WE ARE LOOKING FOR HOUSESITTERS to mind our house in Robe, on the
southeastern Limestone Coast of South Australia, and two cats
from September 30 to October 27. We live in a comfortable three
bedroomed home with an open living/dining/kitchen area that looks
out onto a river and lake. There is a very small garden to be
maintained. Our house is a two minute walk from Long Beach and a
20 minute cliff walk into Robe itself. We have solar panels and a
water tank as our attempt at being environmentally conscious. A
free-standing wood fire and reverse-cycle keep the whole house
warm and cozy in the cooler part of the year. There's a covered
patio area and a small back lawn and garden and the whole of this
area has a 'zapper' fence around it which keeps our cats in and
other cats out. There are no houses opposite or directly behind
and only one neighbor along the side (and she's seldom there).
The lake opposite the house attracts all types of water birds. If
you're lucky, you'll see pelicans soaring in. Other bird life is
on view all the time. Robe is an historic town with lovely old
buildings and fantastic beaches as well as a rugged coast line.
The town is very well catered for in terms of restaurants,

CROATIA

YOU ARE WELCOME at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, our eco initiative in
nature. We left city life in The Netherlands to live on our
organic homestead (15 hectares) on the top of a hill, inland
Croatia, with forests all around. As a volunteer we expect you to
be part of our family and daily routines, like cooking and
cleaning, taking care of the animals and the garden. We work with
Permaculture and the moon calendar to develop our garden, our
forest garden to be, terraces on a hill side and our living fence
(with berries and fruit trees). The approach to projects or tasks
is to have fun together and deliver quality work. In all we ask
ourselves everyday how we can do it in the best way possible.
Usually we start the day with weeding the vegetable garden (as a
slow start of the day) and after that, we work on something that
is high on our priority list. Besides that, we can work on other
(smaller) projects like pruning, composting, fencing the terrain,
cleaning terrain, planting (fruit) trees and shrubs, harvesting,
processing the harvest (drying in solar dryer, making
jam/syrup/wine/liqueur) and sometimes some light construction
work. The work that you will do, of course depends on the season
of your visit and on our list of priorities. It is a start-up
project and has all the aspects you can expect of something
starting. Construction work going on, materials lying all around,
messiness, jungle, many ideas ... and slowly we develop. Many
valuable mistakes brought us to our place as it is now. We trust
that the experimental atmosphere will be appreciated by you as it
has been by most of those before you. Please write us about
yourself (please don't make yourself look nicer than you are),
and we can send you our extended information. If Bogata Suma
seems appealing to you, think twice if you don't like children.
Or don't want to get dirty hands. And please don't come if your
motivation is only cost reduction of travelling. If we still fit
in there, have a go! And don't forget to take a bag of fun with
you! We're looking for volunteers that want to stay for at least
four weeks. Please contact "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers." You can learn more at our website here:

