LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

You sent an email update for a job that we responded to and got
the job. We have been here since last May. The job is going well.
Without the Gazette, we would not have found this opportunity, so
we thank you very much. We will certainly be renewing our
subscription when we are ready to find our next caretaker
opportunity through the Gazette. C. and J. M. Port Leyden, NY

Carl and Janine, that’s great news! Please let us know how
it works out and if we can do a Caretaker Profile story about
your experiences there in a future issue of the Gazette.

Gary, I just wanted to give you an update on my help-wanted ad
responses as I am quite pleased. I only received two calls,
however they were quality calls and one looks like quite a good
fit for my arrangement. The subscribers are quite qualified and
serious and I am thrilled that I placed my help-wanted ad with
you! You can use this as a testimonial. Sincerely, J. S., Tampa,
FL

Jill, I’m glad to read that you received serious, qualified
responses to your help-wanted ad that ran in the Gazette. If you
find that you need to rerun and update your ad, please let us
know and we’ll be happy to publish your ad in a future
issue.

Dear Dunn Family, I've been subscribing to, reading and enjoying
The Caretaker Gazette since sometime around 1998 (maybe even
1997?). I applied for a position that was placed in your
publication back in 1999, and by 2000, I had been accepted by the
property owner as his selected choice to be his property
caretaker. He went through "MANY" applications for this
positions before finally narrowing his selection down to two
potential candidates. "I won!" That was over a decade
ago! The property was sold last year to new owners who have
generously allowed me to continue on as the resident property
caretaker/security guard. As long as I have lived here, I have
paid no rent, and I've been blessed to live on the property as if
I own it! I can do anything I would do if it were mine, including
the building of my own home! I also have the freedom to run my
own small self-employed business as a handyman and building and
grounds maintenance man. Thank you for making this happen through
your awesome publication. Thank you Caretaker Gazette! J. H., O
Brien, OR

Thanks for your letter and for sharing your wonderful experiences
as a property caretaker, John. We're glad that The Caretaker
Gazette played a role in helping you to achieve your great
lifestyle. Please spread the good word about the Gazette!

Wow, were you ever correct when you said I would get a response
to my cat/housesitting ad! I came home from a few days away to
find nearly 40 emails and several letters in response - I haven't
even gotten my copy of The Caretaker Gazette in the mail yet so
it came as a wonderful surprise. And, honestly, how do you ever
even choose? They all (or most all) sound absolutely great and
the kind of people you would like to know and have in your home.
Thank you; thank you for providing such a terrific service. N. M.
Cedar Key, FL

Nancy, more and more property owners, like you, tell us that they
have found their best housesitters by advertising in the Gazette.
Please keep us in mind the next time you’ll need a
cat/housesitter for your place in Florida.

Chirripo, our agricultural ecological farm is well named. It is
situated in the county of Perez Zeledon, three hours south of San

farm we provide lodging and three meals a day in exchange for
roughly five to six hours of work. You can stay in one of four

also space available for tents. The work will include
construction, feeding the animals, planting seeds, soil
conservation, and maintenance of medical plants, using and
producing organic fertilizer, maintaining the spring-water wells,
and harvesting crops. The work is at times challenging, but
volunteers have invariably found it stimulating and rewarding.

HELP NEEDED at the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We are an off
grid eco sustainable organic farmstead that incorporates organic
sustainable agroecology, permaculture, agroforestry, and
regenerative agriculture in order to live within the
means/carrying capacity of the land and within the earth fair
share ecofootprint, so we co-create/responsibly steward a more
fair, sustainable, and healthy planet. We live more simply so
others (human and other species) can simply live. We need help
from Peace Corp like minded folks so we can help save and take
care of the planet. We want to attract folks who have more
altruistic/giving personalities and who want to directly stop the
insanity, vs. self indulgence/takers who are looking for a new
adventure/vacation/cheap hangout (still about me, myself, and I,
escapism, and adding to the problem). You can learn to become
part of the solution instead part of the problem. We are an
educational living project that aligns with peer reviewed
scientific evidence that inspires us to come up with solutions to
co-create the mother of us all in a fair, healthy, sustainable
and responsible way. Rick is a physician and needs help so that

about creating a fair, responsible, healthy and sustainable
Earth. Do you feel the pulse of the planet? Have you heard the
voice of Ishmael the Gorilla? Long term/occasional short term

couple/single "homestead dance" or work trade in
exchange for housing: 21 hours per week for single (e.g. three

supplements for the cats. We use only hand tools such as loppers,
bow saws, pruning saws, axes and transport fodder, green/animal
manures in wheelbarrows. Bulk organic food is available for extra
hours (about two hours per week for most of your calories). Six

