CARETAKER OPPORTUNITIES

ALASKA

EXPERIENCE THE COASTAL ALASKAN bush in style. Unplug from the
madness of an overcrowded world and enjoy watching bald eagles,
wild mountain goats, seals, sea lions, sea birds, and maybe even
an occasional bear (although they are very shy). Our
off-the-grid, hydro-electric powered lodge and home is looking
for volunteers to help with indoor and outdoor chores. We are
running a full-service wilderness lodge at one location and
building a seaside wharf and house at another location three
miles from the lodge. Everything is built by hand with no heavy
machinery so volunteers need to be physically fit and have some
experience with tools. At the lodge we need help with kitchen
duties, hauling and stacking firewood, gardening, cleaning,
building, painting, and renovations. We can house four volunteers
at any given time and the lodge takes no more than eight guests
at any given time so it is quiet and peaceful with opportunities
to learn new skills, work in a wilderness location where progress
is often slow but always meaningful, interact with high end
guests from around the world, and make positive lifetime
memories. All room and board is provided by the lodge and there
are no costs associated with volunteering. Volunteers eat the
same food as the lodge guests which consists of fresh Alaskan
seafood and other gourmet dishes. We ask for a six (sometimes
eight) hour work day, six days a week. Off work time can be
utilized to use the lodge kayaks, fish from the floating dock for
halibut, hike the local trails, engage in hobbies, or visit the
local town of Homer. We make our schedules as flexible as
possible so that you get the most enjoyment for your time with us
as well as participating in an Alaskan lifestyle that we have
been living for 30 and 40 years. We are a small lodge run by a
married couple and we find our enjoyment in the fun activities
that we do and the work that we accomplish. We do not drink or
take drugs and we expect the same of our volunteers. Volunteers
need to be able to make their way to Homer, Alaska (100 air miles
south of Anchorage) and, from there, will take a water taxi to
the lodge. Volunteers who stay with us for a month or more will
be refunded for their water taxi fare. Volunteers can participate
in our programs for as little as two weeks or as much as six
months. For more information see the lodge website at
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and feel free to contact us with any
questions you may have.

ARGENTINA

PERSONAL ASSISTANT NEEDED ASAP on a small horse-breeding farm in
the Andes of Northern Patagonia, Province Neuquen, for a
63-year-old woman with Multiple Sclerosis. I am an artist and an
experienced horsewoman who is beginning to ride again after
breaking my back in 2009. All my life, I have believed that
creativity is healing, as well as the power and love of nature
and her creatures, especially horses. I currently live on a small
horse farm which serves as an office for large nearby Estancias
Ranquilco and Colipilli. We are in a non-touristic part of
Patagonia, in the foothills of the Andes, in the heart of the
real gaucho (Argentine cowboy) culture. In exchange for food and
housing, you’ll be my personal assistant. Assistant duties
include: typing (internet work, like emails and Foundation work),
helping with occasional art shows, light housekeeping/cooking (to
help supplement my employed maid/cook), occasional help with the
animals (giving food to the horses or gatito), helping me get
around (putting my wheelchair in my truck/pushing me around on
occasion), occasional help with my MS challenges (e.g. exercise),
acting as a host(ess) for international volunteers and clients
for Estancia Ranquilco, making maté! (a local herbal drink
- don’t worry, we’ll teach you how!). I need you to
be “on call” when we’re together. Your private
time is respected and arranged as needed. You must be flexible on
hours and type of work. This is a work-exchange for room and
board. Minimum stay is one month. A stay of three months is
preferred. Please email your resume, a description of why you are
good for this position, your personal interests, and a photo to

ARIZONA

PERMANENT CARETAKER needed starting in September. An active,
dependable couple (will consider an individual) is needed to help
clean-living, 70ish folks with ranch chores and maintenance. We
live in a beautiful, quiet, temperate location, one mile high in
the Coronado National Forest area, outside of Safford. You can
live on the property in your own private cottage, which is a half
mile from our house. No salary provided. When we travel we need
you to take full responsibility for our animals and property. The
caretaker must have a heart for our four-legged friends. Horse
experience is desirable and a love for dogs is a must. Please
email a letter of interest on why you would be able to handle
this situation, and at least four references that we can check,
to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thank you.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

