LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, we have completed all our arrangements to spend a month
housesitting in Costa Rica! We read about the opportunity in your
Gazette and quickly contacted the people who ran the Gazette ad.
Everything fell into place so quickly! And as you can imagine we
are very excited! I think it's been a couple of years since we
became Gazette subscribers. We've been interested in so many of
the opportunities and locations but this is the first time we're
actually going to do it as we've just retired and still active
and in good health. The timing is just right. Thank you for your
publication! I see a lot of great possibilities ahead for the
future after we finish our first month housesitting. I plan to
bring along some old Gazettes to share with other travelers and
retirees looking to live and travel on a shoestring. Mark and
Rita T., Oakland, CA

Hi Mark and Rita, thanks for your great letter. I enjoyed
reading about your success with the Gazette and your plans for
the future. Please keep in touch and let us know about your new
housesitting experience.

I wanted to let you know that I already received several
different offers from the Situations-Wanted ad I placed in the
Gazette. I think you have a very effective publication. I haven't
found a position that is the exact fit I was looking for but I am
sure there will be one that's a perfect match soon! There are so
many possibilities and I'm excited to see what comes next. Thank
you! Chris J., Tampa, FL

Hi Chris, we have thousands of property owners who subscribe
in order to find new caretakers or housesitters in our
Situations-Wanted section. I hope you decide to take one of the
offers you have received.

Dear Gary, long-time subscriber here. You have a great newsletter
and I enjoy reading and saving every issue. I've been a
subscriber to your print issues but I actually found my last
position right from one of your email broadcasts. I don't have a
computer and work strictly from my mobile so I can access your
updates. I am so glad I set this up because I ended up taking a
caretaker's job that came in through your email broadcast
service! Danielle M., Long Island City, NY

Hi Danielle, thanks for your message! I'm glad you are able to
access our email updates from your mobile device. Our email
broadcasts are available to any subscriber with a valid email
address. Our subscribers who spend a lot of time on the road,
world travelers, and nomads, appreciate the ability to receive
and access our new listings in addition to our issues from almost
anywhere in the world. The broadcasts are not just for property
owners - subscribers who are seeking positions may place a
Situations Wanted email broadcast too. If you ever want to place
your own ad, go to www.caretaker.org and click on Advertise and
fill out your ad and payment there.

Dear, Gary, please renew my subscription so I can receive the
newest issue of The Caretaker Gazette. I've always received such
a fantastic response to my help-wanted ads in your Gazette. The
calls and emails continue to roll in, even from old issues and
the quality and sincerity of the people who contact me has really
impressed me. It may sound like a cliché but I really have
made so many good and long lasting friends and I've been given
the best help and companionship from so many of your Gazette
subscribers. I am looking forward to doing some traveling in
Europe next spring and I plan to stay with some of your
international subscribers. While my home is empty I plan to run
another ad in the Gazette looking to do some home exchanges
during that time. Thanks very much for what you are doing and for
providing such a great service! Gen K., Tacoma, WA

Gen, thanks for your message. It's great to hear that your
caretaker-wanted ads in the Gazette continue to bring you such
great responses to help you with your property needs. Feel free
to contact us again when you're ready to do some traveling in
Europe and need to run another ad.

FREE RENT available for dog professionals (couple only) in
Encino. We are a non-profit small dog rescue in search for a

would be an exchange of a one bedroom unit on a property that
also houses the organization's office headquarters for your time
and care for our dogs. Most of our dogs are under 20 pounds and
we are not focused on one specific breed. Although you must love
dogs, you may not have your own pet as you will be required to

there. The property is clean, safe, and basic. It has

refrigerator, and plenty of outdoor space, not all of which will
be used for the dogs, air-conditioning room and plenty of