ICELAND

SEEDS VOLUNTEERS needed to work this year once again with the
local municipality in Patreksfjörður, in the West Fjords
from September 4 through September 18. SEEDS has been working in
the municipality for the last seven years in different projects.
The West Fjords are among the most breathtakingly beautiful
places in Iceland, with its high mountains and dramatic fjords
cutting deep into the landscape. Volunteers will be beautifying
the town of Patreksfjörður and surroundings by
maintaining walking paths, planting trees and taking care of
green areas. We will probably do some painting jobs as well and
various other tasks that need to be done around town. The working
plan will be flexible and it will depend on the needs of our
local host and the advance of the diverse projects in the area as
well as weather conditions. The weather conditions in Iceland can
be unpredictable, be prepared to experience different kinds of
weather and bring warm clothing since most of the work takes
place outdoors. SEEDS volunteers will be hosted in a local house
in a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping
bag. Food supplies will be provided and a kitchen will be
available. Volunteers will share the duties of cooking and
cleaning. Patreksfjörður is a typical fishing village
with a population of about 800. It is the biggest town in the
southern part of the West Fjords. Patreksfjörður got its
name from its first settler, whose spiritual guide was St.
Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Somewhat fittingly it was
in this fjord that the first potatoes were cultivated in Iceland
in the 18th century. Volunteers should have a motivation for
working outdoors and be prepared to experience different kinds of
weather in a very isolated region of the country. There will be
countless opportunities to discover the area by foot or to hike
the surroundings; the location is surrounded by stunning nature.
Our hosting partner will organise free time activities in the
area; for instance visiting the local swimming pool, horseback
riding and/or kayaking. To learn more, please visit

CARETAKER PROFILE
“Dennis Manz – Property caretaker specializing in
remote and challenging environments”

