ALABAMA

HOUSESITTER/GARDENER needed in Helena, a suburb of Birmingham,
from September 15 to December 31, 2020. In addition to our three
bedroom/two bathroom home, we have beautiful gardens, so we are
looking for a housesitter to maintain both our house and gardens

South. Our private house, including utilities, is offered to stay
in for free in exchange for about two hours a day of taking care

would also enjoy some of our landscaping work out in our
beautiful garden area. Must be a non-smoker/drinker, with no
pets, or children. Please email your interest and reasons for

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary and staff, I’m a new subscriber and I just wanted to
take the time to extend a big “Thank You” to all of you for
being so pleasant and helpful when I called your Gazette with my
questions. It’s so great (especially in this impersonal era of
online contact) to actually reach real people on the phone. You
were so patient in answering my questions about starting a new
career as a caretaker. Thanks to all of you for your
encouragement and suggestions. I am looking forward to taking the
next steps and answering some of your interesting help wanted
ads. Teri C., New Brunswick, NJ

Teri, you are welcome! Thanks for your kind words and for
taking the time to write to us. If you have any other questions,
please feel free to give us a call again and we’ll be happy to
help you out. Best wishes to you as you begin your career as a
property caretaker.

Dear Gary, I’ve had nearly a dozen responses to the Help Wanted
ad I placed in the Gazette! As you know, it hasn’t been easy to
find the right person to caretaker our remote vacation property
and now we have several excellent, qualified people who are
interested thanks to you! I’ve responded to each and every
email with a more detailed description of our situation. Thanks
again and I’ll let you know how we’re doing. Sam B., Salt
Lake City, UT

Sam, we have some very well qualified subscribers who can
bring their expertise to your beautiful property. Many will be
very happy to help you out and would love to live on a remote
property. Thank you for taking the time to respond to all of the
applicants and thank you for checking in again and letting us
know how you and your new caretaker are doing.

Hi Mr. Dunn, I wanted to let you know that through your Gazette I
was able to find and hire a great property caretaker to replace
my last property caretaker who recently retired after ten years
here. I actually found my new caretaker through one of your
caretaker profiles! I was reading through one of my Gazette
issues from a couple of years ago and was able to contact the
caretaker. It turns out he found his last position via the
Gazette and was ready for a new challenge. Thanks, John H. Tahoe
City, CA

Hi John, I’m glad you were able to find a property caretaker
via one of our subscribers who was featured in a Caretaker
Profile! Thanks for letting us know. We’ve had other
subscribers who have been profiled in the Gazette tell us that
they received caretaker/housesitter job offers as a result of
having their story published in the Gazette. If any subscribers
are currently caretaking or housesitting they can submit their
Caretaker Profile story to us for possible publication in the
Gazette. If selected, there is no charge to have a Caretaker
Profile story published in the Gazette. We need the Title,
Contact information, Interests, Favorite quote, four photos - a
close-up of you and then a photo of you on the property you are
caretaking, and about 1,800 words for your story. If you’re
interested, we can email your Caretaker Profile story info to
you.

Gary, through your Gazette, last year we were able to exchange
our house with a homeowner outside of Rome, Italy. We had a
wonderful time and are looking for something closer to home for
this year. We answered one of your Gazette ads and one thing led
to another. Please renew our subscription now. The possibilities
are endless! Thank you, Renee and Frank M, Waco, TX

Renee and Frank, thanks for sharing your success with the
Gazette! We now have subscribers in all 50 states and over 80
countries, so there are many opportunities to live and travel
this way. It’s just a matter of making the right
connection!

work can be repetitive as general gardening tasks tend to be and
most of it is outdoors. The project starts early every weekday,
working hours are from 8:00 - 15:00, except on Friday when work
finishes at 12:00 as a part of an ongoing research into
shortening the working week. Volunteers have to be motivated to

sides. Visitors experience easily the pure energy at the heart of
Iceland’s capital, whether from the boiling thermal energy

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Finding a long-term home in Puget Sound
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: boating, hiking, essential oils
Quote: “We also learned it’s a very good idea to find out
what’s in short supply in the area you want to be and get
certifications in that area."