We did a two month caretaking job last year in Palmyra, New York
and absolutely loved it! Our ad was spotted by the homeowner on
one of the email updates sent out by The Caretaker Gazette. What
a fantastic experience! She invited us to do a housesit for her
in the Grand Cayman Islands for one month too! Thank you. M.V.
Strand, Western Cape, South Africa

Hi Magrietha, our Situations-Wanted section is a great way to
advertise yourself and your availability. We have thousands of
property owners who subscribe to the Gazette in order to find
qualified housesitters and property caretakers. Our subscribers
include some celebrities and prominent people who, for privacy
reasons, prefer not to advertise for help but will review our
Situations-Wanted ads. They will then have someone on their staff
contact our Situations-Wanted advertisers directly to interview
them and then follow-up with an offer to housesit or caretake
their property.

I've subscribed for two years and in all that time I saw only two
ads that clicked with me. The first one didn't work out, but the
second one did just today. I am really grateful for your service.
The price of subscription (and renewal) was the best investment
of my life. Thanks so much! Best wishes, R. Z., Seattle, WA

Thanks for your nice message, Robert. Sometimes it takes awhile
for a subscriber to find a position that is exactly what he or
she is looking for as far as type or location. We have had some
subscribers tell us that they waited years before applying for
their perfect position. I'm glad to hear that you were able to
find one that clicked with you! We appreciate your subscription
and renewal. We have heard from many subscribers over the decades
who said that their Gazette subscription was the best money they
ever spent. Please keep us updated on your experience and let us
know if you are interested in submitting a caretaker profile
about your experience that we can publish in a future Gazette
issue.

I’ve noticed that several listings in the Gazette contain
only an email address for readers to use when responding to the
ad. This is very frustrating because I don’t have a
computer, and I wouldn’t know how to respond to an email
address. Can you do anything about this? L. S. Stratton, CO

Leon, we publish only the contact information that the property
owners who place their ads in the Gazette ask us to publish. That
is why you will often see ads with only an email address provided
for applicants. Many of the landowners who advertise with us
value their privacy and do not want to be contacted by phone and
do not want their home address published. Others have told us
that they want to include an email address in their listing in
order to screen for applicants who use email since one of their
requirements is to have the caretaker send email messages to the
landowner updating them on the status of their property.
Therefore, we are unable to provide any additional contact
information to prospective applicants. I hope you understand.

Our Caretaking Philosophy

profession, and to our subscribers who have kept the Gazette
going since 1983. We publish the Gazette in order to help
property owners and caretakers find one another. We support the

simple housesitting assignments, where one can live rent-free, to
full-time estate management positions that include salary,
benefits and housing.

ARKANSAS

LAND PARTNER WANTED: This is a high quality/low cost living
situation. Is your heart alive, to beauty? Do you passionately
yearn to live in a really beautiful, quiet, bucolic place? Are
you an artist or writer who needs a lot of space and wants a lot
of time? Are you a mature but physically vigorous man or
exceptionally strong and skilled woman between the ages of 45 to
62, who relishes outdoor life? Are you keenly interested in
gardening? Basically, I am offering a wonderful living situation
(and partnership, not a job) in a large, old farmhouse and the
use of a hermitage cabin with great natural light, both furnished
and in good condition. The physical setting is an old 140 acre
farm of mixed pastures and woods, bottomlands and uplands. Would
you be happy to be part of the solution, in terms of land
management/climate change issues - engaged in a program that
seeks to create a luxuriant vegetative mantle and avoid
compaction, bare soil, and erosion? The farm is in the middle of
a five mile long creek valley where almost all the properties are
over 300 acres, located 50 miles east of the college town
Fayetteville, and 15 miles from the trailheads of the Buffalo
River with great hiking, riding, and canoeing. Please do not ever
try to visit this place without prior arrangement. Because I have
no computer or phone in my personal house, we need to make
initial contact through postal mail. Please write a statement
about your goals, needs, interests, skills, rural experience,
etc. and mail to: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

