SMALL PRIVATE HOME on a 40-acre ranchette needs a semi-retired
caretaker couple. We have a beautiful, secluded, woodland
property with dramatic boulders and mild 4-season weather 30
minutes from Prescott, AZ providing great shopping, restaurants,

two hours north of Phoenix. We are at 5,500 feet. We are a couple
with a young daughter with just a bit too much on our hands.
Duties include daily caretaking of five horses, light
housekeeping one day per week, plus occasional maintenance of
property. Horse feeding is daily but other duties are flexible.
Days off would be arranged. Work is light and would average to
less than 30 hours a week combined across two people. Additional

Gary, with the big slump in the economy, I am wondering how the
Gazette is doing - are there still property owners who need
housesitters and caretakers? I am struggling and I wonder if this
has affected the property caretaking field. E. B., Ada, OK

Eric, at the Gazette, we have been as busy as ever. The global
economic downturn has not had a negative impact on the demand for
housesitters and property caretakers. In fact, we have had
several listings from real estate investors who are stuck with
empty homes that they can’t unload and from property owners
who couldn’t sell their homes and, rather than leave them
vacant when they were transferred to another location, will
employ the services of a caretaker or housesitter to look after
their property.  On the caretaker and housesitter side, we have
many people who have turned to housesitting and property
caretaking either because of the rent-free living aspect of it or
because they have been laid off due to their company’s
downsizing.

Dear Gary, I wanted to let you know after we posted our
Situations-Wanted ad with The Caretaker Gazette we received four
replies to our advertisement. We interviewed with two of them and
we accepted one job offer. The position includes a three bedroom
home, salary and benefits on a 2,800 acre estate!  Thank you!

Wendy, we have over 3,000 property owners who subscribe to the

Within a few days after I joined Caretaker Gazette and placed

response for a one month housesit assignment in Virginia even
though the homeowner did not need me for almost a year - we
scheduled ahead even though we'd never met each other. We kept in
touch once a month while I was assigned to another long-term
housesit. After six months I paid a short visit to Virginia and

later I showed up as promised and loved my assignment. The owners

ARKANSAS

APPRENTICESHIP POSITION available. Located in the Ozark
Mountains, with plenty of recreation such as kayaking, canoeing,
hiking and climbing. Continuing development of a permaculture
demonstration site consisting of passively heated and cooled
straw bale building, windmill, photovoltaic panel array,
vegetable garden, food forest (two acres), community gathering
area with outdoor kitchen, pond with trellises, wildlife area and
the establishment of a non-profit organization for permaculture
education. So far, about two-thirds of the food forest has been
planted. The site is exceptionally beautiful and located within
the city limits of Clarksville. Planting of trees, shrubs and
vines. Cultivation of biointensive garden beds. Working on
aesthetic aspects, which can include artwork or the building of

WE ARE BEGINNING THE GRAND ADVENTURE and need help. We have sold
out and moved to a new place way back in the hills in Newton
County. It is very remote - our dream place, backing up to the
National Forest, with a ¼ mile Creek frontage. We are in a
camper right now planning to build a passive solar home and use a
solar array. It is fun starting over from scratch, but tough,
rough living right now. We could always use help. We ask that you
pick up one barn chore and one household chore (of my choice - we
try to match your likes, but sometimes things just need to be
done) and then help two - four hours a day. Right now we have
tents and big air mattresses to offer. Later this year we will
add onto the camper to create a bunkhouse. It is rough living.

weeks, and if we all click, then a longer stay would be great.

WE NEED HELP with our one-acre garden at 4,000' on a very remote
ridge above the Carmel Valley on the central coast. Our property
borders the Ventana Wilderness Area. We grow exclusively for the

and windy dirt road. We are 100% solar powered, including the
well, swimming pool and all residences. We grow a salad mix,
tomatoes, eggplant, hot and sweet peppers, garlic, strawberries,
with many tree fruits and have a gorgeous glass greenhouse for
propagation. We are on the way to becoming a retreat and teaching
center and some work prepares for this. For now, work is mainly
in the garden, harvesting and bed and building maintenance. Some

VOLUNTEERS needed in the harsh, beautiful southeastern California
Mojave Desert, 2,200 feet elevation, midway between Los Angeles
and Las Vegas. This is a beginning organic produce ranch. My
goals are to develop a sustainable, self-sufficient, vegetarian,
spiritual, permaculture community where we provide most of our
own food, energy, health care, shelter and income, and trade with
others. Suggested length of stay for volunteers: whatever makes
you happy. Longer is better as I expect to invest a lot of
initial training. But stay however long as it works for both of
us. March would be ideal so you can gradually build up tolerance
for increasing heat. But other months are OK. If you have a
camper, trailer, or motor home, drive that over and live in it. I
can provide hook ups for water, sewer, and electricity. I have
three travel trailers for interns. You may use internet, washing

