ARGENTINA

VOLUNTEER needed in San Ignacio, Misiones province. I built this
little paradise in a really very beautiful, tourist destination
not only because of its important Jesuits ruins,  but  also  for 
the  breathtaking  virgin nature in this green northern Argentina
province. San Ignacio is a rather small village and we are very
patient, calm and friendly persons so surely staying with us
should be very relaxing for you. We warmly welcome volunteers
(also with their child) basically to have fresh air from outside
these backwoods - in addition I love good lively company and also
need some little help in our hotel/bungalows Pragamisiones. Since
this occupation is a mainly Female matter - I look for just one
skilled Lady (better if not vegetarian) and of course it’s
up to you when you arrive or how long you decide to stay here,
take it as a kind of working vacation-ecotourism. Please, a
minimum stay of two weeks or longer is required. I wake up at
about seven and prepare the rich breakfast for our clients, clean
the bungalows, wash, cook, shop, arrange reservations, talk with
tourists and so on. My local collaborators help me a lot so if
you dear Volunteer want to join our compact team and give us a
hand during your mornings (six days a week) - thank you in
advance while in the afternoons you will have enough time to
explore beautiful national parks around Iguazu Falls and doing
what you desire in this natural Eden. You will have your own
bathroom and nice room with everything inside. My house is at
your disposal and hope you will also appreciate my international

ARKANSAS

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED as Campground Hosts at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
from April 1 to October 30, 2012. Volunteers will need their own
RV and will have to greet visitors, provide information and
assistance to visitors about the area, self deposit guidelines
and self deposit vaults, surveillance of facilities and
equipment, and notification of the proper authorities in case of
emergency. Some light maintenance will be required, such as
cleaning restrooms, picking up litter, cleaning grills and fire
rings, and cleaning camping sites. In exchange for their
services, park hosts are provided an RV site with water, sewage,
and 50 amp electric service. The host site must be kept clean and

Hi there, I am on a Caretaker Gazette assignment right now in
Grenada. After many years of subscribing we are so thrilled to be
finally living our dream and the Caretaker Gazette made that

My wife and I responded to an ad for a position in Costa Rica
that ran in your Gazette last year. We weren't selected for the
position at the time and we weren't in the right place work and
life wise that we were ready to pursue something else. As luck
would have it the landowner of the Costa Rica property emailed to
tell us that the caretakers he had lined up for the position
didn't work out so he wanted to know if we were still interested.
We were offered the position! We're about to embark on a new

situation is not unusual - sometimes, for various reasons, things
do not work out with the first applicants selected so the
property owner will return to the applicant pool to find the

AUSTRALIA

CARETAKER/GARDENER needed. We are looking for an energetic and
reliable person or couple for a full-time, live-in caretaker
position in East Gippsland, located between Bairnsdale and Lakes
Entrance. Duties include the maintenance of a private residence,
pool and gardens. Would ideally suit applicants who are fit and
healthy, interested in gardening, have sound handyman skills and
are able to complete duties unsupervised but work within a team
environment. Some evening and weekend work may be required. A

LIVE-IN CARETAKER needed at BIG4 Broulee Beach Holiday Park in
New South Wales. We are looking for live-in caretakers to join
our team, located on the south coast of NSW. The duties will
include, but not limited to: cleaning of on-site cabins and
amenities, general gardening and mowing lawns, minor cabin
maintenance, maintaining swimming pool, office work, and rostered

with the stockmen during sales. Livestock handling experience

required for a long-term position at a family property in the
Oberon, NSW area. Duties include all housekeeping duties
including cleaning, washing, ironing and very occasional snack
preparation. The couple must include a keen gardener to look
after parklands as well as supply firewood for the homestead.
Other yard duties include lawn maintenance, planting, weeding,
pruning, fertilizing, maintenance of irrigation system and tree
propagation. General maintenance of machinery, vehicles and tools
would also be required. The couple must be experienced and
energetic, and able to work with minimal supervision to a high
standard. Good communication skills are a must as well as current