CARETAKER NEEDED to live in my precious, darling A frame cabin in
the Ozark Wilderness in Northwest Arkansas from August 15, 2012 -
March 15, 2013. It is perfect for a single caretaker needing a
creative, scholarly or healing retreat. Must be someone who loves
cats; I just have one indoor cat. I need someone who likes quiet
and privacy in a wilderness setting, and who is not afraid of
Mother Nature. The small house is behind six creek crossings; so
there is the need for a certain level of fitness to be able to
leave your truck up the mountain and hike up and down for
possibly several weeks at a time. I would like the caretaker to
pay $250/month for utilities, including, electricity, propane and
phone. There are two scenarios that would work: 1) the caretaker
could be handy with finish carpentry and able to gather their own
firewood, or 2) the caretaker could afford to pay Cody another
small amount/month to do yard work, cut wood and finish the
things that need finishing, i.e., wood stove installation. Cody
is a local young man, very competent, who has lots of work and
does not want to live at my house nor does he like cats. He could
come over once a week and help you with whatever needs doing and
be on call for you in emergencies. Please email your letter of
interest and references to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

APARTMENT MANAGER/CARETAKER needed in multiple locations. We have
positions at apartment complexes located in Hope, Conway, Cabot,
Searcy and 40 other locations throughout the state of Arkansas.
Experienced preferred, but we will train the right person. The
position is ideal for a couple. You will be required to live on
site. We are an equal opportunity provider and employer. To
apply, please mail your resumes and inquires to

quinoa and millet using permaculture designs. We are especially
using Geoff and Nadia Lawton's "Greening The Desert"
concepts. For the past three years we have been creating our
compost to use this year. We are seeking one or two volunteers
who can stay at least a month at a time (hopefully longer). We
prefer people who can stay a minimum of eight weeks. People with
building abilities to finish the greenhouse would be very
welcome. Helpers would be asked to carry out morning chores (feed
and water the horses, goats or sheep, and chickens), along with
other farm chores when needed. They would also help with planting
seeds, plants and trees, as well as composting and watering them.
We plan to make home-made egg noodles from the eggs and will be
making cheese and yogurt this summer. We do not slaughter any
animals for food (or for any other reason). Our ultimate goal is
to be as self-sufficient as possible. All volunteer work will not
amount to more than three hours per day, leaving volunteers time
to explore this wonderful community. In return, helpers will
receive accommodations but must provide and prepare their own
food. Volunteers will stay in a lovely retreat cabin or in a
trailer - both with a gorgeous view of the mountains. All
volunteers must have their own transportation (car, truck,
motorcycle or bicycle). Sorry, but we cannot accept children or
pets. No alcohol or drugs may be used on our property. We have
many other on-going and compassionate projects involving Buddhist
teachings, healing, music and film, as well as collaboration with
Native American leaders, which volunteers may find interesting.
Buddhists do not do "missionary work;" we do not try to
convert others. If volunteers wish to learn more about our
teachings and meditation while here, they can, but it is not
necessary. There are many spiritual centers of various religious
traditions here, along with world-class hiking, climbing
(Penitente Canyon is across the Valley); white water rafting and
hot springs. We want to express our gratefulness in advance to
all those kind enough to help us with our good endeavors. Those
interested in contacting us and viewing pictures can see some on
our website at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