Sara and Jeff on a cool day on the island

We really never dreamed about being in such a great situation!
Six months ago, we were in a relatively short-term housesit in
the high desert of New Mexico. We had been applying to positions
for about four months via The Caretaker Gazette that were more in
mountainous areas. We were looking especially near Jeff’s
favorite place: Flathead Valley in Northwest Montana, in the
heart of the Rocky Mountains wild lands between the Salish
Mountains to the west, and the Whitefish, Swan and Mission
Ranges, rising to the continental divide, to the east.
At this time, Jeff saw the Gazette ad for a seasonal caretaker
for a small island in Puget Sound that really looked interesting!
We had not really considered that location, but the more we
thought about it, the more we loved it! We made it through the
first part of the interview process but then a couple who were
further along the process got the job. Although disappointed, we
just kept applying to any other caretaker job in the San Juan
Islands.
But two weeks later, the small island asked if we were still
available. We were hired and would start in about a month…and
then rumors of road closures due to the virus situation started
to spread. After getting the okay to arrive sooner, we tied up
loose ends for two days and enjoyed a 25 hour road trip!
We likely should have asked a few more questions in the hiring
process to really see what we were getting into, but it all
worked out. Since we are Harbor Masters for two docks, our house
needs to have a nice water view. We have a very nice view in a
very acceptable house. We maintain a common area that includes a
clubhouse, a shower and laundry room. Mowing the airstrip grass
is also a high priority.
We have made many friends, which has come in handy since we
don’t have a boat. Weather permitting, we can often get a small
plane ride, or a boat ride, to the mainland on our days off. Or
just use a water taxi. It all takes time though and multiple
hops.
About boats… every single person here told us not to get a
boat… except one - a person who, of course, sells boats! Very
funny! Boats, like horses and planes, are expensive, and need
lots of maintenance. We are only used to freshwater boats. But
out here, if a boat doesn’t get bottom painted it will have
barnacles in just a few weeks!
What we’ve learned about applying for a caretaker position
along the way is pretty typical:

- Persistence
- Follow your intuition
- Add value first
- Get everything in writing
- Be flexible yet have good boundaries
- Know your worth
- Avoid politics like the plague

But we also learned it’s a very good idea to find out what’s
in short supply in the area you want to be and get certifications
in that area. One thing out here in short supply are Water System
Operators. So Jeff is working on that certification.
One unexpected thing: Jeff thought this area would be rainy all
the time, like Seattle’s reputation. But it’s not at all! We
are in the rain shadow of a mountain so it really does not rain
here unless it’s a medium to big storm. Even then, the sun
often comes out at least a little bit every day. And it’s
basically been sunny now in mid-July for over a week.
Many people here are very friendly! We have had all kinds of
offers to use other’s boats. In the end, we mostly use a
friend’s old boat because "nothing about it is worth more than
$50.” We are still careful with it, but we don’t have to
worry about scratching the inflatable boat because it already is
nicely scratched up!
Others tidbits… on these San Juan Islands, the bear, deer and
apparently fox, all swim between islands! Some deer have been
hand fed, so they will, near the places they have been fed, come
right up to a person.
We are very grateful for The Caretaker Gazette and the caretaker
opportunities that they publish! I don’t know how we could have
ever found this position without it bridging the gap for us!
Thank you!

Sara and Jeff enjoying the sunshine in Puget Sound

HELP NEEDED. Great to bring your RV or tiny home and enjoy the
nature and fresh food. We have a private farm with almost two
acres of yard to care for on a crop farm with about 30 acres of
crops and 40 acres of woods. The house is not for the stay, just
the yard. A handyperson can figure out how to hook up his/her RV
or tiny home to the electric and well running into the house.
Locally there is kayaking on the river, the Hope House, the
Scotland Neck Bird Reserve, Albemarle Sound, Edenton, and Little
Washington. Located two hours from Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. One
hour to Greenville (Civilization), and two and a half hours to
Raleigh. We rent the farmland to an old friend who has the right
to come and go to check on his crops, but after planting you will
not see him too much until harvest time, but he is pleasant,
helpful, and full of local knowledge. Ultimately, we are looking
for a long-term property manager who could help turn the home
into a vacation rental or add cottages and make a bed and
breakfast or campground, or storage facility. We can arrange for
the property manager to share in the profits or pay a flat rent
and enjoy any profit beyond the set amount. Housesitters can
plant what they would like to in the garden. Hunt if it is
hunting season. We also need the housesitters to take care of the
yard and garden, mow the lawn, pull weeds, dispose of dead
flowers and debris, harvest the nuts, fruit, berries, grapes so
that they do not attract rodents. Also, if possible there are
some repairs, paint, and remodeling needs we could trade for a
long-term stay. We can discuss this arrangement over the phone
or after a trial week of seeing if the property is a match. For
more information please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

