LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, We now have two wonderful caretakers living on our
retreat thanks to our caretaker-wanted ad that ran in The
Caretaker Gazette! We are so thankful for all the caretakers
we've found through you over the years who volunteer their time
in exchange for living in one of the most beautiful places in the
world. Their efforts make it possible for our teachers to offer
an affordable retreat for their students. The couples who have
come to us through our previous Gazette ads are the best we've
ever had and I can see already this new team will be just as
wonderful. Great results through your publication! Thank you, Rob
M., Waikoloa, HI

Rob, I'm glad to hear that your caretaker-wanted ad in the
Gazette resulted in positive responses to help you with your
property needs there. It sounds like your property will be in
good hands. Please spread the word about the Gazette to other
Hawaiian property owners in your area who can use it.

Thanks Gary! I have to share my story with you ... I subscribed
to your publication when I lived in Texas. I arrived in Texas via
a divorce so it wasn't actually my choice to live there. During
my 11 years in Texas I was grossly under-employed considering my
skill sets, which didn't make the location ideal for me. I found
your online publication and it intrigued me as I had done a
similar job in my early 20's, a position with multiple
properties, multiple states and ranch settings. Being a native
Californian I wanted to return to California so I set about
finishing a remodel on my home and preparing to sell and relocate
back to California. I sold my home and moved, staying for a while
in Southern California, earning a Holistic Health Practitioner
certification and had my sights to go back to Northern
California. I then received one of your caretaker help-wanted
emails that highlighted a position in Auburn, California - I
thought...what the heck?! After close scrutiny and multiple trips
I was selected from multiple candidates to fill this very trusted
position. This is my second experience with a very well appointed
family and this one with primarily one location but 900 very busy
acres. I enjoy my work and it's very fulfilling! Thanks for being
the conduit that brought me back to an area that I simply adore!
Lisa K. Auburn, CA

Congratulations Lisa! Thank you for sharing your experiences
with us. I'm sure our readers will be inspired by your story.
Best of luck to you and please keep us updated.

Dear Gary, Regretfully, I spent the last 18 years unaware of your
publication or the community of people it represents. Worse yet,
I spent the last seven months desperately seeking caretaker help
in all the wrong avenues. But last May someone shared a back
issue of The Caretaker Gazette with me, and my own ad came out in
the September/October issue. Within a week of the ad's
appearance, I had someone here to help me so that I could move
about as needed and teach people how to have permanent, happy
relationships with their dogs. I also "met" by phone and email
more "caring" people than I previously knew existed. Now I have
my own Gazette subscription, which I love. Thank you, thank you,
and thank you!! Judy M., Buena Vista, CO

Judy thanks for writing. We hear this all the time. Many
property owners have tried newspaper help-wanted ads, and many
times getting disastrous results. I'm glad your Gazette ad worked
so quickly for you!

The housesitter-wanted ad you ran for me was terrific! I received
many replies and found someone ideal, to fill the housesitting
position. Many thanks! Steve I. Santa Fe, NM

Steve, chalk it up to our wonderful subscribers who
applied!

are just following our dreams. Our home is in Nove Hamry, a small
village in the Karlovy Vary District. We don't smoke and we
kindly request volunteers to respect the nature around here and
not to smoke. Our house has 15 rooms and three big halls, and one
big hall we are planning to make into a restaurant - pay as you
wish, with free tea for the travelers passing by. Another hall
will be used for meditation and another hall will be for yoga. We
are working on reconstruction for five to six hours a day/five
days a week. Besides that, we can all prepare food (breakfast,
lunch, and dinner), clean the dishes, and play with our young
children. Some evenings we can play games, music, apply henna,
bring wood from the forest and prepare a fire, have interesting
talks, etc. On the day off, we all can be cooking together and
going out for a picnic, and enjoy the day. Summer is a good time
for biking and walking, and this area is good for skiing in the
winter. The minimum stay is two weeks, and we need some help in
our reconstruction, babysitting our daughters, cleaning and
farming in the spring and summer. We will provide rooms with