COSTA RICA

WE ARE LOOKING FOR AN ENERGETIC AND OUTGOING person with previous
experience of living in a community to take over the role of Head
Gardener and Volunteer Coordinator, who can commit to at least
six months. This is an organic chocolate farm run by a local Tico
family in one of the most amazing places in Costa Rica. Nestled
in the secluded village of Mastatal, near Santiago de Puriscal,
the farm sits at about 1,000 meters above sea level in the lush
and rugged tropical environment that is ideal for cocoa
cultivation. We have been producing organic cocoa for over 25
years. Our farm is within walking distance of the La Cangreja
National Park, Zapaton Indigenous Reserve, and many beautiful
waterfalls and river swimming holes. The area is as rich in flora
and fauna as the Osa Peninsula, including many endemic species,
even the Scarlet Macaws. The work of the farm fluctuates with the
weather. Although all stages of cocoa production, from cocoa
harvesting to making the chocolate products is the main
concentration here, this is a fully functioning farm. The farm
includes an organic/medicinal garden, bean fields, a small banana
plantation, cows, horses and chickens. The main cocoa harvest
takes place during the rainy season (roughly May - November) and
the expansion of the organic terraced gardens, bean harvesting,
and various other farm work takes place during the hot, dry
summer season (roughly December - April). Volunteers are asked to
pay $9 a day for food and accommodation, which includes three
substantial meals a day (with fresh fruits and vegetables from
the garden/farm), and sleeping in either the dorm room or tree
houses. This is in exchange for five hours work in the mornings.
The work varies day to day, however help is always needed in the
kitchen and garden and you will have the opportunity to help with
all stages of the chocolate making process, including roasting,
shelling and grinding the cocoa and making the final chocolates.

ECUADOR

EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEERS needed for the
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We look for enthusiastic fellows who
would like to help us and learn about building a round shaped
sustainable cob and bamboo house, as well as organic farming,
cheese and bread making. We will start an organic vegetable
garden while working on the house. We have a flat for helpers to
stay, with a bathroom and kitchen and Wi-Fi. We offer
accommodation and lunch, but the helper should provide their own
breakfast and dinner. We expect people to work at least six hours
per day; you will be working with local workers, which is a good
way to learn Spanish, and can get you in contact with the
neighbors. We can also organize Spanish classes and excursions,
especially to the jungle, and shamanic ceremonies. We are an
Italian couple, Cecilia and Francesco, with a two-year-old son,
who first came to Ecuador in 2006. We have lived in this
beautiful country for over five years now. Cecilia is a
sociologist with a Master’s degree in Gender Studies while
Francesco has a PhD in Physics. We worked on international
cooperation and environmental research and now we started this
beautiful project of building a house for us made of cob and
bamboo. We fell in love with nature, the jungle, spirits and the
culture of Ecuador and its people, its sunsets, its climate, its
power, and we felt that here we could make our dream of living in
a self-sustainable way with real caring for the earth and our
lives. A few months ago we bought a plot of land on the slopes of
the volcano Ilal in the valley of Tumbaco, a half hour from the
city of Quito. It is a beautiful place, still quite rural but
close to everything you need. The land has approximately 3,000mq
and has a nice view of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and the
volcano of Quito, Pichincha. Here we will build our house,
capturing rainwater, recycling water from sinks, using composting
toilets, and in the future we hope to take energy from the sun.

CARETAKER PROFILE
“Retirement, a whole new adventure - Gary and Candy
Spaid”
Dates of Birth: Gary - April 14, 1951; Candy - March 3, 1952
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Candy is an avid gardener and has raised vegetables,
flowers, and ground cover. She skis, snowshoes, hikes, horseback
rides, and does needlework. Gary enjoys photography, gourmet
cooking, scuba diving, skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, and
hiking.
Quote: “Nobody can really guarantee the future. The best we
can do is size up the chances, calculate the risks involved,
estimate our ability to deal with them and make our plan with
confidence.” Henry Ford II