Dennis Manz

Over the past seven years, caretaker experiences have taken me
from the very remote, hot and very dry desert of Canyonlands
National Park, to a beautiful 2,400 square foot residence on a
secluded lake in Northern New Mexico, to a remote cabin at 9,600
feet in the Elk Mountains of Colorado, to a dude ranch in the
Crazy Mountains of Montana, and currently to a small ranch with a
Mediterranean climate in the Ventana Wilderness of California.
Those adventures have been filled with challenges and unique
learning experiences, teaching me to appreciate the importance of
being patient and self-sufficient.
After working in the corporate world for 25 years, I decided to
spend the rest of my days exploring different parts of the United
States. The first 25 years of my life were spent in southern
Wisconsin. I graduated from Craig High School in Janesville,
Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin for a few
years before setting out to travel the world. I never made it
around the world, but did travel (mostly hitchhiking) through
quite a few countries before ending up back in the United States.
A friend offered me a job in the solar energy field. I jumped at
the chance and moved to California, which was my home for the
next 25 years. In 2003 I officially retired from the corporate
world, subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette, and began my journey
as a full-time property caretaker.
One of my recent positions was as a housesitter on a 600-acre
ranch in the high desert, 40 miles east of Cedarville,
California. The gentleman I house sat for is a birder and has
identified 78 different species of birds sighted from the
property. Rancho Rechiso, where I was housesitting, redefined for
me the meaning of quiet, undisturbed, and no pollution. The
property is off-grid with solar power, wood, and propane as
sources of energy. There is no noise, radiation, or any other
type of environmental pollution out on the property.
Being a property caretaker is definitely a great alternative
lifestyle compared to paying rent for a small apartment in a busy
city. In my opinion there is no better way to reduce monthly
expenses and still maintain a decent standard of living. The best
things about being a property caretaker are a renewed sense of
personal freedom, reduction in my monthly living expenses, and
the experience of visiting new and interesting places.
However, just the opportunity to experience a renewed sense of
freedom is an invaluable gift. In the 9-5 world there is always a
faster pace with time frame pressures for having to complete job
duties. In property caretaker situations there is still a great
sense of responsibility, but there is generally a sense of
freedom that allows the caretaker to set his or her own schedule.
Of course there are still emergency situations that will occur
from time to time that command immediate and sustained action.
Last winter I was caretaker at the Rocky Mountain Biological Labs
in Gothic, Colorado living at 9,500 feet in the Elk Mountain
range. The annual snowfall is around 400 inches. I had
responsibilities that could be accomplished within my own
scheduled time. One such job was climbing a steep 150-foot hill
with typically new and deep snow to get to the weather station.
This was often done in high winds and low visibility conditions.
The key was being prepared, dressing warm, good snowshoes, and
taking the time needed to avoid mistakes. Trying to hurry through
this sort of task could have proven to be very dangerous. Another
job I had every few days was cutting firewood, since that was the
only way to keep my cabin warm enough to survive. I had to dig
out an 8-foot trench on the woodshed side of my cabin to cut my
firewood. The wind would blow down through that trench off of a
12,000-foot high peak and would chill your bones.
Of course being a property caretaker is not just doing whatever
you want whenever you want to do it. The keys for being a
successful caretaker are simple. First and foremost you are
serving the property owners’ needs. I always respect and
show the ultimate in responsibility for the properties I take
care of. I always follow through with commitments and take pride
in doing every task to the best of my ability. I always want to
leave a clean footprint where I live and work. This means doing
the best job possible and always keeping the best interests of
the property owner in mind. This philosophy has worked well for
me and continually rewarded me with new and interesting caretaker
opportunities.
I have been asked several times if I get bored living in remote
areas and being in situations where the caretaker may not see
anyone for weeks or even months at a time. My response is no,
bored is not in my vocabulary. I never feel detached from the
real world. I think my claim to this comes from the fact that I
truly enjoy solitude, embrace silence, and always have had the
Internet to keep in touch with friends and family. I also know
that the solitude will not last forever. I have a creative mind
which keeps me occupied doing things. I think people with a
genuine love of the outdoors, that truly enjoy living alone, and
are creative, will find it easier to adjust to the life of a
remote property caretaker.

I AM AN OLDER WOMAN, living on five mostly undeveloped acres just
outside Roswell, NM (yes, that Roswell) who needs help both
inside and out, including small plumbing and electrical jobs,
tiling, carpentry, landscaping (xeriscape), fencing and turning
at least half of the property into a site suitable for goats,
llamas and chickens, as well as a garden. And, if you're into
cooking or housekeeping, I wouldn't turn that down either. I also
have several older motorcycles (my means of transportation) that
could use some TLC if anyone has mechanical knowledge. You'd get
a private room (shared bath) in my home, and could work as many
or as few hours a day as you'd like. I love meeting folks from
around the world. The help will be nice, but just meeting
interesting folks is the best part. I'm also a font of knowledge
about what there is to do in New Mexico (aside from Roswell
aliens) and would give you lots of time to explore. Since I'm new
to this I have no references. For more information, please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