HOUSE/PET-SITTER needed in Wondecla, from 12/19/2011 until
1/7/2012. We have two dogs, and they are house dogs, but we have
a big yard and they love to be outside as well. They have a walk
in the afternoon, not strictly structured i.e. we walk around the
back paddock so they can explore. We prefer them to sleep inside
at night, no problem as they are house trained. Not really fussy
eaters, and, love a bone (good as bribery when we go out). We
have small acreage backing onto a permanent creek. The house is
three bedrooms, with a verandah overlooking the property. We
don't have a pool, but there is a water hole for swimming in the
Wild River Park at Herberton. We are centrally located near The
Tablelands waterfalls, an easy drive from Lake Tinaroo, and about
80 klms from Innisfail down the Kennedy Highway. Really the only
specific task would be to look after our dogs, as our place is
pretty well self sufficient. The only other thing would be to

HOUSE SWAP WANTED. We would like to exchange our Australian home
for one in England for a few months. Swap your home or canal boat
in southern England for our bungalow in Bowen, Queensland
Australia. We went to the UK about 15 years ago and didn't get to
anywhere near what we wanted. We want to travel all over the UK
and Ireland and possibly France. We think about three months
would suit us. We would also like to spend some time in a canal
boat if possible. I am a retired marine engineer and my wife is a
retired nurse so someone willing to swap a canal boat for three
months for a house in Australia would be our first preference.
Our house is what is known as a bungalow and is built of masonry
brick and very comfortable. We have, of course, TV and internet
access. Bowen is a small town (9,000 population) on the coast
between Mackay and Townsville. We have a car for the use of a
"home swapper" and two dogs. They live very close to us
and are terribly spoilt. Bowen is close to the Whitsunday islands
and although no services operate from here (I have no idea why
not!) services are available from Airlie Beach which is a 40
minute drive from here. I have a 50 foot yacht which could be
made available to the right person. The climate is tropical and
the rainfall for the time of year we are looking at is very low
as our rainy season doesn't start until about Christmas. Our
requirements are not cast in granite and we would be open to
minor modifications if they suited everybody. If you are

EXPERIENCE TROPICAL SUSTAINABLE Living. No experience necessary.

BULGARIA 

PET-SITTER NEEDED in rural Bulgaria starting in May 2012. This is
a highly unusual property caretaker position, with pets to care
for too. I have a lovely acre in Bulgaria, with a comfortable
caravan, a kitchen, courtyard and a shower room. I live in a very
quiet rural area, with no night life. I need an imaginative and
responsible person to live here while I am away working from time
to time. No smokers taken. Must have references. Help with travel
costs can be included if handyman - or handy-woman - jobs are
undertaken. Basic duties are dog and cat care, watering and
weeding - no more than three hours work per day. You are welcome

CALIFORNIA

FULL-TIME CARETAKER / RANCH MAINTENANCE Position available on a
large Northern California horse property. We are looking for an
honest and responsible individual who has experience performing
various ranch projects such as building and fence maintenance,
landscaping, mowing, wood cutting, etc. – a “jack of
all trades”. Experience operating and maintaining equipment
(tractors, dozers, and diesel engines) is a huge plus. No smoking

long term guests for one of my mountain cottages in the bottom of
a canyon located four miles from I-80 and one hour east of

Siskiyou County in Hornbrook, CA. Willing to provide free parking
and rent for your RV in exchange for part-time and easy caretaker
duties on my ranch, keeping trespassers away. This is
off-the-grid, primitive living. Must be self-sustaining and love
the outdoors. Must have good references and be in reasonable
physical shape and condition, and have a good attitude, as the
property is somewhat remote. No criminal history, drugs,

four story, four building Strata complex in Surrey requires a
full-time, live-in mature couple as Resident Managers commencing
immediately. This is a two person position looking after the
office, administrative work and general maintenance of the four
buildings. The applicants should be experienced in building
maintenance, carpentry, painting, hot water heating boilers,
WHMIS, fire and safety code, electrical and mechanical systems,

responsible, mature couple for a live-in, full-time building
manager position (preferred age 40 plus) for a 216 unit large
apartment style condo complex with recreation centre, located in
the Lakeview area of Saskatoon. A green thumb regarding
landscaping, plants and flowers and handyman capabilities will be

HOUSESITTER/PET-SITTER NEEDED outside of Denver. A single person
or couple is wanted to look after nine sheep, six chickens, one
cat, and two dogs over the Christmas period. We will be gone from
December 15, 2011 until January 4, 2012. You can stay rent-free,
with all utilities paid, in a small cozy, centrally heated home
at our isolated farm, about 20 miles southwest of Denver. All of
the animal feed will be left here for you to feed our animals.