Candy and Gary Spaid

Gary and Candy spent most of their vacation time and their money
traveling the world during their working life. Gary decided to
sell his registered investment adviser business and retire in
2010. The couple got the idea to have a career as property
caretakers from The Caretaker Gazette which they had subscribed
to for several years before retiring. They want to see the world
before old age embraces them.
Before retirement, the longest trip they could take was three
weeks. Now they accept assignments up to three months. They
explain, “It is so much more fun to immerse yourself in the
country by shopping locally, eating the local food, and learning
how to communicate when your foreign language skills are
limited.” (Tip: Be sure to check how long you may stay in a
country before you take the job).
Their present assignment is taking care of two cats (Bela and
Sassy) in Bangkok, Thailand in the Silom district. Everything
they could possible need is within walking distance. The street
food is so good there is no need to cook. Gary's bread pan (which
he carries around the world) will stay in storage in the luggage
until they get to New Zealand, their next assignment.
People typically ask Candy and Gary how they can live out of two
suitcases. They reply, “It's actually very easy. One
suitcase is for winter clothes and the other is for summer. The
Czech Republic assignment was below freezing and Bangkok is in
the 90's.” They carry only two pairs of shoes: hiking boots
and walking shoes. In order to simplify their life, Gary and
Candy sold their six bedroom McMansion and have no regrets. They
say, “Sure, we miss our wine cellar, movie theater, and
gourmet kitchen, but our life is so much richer now that we are
caretakers. As our quote infers, each day has its challenges but
that is what makes life interesting.”
Here is their hint for responding to Caretaker Gazette requests:
Be brutally honest on what you can do. Gary and Candy admit,
“While we can take care of most horses, we have no
experience with draft animals. Also, Gary is too old for
thoroughbreds.” Stating that upfront saves both sides a lot
of time, “We accepted an assignment in New Zealand for a
place that runs on solar. We admitted we have no experience with
solar. The owner knew we usually arrive a few days early to learn
the ropes and said he would teach us everything we needed to
know.”
They try to respond to assignments that take them heading east
around the world. However, they have backtracked many times and
never regretted seeing areas that were not on their list. For
Gary and Candy, it's all about being flexible. For example, they
backtracked to Lugano, Switzerland to care for a dog and two cats
for two weeks, “We really did not know much about the area
and were delighted to take the dog on numerous hikes and do
general sightseeing. As we are avid Geocachers, we found many
hidden treasures in the Lugano area.”
They use the internet extensively to keep up with their next
assignments. They also book all travel arrangements online. Both
Skype and their Skype phone number have really helped their
nomadic lifestyle. Prospective employers and family can easily
stay in touch. They have only had one caretaking assignment that
was cancelled. A German family had to reschedule their vacation
due to problems at work. Fortunately, the Spaids were able to
stay in an off-season ski chalet for a really low price.
Transportation is their biggest hurdle. Gary doesn't like driving
a car, (especially on the left side of the road), so driving on
foreign roads is something they try to avoid. That means taking
local transportation. They research public transportation options
and obtain information from the locals. They carry a lap-top with
them everywhere they go which is an invaluable tool.
They are not party-goers. They copied all of their DVDs to a
removable hard drive and watch a movie each night, “That is
important if all of the TV stations are in an incomprehensible
language. TV is not a big draw for us. We prefer more intelligent
choices. We also listen to books on the computer. I sew while
Gary cooks. It's a great arrangement.”
What's next for the Spaids? “Our job after New Zealand and
Australia ends at the end of August. We will be scouring The
Caretaker Gazette for other short term jobs in Australia until
our 90 days are up. Our best guess is that we will be in South
America from December until April as we have not done much
traveling there and we are really looking forward to those
countries and improving our Spanish. After that, who knows? Most
folks do not like to kennel their pets so we will always have
places to live. We may end up back in the U.S. in a year to see
the states we haven't visited yet or stay in the states that we
love.”

