the potato
field. Our bathroom has been transformed into a temporary nursery
while we wait to start planting. Our very versatile bathroom is
also home to seven chirpy baby chickens! Our long-serving
captain's To-Do-List is diminishing every week, but there's a lot
of hard work still to do. We'd love to welcome more volunteers
(old and new) this summer. A can-do attitude and lots of
enthusiasm are the only skills we require (though more specific
skills are very welcome also). So if you are free and can commit
to a month, please get in contact with us ASAP so that we can
book you in to help. There will be a launch party in Oslo later
on this year when she takes to the water. Please send an email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) explaining why you would
be interested in our community and please place this in the
Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you have been
reading this. Love from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information
for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers) - a sea
gypsy tribe of tomorrow!