PORTUGAL

HELP NEEDED on my permaculture, orchard and self-construction
work in Sao Jorge, an island in the central group of the Azores
archipelago. I have a small plot of 3,000 square meters, plus a
campsite by the sea with natural pools. We are two people in this
atypical place and work an organic vegetable garden and organic
orchard, (permaculture trend) and the self-construction of a
small studio in volcanic stones and local wood. The vegetable
garden feeds us about 80% in the summer, and there is always
maintenance and new seeds to plant, vegetable liquid manure for
the vegetable garden, weeding, picking, etc. A small greenhouse
is planned and a henhouse for a few hens for our needs in fresh
eggs. Help is needed in the vegetable garden, in the orchard, and
to take care of young fruit trees and a little on the wood
construction (according to experience), on the ground, to
strengthen the small stone walls ... and a lot of other little
things. Currently, we are looking for someone with experience in
organic gardening, around 40 - 60 years old, who is able to help
us or to work alone from time to time, with knowledge of plants
and organic vegetables. A good handyman with experience would
also be welcome. We are also responsible for a campsite 15 km
from our land, with a Snack Bar currently opening. The campsite
is open, the Snack Bar opens at the beginning of August, so there
is a possibility of reception in both places. It depends on the
competence of the person. A sleeping bag and rain gear are
required (and yes, it rains in the Azores too and it's good for
nature). Wi-Fi is available everywhere on the island. We live a
healthy lifestyle free from alcohol and drugs. Do not hesitate to
contact us to find out more, and introduce yourself a little, to
try to get to know each other better. Sincerity is essential. If
you are in Portugal, do not hesitate to contact

entrance that needs a bit of sprucing up and some bathroom
repair. There is no laundry there, but you could jerry-rig a
washer/dryer maybe if you are handy. It is not too pretty at the
moment but has some nice woodwork, a woodstove and one entry room
that is really bright for an office during the day or ??? It also
has a storage room with shelves that is accessible by a driveway.
We are trying to update the whole house before we move in. There
is a barn that could be turned into an apartment as well, once
our home is fixed up, if you are really ambitious, but we would
need to get some more cash for that. We just have a limited
budget currently but have access to materials and rental spaces.
We’re trying to see if anyone wants to trade some hours -
either bank some hours and not pay rent for a while or work a bit
each week. It would not be best long-term to have someone in the
basement for everyone's privacy but there is the barn and RV park
area as other options for longer term. We have livestock and
fencing, feeding, etc., so working for rent and some paid work at
times is available for the near future. If you have a spouse who
can do some senior care (cooking, yard work) or an interest in
Back to Eden style organic gardening which could produce some
food, that could be an option too. If you have a business that is
not too messy we have spaces you could rent/trade/live, etc.
Please email (especially non-smoking, health nut, hunters, etc.)
what you are looking for and some info about yourself. Short or
long-term is both a possibility. It could work with kids, but
there is not a lot of room for a big crowd or wild teens. We’re
trying to keep a clean cut atmosphere here and keep Grandma
comfortable. Please email caretakergazette@gmail.com and include
“Arlington, WA” in the Subject Line for forwarding purposes.
Thanks.

SEEKING A SINGLE CARETAKER OR COUPLE for a 100-acre property in
Washington State. We are located in a rural setting in the
foothills of the North Cascade Mountains in Whatcom County, 26
miles from Bellingham. We provide an attractive well-maintained
one-bedroom and loft house and all utilities in a beautiful
setting in exchange for the caretaker(s) looking after the place
when we are away and performing some basic maintenance jobs.
Other work on the property as needed is paid at an hourly rate.
The position allows the caretaker(s) plenty of free time. Work
includes caring for three friendly goats and two cats during
owner absences about one week each month; seasonal grass
trimming, operation of tractor for winter plowing, maintenance of
equipment involving small motors, and fence and building repairs
as needed. Useful skills include basic property maintenance, use
of power equipment such as trimmers and chainsaws, and basic
small motor maintenance. Spring and summer are busier times but
still allow plenty of caretaker free time. Goat care one week
each month involves feeding, putting goats out to pasture in the
morning and back in the barn at night. Note that the main
compensation to caretaker(s) is the house and utilities.
Non-basic jobs are paid by the hour, but because of the small
number of work hours required total cash compensation is small
and the caretaker(s) will probably need some supplemental income.
Caretaker(s) must be nonsmoker, physically fit, and animal
lovers. The ideal candidate(s) will be seeking a long-term
commitment. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to
live inexpensively in a beautiful rural setting and enjoys
outdoor work. Please contact XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We have dropped our current medical insurance when the
premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to $354/month healthcare program for my
wife and I called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about
the mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties
and fees, members are exempt through a special provision in the
Affordable Care Act.
If you would like to learn more, please visit
http://bit.ly/2M2LtUO or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member
Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