ICELAND

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to work at a farm in the South of Iceland, at
the feet of the mighty and famous Eyjafjallajökull, which
last erupted in 2010. Our tasks will mainly be focused on
improving the environment in and preparing the place for the
winter. We will assist in cleaning up the area, clearing old
fences and replacing them, painting and preparing the farm for
winter in various ways. Volunteers will be able to assist in
regular farm work such as milking, riding and collecting hay. We
will have the opportunity to live and work with an Icelandic
family, participating in the diverse tasks that they are involved
in, in their daily lives. This is a unique opportunity to get to
know and to experience first-hand how a family in the countryside
lives. The farm is big, with sheep, cows and horses, have their
own produce and we will have the opportunity to work and learn
about that. The valley of Brynjudal, where the work camp of the
first week takes place is about 80 kilometers from the capital;
deep inside Hvalfjörður. It is surrounded by mountains,
to the north of the valley is a mountain called Múlafjall,
south of the Valley are Bolafell and Suðurfjall and to the
west Þrándarstaðafjall. The valley is extremely
beautiful, with many plants and trees. There are many small
canyons, streams and waterfalls and it is a popular place for
hikers to visit. Along the valley runs the river
Brynjudalsá which starts in Sandvatn. Hvalfjörður
lies north of Reykjavík and Mosfellslbær and is the
longest fjord in the south-west of Iceland, cutting 30kms deep
into the land along a north-east/south-west axis and curling to
the east at its head. Before the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel
was opened in 1998 and the main ring-road rerouted underneath the
fjord, all traffic heading north or west to and from
Reykjavík had to follow the fjord all the way around - a
drive of an hour or two. The second week will take place in the
area of Úlfljótsvatn a 70 km drive from
Reykjavík. The area is popular among scouts and nature
lovers and it is popular for recreational fishing. The working
plan will be flexible and it will depend on the needs of our
hosts, the advance of the diverse projects in the area and of
course on the weather conditions. In this camp, volunteers will
be hosted in a farmhouse, sleeping on mattresses on the floor.
Volunteers will have to bring their own sleeping bag. The house
is a fully equipped home, with access to a kitchen, bathroom and
washing machine. We will share the different duties of cooking
and cleaning. Please visit XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished (we aim
for 2012/2013), we want to sail the world, visiting other
eco-villages, collecting knowledge and traveling in the most
eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps us out will have the
chance to join our crew. We also work on the farm, building up
the infrastructure to create a stable base for our community. We
live with our dog, the farm cat and some (very) free-range
chickens. We keep bees and make jam; this year we harvested our
first crop of potatoes and planted next seasons raspberries.
Eventually we hope to grow all our food. We want to create a
place that will continue to flourish, where crops, thoughts,
adventures, and of course boats, can grow! We ask for a minimum
commitment of thirty days, with a week-long trial period. We
welcome anyone as long as you are happy to work hard and help out
where needed. There are enough beds for eight volunteers and the
schedule is Monday to Friday, with approximately eight to nine
hours of work a day. Please bring your pets if you can! Boat work
is predominantly during the winter and jobs include welding the
deck, installing the engine, sewing the sails, constructing the
mast and fitting the interior. If you have any particular skills
in these areas, please let us know. On the farm you may be asked
to do anything from plowing and harvesting to jam making, roof
building, beekeeping, digging, painting, or grinding the barley
for our morning porridge. It is guaranteed that you will be asked
to cook; our diet is vegetarian and we try to eat only seasonal
food, grown as locally as possible. On the weekends there are
forests and mountains to explore, and we have skis, tents and
bikes available for those who want to go adventuring. Come help
us out and join our tribe of sea-gypsies! Please send an email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX explaining why you would be
interested in our community and please place this in Capital
Letters in the Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you
have been reading our description here. Thanks.

I am a 58-year-old retired teacher of 31 years. I am a Christian
woman who is very reliable, cautious, safety minded, trustworthy
and honest. I have owned my own home for over 35 years, so I know
what is involved in running and maintaining a home. I would like
to housesit so that I have an opportunity to see other parts of
the world, as well as provide peace of mind and quality service
to homeowners. Your home is your most treasured asset, and I can
assure you that I will take excellent care of it as if it was my
own home. I do have housesitting experience. For almost 40 years,
I have lived in and maintained homes over holiday breaks,
weekends, and summers. Now that I am retired, I have the
flexibility to housesit anytime, anywhere, and any length of
time. I have experience with taking care of pets. I have taken
care of horses, chickens, guineas, dogs, cats, birds, goats, and
a raccoon. If you think a couple would be more efficient, I have
a very good friend who has worked with me. We have collaborated
on some projects where the homeowner preferred a male and female.
He is a Christian man retired from the Air Force. He holds a
Bachelor's degree in Criminology and held a high security
clearance. I know I will be able to offer you peace of mind as
you vacation or take care of personal business Please call