Linda Allen at the Villa

La Bella Italia. I've always loved to travel, ever since I took
my first trip back in the 1970's to Europe on Eurail passes with
girlfriends. I lived in Mexico for five years and France for two,
as an ESL teacher, my first career. I feel awake, aware and
living in the moment, whenever I travel. I generally travel for
conferences, to visit friends, or just explore. So when a friend
of mine told me about The Caretaker Gazette, it opened up a whole
new world of possibilities, where I could live in a region,
rent-free in exchange for caring for a home, villa, pets, a
winery, or whatever.
As I am looking for a new chapter in my life, more global
living, using my lifetime of skills and talents, and am available
to travel any time of the year, I began diligently reading The
Caretaker Gazette. I even called the publisher Gary a few times,
just to get the feel of how to go about this. I got two good
friends to write me character references, so I had those handy
and ready. Low and behold I saw the ad for a caretaker/guardian
in a villa in Tuscany. I immediately emailed and told them of my
background, interest, etc. I speak basic Italian and wanted to
improve it by living in the country and studying at the same
time. I was also seeking to live in a quieter, less hectic place.
I got a positive reply from Agostino, the owner, and was asked to
choose what three months I wanted to be there. For U.S. citizens
we can only legally be in Europe, the Schengen area of 27
countries, for three months a year. I chose May, June, and July
of this past year.
So that's how it all began. I know how to travel light so I was
ready to leave for Paris with one carry-on and a backpack. I took
a train to Rome and then to Pisa and kept in touch with the Villa
owner Agostino via email. The Villa di Corliano is a 15th century
villa on a Roman road between Pisa and Lucca, in the region known
as San Guilano di Terme. Agostino was at the train station to
meet me in Pisa and take me to the villa. My position agreed upon
was to be a guardian/caretaker and stay in the Villa every night
by midnight and do two hours of light gardening clean up in
exchange for the free rent. The Villa was originally a music
academy and has been converted to a B&B inside. I stayed in the
official guardian's room at the top of a spiral staircase and was
there in case of emergencies, or if a guest forgot the door code,
needed a cab, etc. or someone needed something.
The Villa and park on the grounds are of exceptional beauty,
full of famous trees, animals, and history. My specific job was
to keep tidy and clean the grounds immediately surrounding the
Villa, trim the roses, rake a few leaves, etc. for there are 2-3
other full-time gardeners. On Corliano there's an old frantoia
(olive mill) - (the Villa won awards for its world class olive
oil back in the 1800's) a koffeehaus (where coffee was roasted),
and a separate building that's been turned into a very well-known
restaurant with all local Tuscan specialties. I had a small room
with a bed, kitchenette, bathroom, TV, Wi-Fi, all overlooking the
entrance to the Villa. There are grocery stores nearby so
Agostino took me to do my first big shopping for the basics
(olive oil, cheese, produce).
On a typical day I would be up early, have a light breakfast in
my room, then walk down to the gardens. The mornings were always
spectacularly beautiful with the birds and magnificent trees (my
favorite was one that was planted by Napoleon's Army). I would
trim and clean and enjoy the fresh air and peacefulness of the
surroundings. Mid-morning, I might buy an espresso at the bar in
the B&B or, if it was a market day, catch the bus in front of the
Villa and go into Pisa about 10 minutes away, have breakfast in
the market, and shop and enjoy the activities. I would also go to
nearby Lucca, a charming walled, medieval town. I invited my
friends from Rome for a visit so we travelled by car around
Tuscany. I studied Italian daily and practiced with the staff and
got better and better as time went by.
Of course, there are many more stories about the Villa, its
history, and life in Tuscany. Needless to say the food and wine
are delicious and the people very hospitable. I want to encourage
anyone reading this to explore the multitude of ads in The
Caretaker Gazette and go for it! There are many wonderful
experiences to be had. Take the first step. If it's your first
time, then maybe choose one in the U.S. until you get comfortable
with living away from home for a few months at a time.
I'm invited back to Corliano anytime and I am also ready to be in
another villa, winery, estate, B&B - wherever there are good
people, animals, birds, gardens. I chose Italy this past year to
improve my Italian and I am proud to say that I made great
strides. I already speak fluent Spanish and French so I could
easily work in any countries where those languages are used. I am
so glad my friend told me about The Caretaker Gazette. I hope you
too find your extraordinary experiences and piece of paradise. I
am grateful every day...and my glass is always half full.

Dear Esteemed Conservationists: On Accomack County's bayside on
the Eastern Shore of Virginia lies a precious ecosystem like no
other. "Wild Acres"'s 127.7 acres of forests, marshes, field,
edges, and over 1.3 miles of waterfront is home to a biodiversity
of indigenous mammals, birds, herptiles, invertebrates, fish, and
wild flora. As a nurturing steward, I have managed "Wild Acres"
estate, my homeland, for dwindling Northern Bobwhite and other
game and nongame species, including neotropical songbirds. I
would like this land and water's environmental integrity and
wildlife heritage to remain intact. This haven would be ideal for
nature lovers, sportsmen, fishermen, natural resource education
programs, and/or an ecolodge. (Also on the estate is an "as is"
bungalow with a Colonial wood-embellished fireplace and alcove).
Currently, "Wild Acres" is not listed with a realtor. I would
like to work directly with an appropriate conservation entity to
purchase and continue to nourish this rare property. Pristine
property like this is rapidly disappearing. Given "Wild Acres"'s
vast attributes, I think that $895,000 is a fair price. I look
forward to hearing from interested persons and will show "Wild
Acres" by appointment only. Please contact XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