Craig Breder

It is difficult summing up a life on just one page, I could
easily use that up just recounting my wanderings around the
Orkneys and Ireland for a summer. I suppose starting at the
beginning would be best. I was born into a military family in
Atlantic City. After moving over a dozen times I graduated from
Karlsruhe American High School, in what was then West Germany.
Returning to New Jersey I enrolled in a college for a couple
years. Coming to the conclusion I could attain the same knowledge
being offered just by reading the books, I left and took a job
manufacturing surfboards. With the bankruptcy of the company I
moved on to the building trades. Unfortunately the recession of
the early 1980's happened and construction work dried up.
No stranger to travel, I headed out west; eventually ending up at
a resort in Colorado working as a janitor. I actually found it
rather humorous since "Atlas Shrugged" was one of my favorite
books in high school, and the resort was not too far from Rand.
So I started pursuing the American Dream; starting a family,
opening a business (paint contractor), and enjoying ordinary
life. They say nothing is constant except change and I learned
that lesson when I came home from work one day and found that it
all had vanished. A little dazed and confused, I moved into the
woods in order to consider my options. Coming out a few months
later, I started to travel the country; supporting myself by
working for room and board, selling some of my crafts, and the
occasional paint job. At a concert one day it dawned on me that I
was still enrolled in school, it was just that it was a mystery
school and I wouldn't be graduating until I passed on.
About this time a former employee of mine offered me a permanent
painting position at his family's lodge. Being that it was a
summer resort and the winters are not conducive to outdoor work,
I only had to work during the spring and fall. With plenty of
time to travel and earning a decent wage, I started to do my
Spirit Walk overseas. Eventually, I started taking on more
management responsibilities at the lodge. Besides the painting
and staining of new and existing buildings, as well as the upkeep
on the family's other houses, I was training the new managers and
inspecting their departments. My business card read Painter,
Quality Control Manager, and Spiritual Advisor. I was actually
offered a place in "Who's Who in America's Executives,
Professionals, and Entrepreneurs". Unfortunately an email address
was required and I was still pretending I could ignore the
Computer Age. It was then decided the lodge where I was working
at the time could use a caretaker. I assumed the role of
caretaker. We winterized a cabin and I started staying most of
the winter. It became my favorite part of the job, even without
electricity or water. I had plenty of free time to read and do
crafts; solitude, since you had to ski or snowshoe in; and
silence, except for natural sounds. We did eventually get power
and started plowing the road when the family started developing
some of the property. This role of caretaker and the
responsibilities continued for 10 years until the owners decided
to move on and sold the property to a corporation.
I have never gone overseas for a specific job. When I travel I
normally just get a room for the first two nights at my point of
entry, talk to some of the locals and then formulate a plan (I
rarely leave from the same country I arrived in). I then check my
journal for possible positions that I had previously written down
from past issues of The Caretaker Gazette. For example, on my way
from Ireland to the Canary Islands I stayed at a farm in Portugal
and a B&B in Cadiz, Spain, both of which I had found via postings
in The Caretaker Gazette.
I still have the cabin and the painting job, but due to the new
pay scale I work during the summer for the maintenance
department. During the winter I go to Florida and help my parents
out. In my youth I always tried to take the path no one had taken
before, but now the least travelled ones are fine. The options
now include selling off some of my collections by opening an art
gallery, starting a company inspecting resorts, selling my crafts
at renaissance fairs, or becoming an itinerant painter of
Victorian houses. Another caretaking job would allow me to do all
these things or none. Now that it's time for something new, I've
been reading The Caretaker Gazette a little more closely. For me,
the newsletter has always been useful in finding temporary work
overseas that offers room and board. Now though, I'm interested
in something a little more permanent and plan to use the Gazette
to find that too. The South Pacific or Ireland would be nice, but
I'm certainly open to something new and different. No worries,
Mate; the adventure never ends.

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished, we
want to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.
Anyone who helps us out will have the chance to join our crew. We
also work on the farm, building up the infrastructure to create a
stable base for our community. We live with our dog, the farm cat
and some (very) free-range chickens. We keep bees and make jam;
this year we harvested our first crop of potatoes and planted
next seasons raspberries. Eventually we hope to grow all our
food. We want to create a place that will continue to flourish,
where crops, thoughts, adventures, and of course boats, can grow!
We ask for a minimum commitment of thirty days, with a week-long
trial period. We welcome anyone as long as you are happy to work
hard and help out where needed. There are enough beds for eight
volunteers and the schedule is Monday to Friday, with
approximately eight to nine hours of work a day. Please bring
your pets if you can! Boat work is predominantly during the
winter and jobs include welding the deck, installing the engine,
sewing the sails, constructing the mast and fitting the interior.
If you have any particular skills in these areas, please let us
know. On the farm you may be asked to do anything from plowing
and harvesting to jam making, roof building, beekeeping, digging,
painting, or grinding the barley for our morning porridge. It is
guaranteed that you will be asked to cook; our diet is vegetarian
and we try to eat only seasonal food, grown as locally as
possible. On the weekends there are forests and mountains to
explore, and we have skis, tents and bikes available for those
who want to go adventuring. Come help us out and join our tribe
of sea-gypsies! Please send an email to "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Note: Contact information for these ads is available only to

our community and please place this in Capital Letters in the
Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you have been

and pictographs decorating the canyon walls. 21 acres of grape
vines, a thousand fruit and nut trees, and a prolific garden make
up the main work to be done on the property. Length of stay is up
to you, ranging from a couple of weeks, to all summer. Working
months are between the 1st of March and end of November, the
beginning and end of the frost free days. Average group size is
six to eight, and accommodations are in a cabin built by
volunteers. Everyone is expected to spend six hours on weekdays
learning how to prune and take care of grape vines or fruit and
nut trees, weed, harvest, and work on any variety of other
projects. Since we are 15 miles from the nearest town (10 on dirt
roads) we try to carpool as much as possible, so just hop a ride
whenever someone is going to town. I am a 27-year-old graduate of
UC Santa Cruz, and I decided to turn the ranch into a viable
organic farm and vineyard. I provide three meals a day plus
snacks, showers, and comfortable beds. The weekends are spent
exploring the national parks or the endless high desert
wilderness around the property. Ideal volunteers are adventurous,
hardworking, and can be kind and respectful in a group
environment. Last minute volunteers welcome. Come out and enjoy a
glass of red wine sitting around a campfire under the stars with
a great group of people. Please contact "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