THIS IS AN HISTORIC HIPPIE COMMUNE from the 60's, which has
become a working permaculture farm for vegetables, berries, fruit
and chickens. The Rio Hondo drains Taos Ski Valley (18 miles
away) into the Rio Grande (one mile away). Our fields of grasses,
sage, pinion pine and juniper look up to the Sangre de Christo
Mountains and down on the Rio Hondo gorge. We live and teach
self-sufficiency, have a large adobe solar home and shop,
outbuildings, greenhouse, and root cellar. We love art, music,
beauty, simplicity, natural healing, and helping one another
attain skills to live successfully in challenging times. We're
happy to share teaching and learning farming and survival skills
with others who are open, flexible, and independent. We accept a
limited number of farm helpers but are always open to meet new
people and to talk. Experience is great yet a solid work ethic
and genuine interest in sustainable agriculture are more
important. A good helper should be able to listen to directions,
but also be innovative and take initiative. Farming in the
northern New Mexico climate is challenging and full of surprises,
so it's difficult to set regular, daily task schedules most times
of the year. Thus, we are looking for people who are flexible and
adaptable, who can focus on one task and then quickly change
gears to something else. This includes the ability to work
different schedules at different times. We expect a solid
twenty-five hours per week, and offer flexible down-time to
pursue your own interests here or in the culturally rich nearby
village of Taos and New Mexico itself. This experience is more
than farming. New Buffalo is also about living and working
together in a group setting. Though there are no children at the
moment, we are already a diverse group of people in terms of age,
and the ability to work and live in a multi-generational setting
is a must. We are looking for people with the emotional maturity
and communication skills to be able to discuss issues that might
arise with honesty and compassion. At the moment we are hoping to
fill a few, very specific, longer-term positions. The first,
ideally at least a four-month minimum, is for part-time farming
and part-time housekeeping that would include food and a private
room in the main building. The housekeeping tasks are fairly
light, but helping to manage the main building is a must, and
could involve helping occasional guests, workshops, or retreats.
The second position or rather, positions would be another
four-month minimum stay, preferably from June through September.
Ideally, a couple would fill this position and live in a
comfortable two-room adobe attached to our new 900' greenhouse.
There is also a very rustic, plumbed space which could be
developed into a kitchen. This position would be mostly farming
and includes daily management of the greenhouse attached to the
facility. Work could be shared between two people, but a genuine
interest in small-scale, regenerative agriculture is a must. If
any of these situations seem interesting, please write to us and
we would be happy to discuss it further and answer any questions.
Please mail your letter to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

NICARAGUA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. My name is Celine, a 29-year-old French lady
who is living near the city of Leon, Nicaragua. I would like to
tell you a little story, so pay attention please: I have
purchased land in a little authentic fishing and surfing village
in Nicaragua called Jiquilillo, in order to start a non-profit
project for children and teenagers. This village is beautiful.
One can find many open-hearted people and children everywhere
here who just want to learn more, but unfortunately they
don’t have this chance, unlike powerful countries such as
the United States or European ones, children don't have the
chance to attend to learning based activities or practice any
kind of sport because there are no facilities to make it
possible. I bought some land and I would like to build a
playground area and an art school. Currently everything is in
process, the more help I get, the faster we'll be, and obviously
the sooner my social non-profit project will be done. It is not
an organization. I am doing everything on my own. I have a lot of
ideas in mind but I need people to make them real. It would be
great to get some construction workers with experience,
carpenters, painters, etc. and naturally some engineers. Child
lovers with no experience are also welcome. My idea is that every
single child develops his/her creativity, imagination, etc. to
give them a chance to learn art, painting, languages, jewelry
making, dancing, playing instruments, circus stuff, cooking and
many other things, that are totally possible to learn in another
country but not here. I would like to give them a place where
they could play freely, learn skating, climbing on a bouldering
wall, play ping pong and table football, as extra activities
after school, as they have plenty of time and expect to make the
most of it. I first need volunteers who are able to help me to
build a concrete skate bowl, a wooden climbing bouldering wall, a
ping pong table and many other games. Also, renovate an eleven
meter long school bus which actually will be the volunteering
place initially. The bus will consist of a five bed sleeping
area, and another area for a kitchen shared with a table and some
seats. Work will consist in painting the interior part of the bus
and install all the facilities. Currently, there is just a toilet
and a shower and an open rancho where a campsite can be placed,
with hammocks, a gas cooker, seats, etc. Naturally you must be a
nature lover. It is all I can provide now because everything
needs to be built, but once the construction is finished, it
would be a lovely, colorful and artistic place where everyone
will be welcome. Once the bus is done, volunteers will be given
shelter in exchange to 3/4 every day hours giving language, art,
and yoga classes. The place offers lots of opportunities for the
volunteers during their free time such as surfing, climbing
volcanoes, fishing, etc. so, if you are an adventurous traveler
who feels like helping me to give a better future for the
children, I can offer you a place to stay if you give me a hand
with the project and make a better world. Hopefully you can join
me! Please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