CARETAKER/HANDYMAN needed to manage a small Southern Colorado
mountain top ranch from May 15 to November 15 each year, starting

HOUSESITTER(S) NEEDED in southeastern Colorado for about six
weeks from the last days of November 2011 until early January
2012. This is NOT a paid position. First time housesitters are
OK. You just ought to love animals and be happy to spend time in
their company. I am sorry, but I am NOT set up for your own
animals nor young children. I need a couple or a single person
(non-smokers) to care for my property and animals ... horses,
goats, dog, cats and an assortment of birds. There are easy
chores here: feed and water and release animals in the morning
(about 20 minutes) and then pen and feed in the evening (15
minutes). The longest "chore" will be walking the dogs
twice a day - there is a mile track next to the house - we would
like to think that this would be fun to do for yourself also.
Accommodation will be the master bedroom, with attached bathroom.
The house has a den, lounge, and kitchen with an attached dining
room patio (recently added). Clean and tidy. The home has TV,
DVD, video, wireless internet, sewing machine, and fax. Gas
heating. We are located actually in the town of Ordway, CO on
seven acres (equivalent to two town blocks). The town is
1½ hours from Colorado Springs. Use of a car is possible;
several bicycles available also. You can also walk to the
excellent community library and into town. Our rural, farming
community population is 2,000. There are a couple of lakes really
handy; beautiful at this time of year for a wander. The area has
an early trading settlement to visit, the Arkansas River close

WE ARE SEEKING A VOLUNTEER to help at a small hotel in Orosi,

In December the city gets busy with people preparing for
Christmas. In this time of the year many families struggle to
make ends meet and need to reach out for support of any kind. The
Red Cross organizes food donations and we will assist them during
this busy time. The tasks will be to prepare the warehouse for
the food-donation-station, put food packages together, organize
and classify the food in stock, give the food to the people among
other related tasks. Volunteers will also join the festive
atmosphere during some days by handing out hot chocolate in the
city centre as a way of fundraising for non-for-profit projects.
We will help in the preparation by putting up the chocolate
stations, decorating the tables, making the chocolate and taking