It is difficult summing up a life on just one page, I could
easily use that up just recounting my wanderings around the
Orkneys and Ireland for a summer. I suppose starting at the
beginning would be best. I was born into a military family in
Atlantic City. After moving over a dozen times I graduated from
Karlsruhe American High School, in what was then West Germany.
Returning to New Jersey I enrolled in a college for a couple
years. Coming to the conclusion I could attain the same knowledge
being offered just by reading the books, I left and took a job
manufacturing surfboards. With the bankruptcy of the company I
moved on to the building trades. Unfortunately the recession of
the early 1980's happened and construction work dried up.
No stranger to travel, I headed out west; eventually ending up
at a resort in Colorado working as a janitor. I actually found it
rather humorous since "Atlas Shrugged" was one of my favorite
books in high school, and the resort was not too far from Rand.
So I started pursuing the American Dream; starting a family,
opening a business (paint contractor), and enjoying ordinary
life. They say nothing is constant except change and I learned
that lesson when I came home from work one day and found that it
all had vanished. A little dazed and confused, I moved into the
woods in order to consider my options. Coming out a few months
later, I started to travel the country; supporting myself by
working for room and board, selling some of my crafts, and the
occasional paint job. At a concert one day it dawned on me that I
was still enrolled in school, it was just that it was a mystery
school and I wouldn't be graduating until I passed on.
About this time a former employee of mine offered me a permanent
painting position at his family's lodge. Being that it was a
summer resort and the winters are not conducive to outdoor work,
I only had to work during the spring and fall. With plenty of
time to travel and earning a decent wage, I started to do my
Spirit Walk overseas. Eventually, I started taking on more
management responsibilities at the lodge. Besides the painting
and staining of new and existing buildings, as well as the upkeep
on the family's other houses, I was training the new managers and
inspecting their departments. My business card read Painter,
Quality Control Manager, and Spiritual Advisor. I was actually
offered a place in "Who's Who in America's Executives,
Professionals, and Entrepreneurs". Unfortunately an email address
was required and I was still pretending I could ignore the
Computer Age. It was then decided the lodge where I was working
at the time could use a caretaker. I assumed the role of
caretaker. We winterized a cabin and I started staying most of
the winter. It became my favorite part of the job, even without
electricity or water. I had plenty of free time to read and do
crafts; solitude, since you had to ski or snowshoe in; and
silence, except for natural sounds. We did eventually get power
and started plowing the road when the family started developing
some of the property. This role of caretaker and the
responsibilities continued for 10 years until the owners decided
to move on and sold the property to a corporation.
I have never gone overseas for a specific job. When I travel I
normally just get a room for the first two nights at my point of
entry, talk to some of the locals and then formulate a plan (I
rarely leave from the same country I arrived in). I then check my
journal for possible positions that I had previously written down
from past issues of The Caretaker Gazette. For example, on my way
from Ireland to the Canary Islands I stayed at a farm in Portugal
and a B&B in Cadiz, Spain, both of which I had found via postings
in The Caretaker Gazette.
I still have the cabin and the painting job, but due to the new
pay scale I work during the summer for the maintenance
department. During the winter I go to Florida and help my parents
out. In my youth I always tried to take the path no one had taken
before, but now the least travelled ones are fine. The options
now include selling off some of my collections by opening an art
gallery, starting a company inspecting resorts, selling my crafts
at renaissance fairs, or becoming an itinerant painter of
Victorian houses. Another caretaking job would allow me to do all
these things or none. Now that it's time for something new, I've
been reading The Caretaker Gazette a little more closely. For me,
the newsletter has always been useful in finding temporary work
overseas that offers room and board. Now though, I'm interested
in something a little more permanent and plan to use the Gazette
to find that too, maybe even in the good old United States. The
South Pacific or Ireland would be nice too, but I'm certainly
open to something new and different. No worries, Mate; the
adventure never ends.

ITALY

WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS who have experience with artistic
wall painting! We are looking for someone who is free immediately
and can stay here for at least a week. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
consists of a sustainable approach to life in its various
aspects: energy, farming, and travelling. An essential
sustainable element to this project is work-exchange itself, as
our volunteers have the opportunity to engage with these
approaches, learn from them, and experience cultural enrichment
not only through a placement at the farm but also through contact
with guests from all over the world. A placement at the farmhouse
is ideal for volunteers who are looking for a unique work-holiday
experience in a friendly, open, and engaging atmosphere. We are
located in the countryside but are also very close to the
historical center of Perugia (1.50 euro bus ticket to town), so
it will be very easy to experience the different aspects of both
farm and city life. We offer free bikes, free internet access,
free guest kitchen with breakfast, lunch four to five days a
week, free swimming pool use, and more, including the opportunity
to contribute to the management of a working farm and a B&B. The
ideal volunteer for a placement with us is active, social,
hard-working, responsible, reliable, energetic, a good
communicator, interested in exploring the area and learning new
things. If you are a couch potato or an internet-addict, this is
not the place for you. We expect volunteers to have fun while
still being able to recognize the importance of the work to be
done. We are looking for someone who can complete the given tasks
in an efficient, independent, and timely manner, who takes pride
in their work, and who is looking to be a part of a team.
Volunteers should enjoy the work and have a positive attitude.
The general idea is to help us keep our hostel "No.1 in Perugia,"
which has been achieved very much so with the help of past and
present volunteers. To learn more, please visit
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX via our website. Thanks.

exploring the coast on your own to discover your favorite
deserted beach. People come to enjoy the beach, the hippie vibe
or to experiment an alternative way of living. This is also
popular for yoga retreat, meditation, spiritual and ancestral
healing, rituals and ceremonies. We started in January 2014 and
are still in the phase of development. Our project has very
simple goals: building an ecologic yoga, aguahara area, re-plant
and re-condition the landscape using organic methods of
permaculture, provide a sustainable source of healthy food, while
minimizing consumption of power and water to create a more
harmonious environment. We are interested in people who can
contribute with enthusiasm, skills and ideas. We are looking to
build a Superadobe and bottles house, dig a well, and also do
some landscape and organic garden work. From October 2016 to
April 2017, we are looking for mature and responsible male
volunteers with experience in natural building, Superadobe
construction or carpentry, organic agriculture, and permaculture.
A minimum stay of a week is required, with a maximum of three
weeks. We need general help for the proper functioning of the
project, working three to four hours per day (from 8am five days
a week) in exchange for breakfast, and rustic accommodation
(tent, hammock or outdoor bed with mosquito net), water, shower,
composting toilet, but still no electricity. From June to
September 2017, we are looking for a dog/housesitter only. A
minimum stay of a month is required with a two person maximum. We
need a fit and active, mature, responsible person (friends,
couple, all genders) who would enjoy the occasional opportunity
to move in and care for our property while we are away. Keep the
areas of the house clean and tidy, feed our two dogs, Chili and
Pepper, fix the way up to the land, and water the plants. There