Lynne Macco and Tim Mount knew the job they were looking for when
they subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette in 2006. Tim spent some
time sailing along coastal Maine and on one of his trips stopped
at Seguin Island, about 2½ miles offshore, near the mouth
of the Kennebec River.   The island is known for its lighthouse,
the only operating 1st order Fresnel lens north of Virginia, and
for the panoramic 360 degree views of the area. He went ashore
and met that year’s caretakers who stay on the island from
Memorial Day to Labor Day. He learned that the caretaker position
was advertised in the Gazette and that’s how the caretakers
got it.  
Although they weren’t ready to take the summer off, Lynne
and Tim subscribed in 2006 and began fantasizing about the
worldwide opportunities advertised. Then in the spring of 2007,
the ad for the Seguin caretaker position was posted in the
Gazette for the 2008 season and they responded.
The Friends of Seguin were looking for a compatible couple with
some boating experience, who would be willing and able to
maintain the grounds and buildings, perform repairs and show
visitors around the lighthouse. In addition, the caretakers were
required to make a presentation at the organization’s
annual meeting during the summer. The light and foghorn are
maintained by the Coast Guard.
Tim is a college professor and choral conductor and Lynne is a
physician and acupuncturist. Tim grew up on a farm and had lots
of outdoor experience and Lynne spent time restoring old houses
and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Newlyweds and avid
sailors, they spent a month cruising on their sailboat -- a 32
foot catamaran -- and found it was a good test of their ability
to get along in close quarters.  They both have their
captain’s licenses.
After the application and interview process with the Friends of
Seguin, the not-for-profit organization that took over Seguin
Island in 1986, they were selected as caretakers for 2008. They
downsized and packed up their remaining possessions into a
storage container. Lynne doesn’t miss her hectic commute to
Manhattan where she worked in a busy medical practice. She loves
to knit and cook on the island, including pies made from freshly
picked berries.  
When they arrived in Bath, ME for their journey to Seguin, they
quickly learned one of the most important things about island
living: you may not get to travel as planned.  While the weather
was beautiful, high seas made the journey in a boat laden with
gear unsafe and the start date was pushed back two days. So
instead of arriving on a weekend, when there would be volunteers
available to help get their belongings up the 136 foot climb to
the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, they were assisted by
their boat captain and last year’s caretaker, who had gone
out to the island to open the house before their arrival, and
start the “donkey engine” which powers the only
working tram in Maine since the late 1890’s.
Their initial duties included a lot of mowing. There are five
breathtaking and varied hiking trails on the island, which need
clearing and the grass around all the buildings needs to be cut.
The Friends of Seguin have a wish list of projects they would
like to see accomplished but give the caretakers discretion to
use their creativity. Tim decided to conquer some big projects on
the lighthouse tower itself. The 53 foot tall granite tower,
built in 1857, had sustained major damage to the entrance doors
and an upper window in a storm in 2007 and these had been boarded
up since then. They repaired them and now visitors can enter the
tower through the main entrance. Tasks abound. Although the
island is offshore, it is actually on the grid because an
electric cable runs under the water to the island. The water for
washing comes from a well downhill from the house and cisterns in
the house need to be kept full. The composting toilets need to be
maintained. The well water is not used for drinking and potable
water is brought to the island each week when they go ashore to
shop and run errands. There is always something that needs to be
replaced, repaired, or painted. 
Some families who visit the island have had an annual picnic atop
the hill for decades and return with new generations of children.
Sailboat cruisers like to tuck into the cove and pick up a
mooring for the night. The cove composting outhouse, maintained
by Lynne and Tim, is known as the finest on the Maine coast.
Everyone wants to know if the ghost stories that circulate about
Seguin are true.  
There is plenty of time to stop and enjoy the island, one of the
most beautiful spots on the planet:  hiking, picking the
bountiful berries, bird watching, boat watching, knitting,
baking, reading, and writing. Friends of Seguin limits their
caretakers to only one season. Thus Lynne and Tim continue to
peruse every issue and email updates of The Caretaker Gazette for
that next caretaking opportunity, wherever it may be.  They will
be taking early retirement in January 2009.

living on a converted whaling ship that is over one hundred years
old. It is now a beautifully restored and maintained antique

River in a jungle. Here at the resort there is golf, a swimming