	The ad in The Caretaker Gazette was short and sweet:
Winter caretaker needed in New Mexico for 200+ acres of quiet
country living. Off-grid/remote living experience a must. No
salary.
	At that moment, I was sitting at a desk in an office in the
heart of mid-Atlantic sprawl, halfway through a summer writing
internship at EARTH Magazine, and I couldn’t resist sending
an email. Two days later, after a flurry of phone conversations
with Judy, an artist who didn’t own a digital camera, but
who assured me her place was something special, I found myself
saying, “Yes, I’ll see you in October!”
	I had never been to New Mexico, but I had heard great things and
the West was calling me back. Before moving east to earn a
master’s degree in science writing from Johns Hopkins
University, I had been living in Oregon, housesitting a remote
off grid cabin in the Coast Range and I was eager to return to
rural, rent-free life.
	I finished my masters and my internship (and turned down a
staff-writing position), packed my car and my Border Collie mix
Bowie and headed to New Mexico via Savannah, Georgia and New
Orleans. Upon my arrival in Cerrillos, I was not disappointed.
Judy's place turned out to be a stunningly beautiful off-grid
solar-powered Earthship surrounded by thousands of acres of
wide-open land. It was love at first sight.
	Three years later, I still can't believe my good fortune. More
than a hundred people applied for the Earthship caretaking job,
but Judy says she just had a good feeling about me, as I did
about her, and we both consider ourselves lucky to have found one
another. So far, I have spent two winters in the Earthship, from
October to April, while Judy and her husband Tom relax poolside
in Florida, near their kids and grandkids.
	This spring, after Tom and Judy returned from Florida, I decided
I wanted to stay in New Mexico, so I spread the word through the
local community that I was looking for a summer gig. Within a few
days, I got one. I'm now caretaking another place in Cerrillos,
exchanging gardening and dog sitting for rent-free living at the
Garden of the Gods, a geologic wonder surrounded by towering fins
of red, white and pink sandstone. As a former geology major, avid
climber and lifelong rock hound, I'm in heaven.
	Caretaking is such a sweet gig, but it's not for everybody. You
have to be extremely flexible and mobile – I move every
four to six months, on average, often all the way across the
country – and have some way to make outside income, no
matter where you are.
	The nomadic lifestyle suits me perfectly: Everything I own,
including my two Border Collie mixes Bowie and Dio, fits in my
car and I've fine-tuned the art of feeling at home no matter
where I am in the world. Caretaking has also been an important
secret of my success as a writer: I couldn't make a living
freelancing if I had to pay rent every month (conversely, I also
couldn't be a professional housesitter if I didn't have the
flexibility of freelancing from anywhere). Whenever I apply for a
caretaking job, I send along a few clips of my work and
I’ve found a lot of really wonderful people who are eager
to support the arts by offering me their place to stay,
rent-free.
	In the past six years, my caretaking side-career has also landed
me on a horse ranch elsewhere in New Mexico, an empty mansion
overlooking Montana's Bitterroot Valley, a one-room dune shack on
Cape Cod National Seashore and a 200-year-old Cape on the coast
of Maine. In between gigs I hit the back roads and hiking trails
that crisscross this great country; I’ve been to 49 states,
with only Alaska yet to go. 
	Along the way I have written dozens of stories about the places
I’ve lived and visited, many of which have been published
in places like EARTH Magazine’s Travels in Geology column,
Smithsonian, High Country News and the anthologies Best
Women’s Travel Writing 2010 and Best Travel Writing 2011.

I have seen a lot of this country in the past six years and I
hope my vagabonding, road tripping and outdoor adventure stories
on will inspire people to get out and see more of the world.
I’m often asked when I'm going to settle down. Hopefully,
never! I love being a nomad! Sure, it has its drawbacks –
some days I do feel adrift – but caretaking has taken me
all over the country and I've seen and experienced a lot of the

are looking for a responsible animal loving couple or individual
to look after our home, property, and our family of five standard
poodles, beginning in mid-December 2011, or possibly in
mid-November 2011, and running for one year. We are located in a
rural area, surrounded by water and mountains, and lots of hiking
trails. The position involves the ongoing care of our dogs, the
upkeep of the house, and some yard and small maintenance in
exchange for a guest room and two available bathrooms, as well as
around 3,000 square feet of house and paid utilities. The dogs
are well trained, smart, (they should be doing the dishes!) and
love human company. They range in age from one at 10 and a half,
and the rest four and five years old. Their exercise routine
involves running and playing together on the property and playing
with humans, fetching etc. These dogs are definite characters and
love to hang out around the house and property with you. They
sleep in the house, on their bed or yours, only if you choose
that! We do the grooming and keep them very short. Poodles don't
shed which is great. The property is around six acres, has a
pond, is fenced, and is mowed once or twice a year by us, or
another individual. A close friend who is a vet tech comes
regularly to help with and one horse and one mini, and the
housesitter would sometimes be asked to help turn out or feed the
horses. There is a pool which is shut down in the winter, but
come Spring does need some simple maintenance such as cleaning
out leaves etc. There is a company who does any major work on the
pool. The position is for one year, and we would be returning
several times within that period, however there is a separate
part of the house where we stay, and there is lots of privacy.
Unfortunately this is not a situation that is suitable for a
family or an individual with children. In addition, the house/pet
sitter cannot bring a dog or cat with them, and must be

I began pet and housesitting in Syracuse, New York seven years
ago. I am 62, a non-smoker, quiet, and provide a peaceful
presence. Since 2010 I've traveled across the country to sits
from Austin and Canyon Lake, Texas to Maryland, Massachusetts and
