LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thanks to our caretaker-wanted ad that ran in the Gazette, we now
have a great caretaker living on our estate property. Not only
does our caretaker have the opportunity to live in one of the
most beautiful places in the world, but our caretaker is also
helping to keep our property maintained and learning some
valuable skills that they can take with them when they decide to
move on to another caretaker position. This is the second
caretaker we’ve had through the ads we’ve run in the Gazette
and both have been the best caretakers we’ve ever had! Thank
you for your publication and having some of the best people
available! Sara J., WI

Sara, I'm glad to hear that your caretaker-wanted ad in the
Gazette resulted in positive responses to help you with your
property needs there. It sounds like your property will be in
good hands. Please spread the good word about the Gazette to
other property owners in your area who can use it.

As I have previously told you over the phone, I don’t use
computers. I’m so glad that when I last called, you told me all
about the new positions that you email to all subscribers every
week. Here’s my son’s email address enclosed. As you said,
please send new positions to my son’s email address every week,
and then I’ll just ask him to call me, and he can read the new
positions to me over the phone. Jane L., Trenton, NJ

Jane, we’re glad to help you. We’ll email new
opportunities to your son’s email address numerous times every
week, so this way you’ll be getting hundreds of new
opportunities that you won’t see in the issues because
sometimes homeowners need to find people immediately.

I just subscribed to your publication, but I have never taken
care of someone else’s house before. I have always lived in the
city in a small apartment. Can you provide me with any tips on
the best way to be accepted as either a housesitter or property
caretaker? Thanks. Larry R. Portland, OR

Hi Larry, thanks for asking. Here are some tips, for you that
should prove helpful:

1. Determine if you want to be a housesitter or a property
caretaker. A housesitter normally just takes care of the
homeowner’s pets and plants in exchange for rent-free living
and no compensation. A property caretaker will also take care of
the homeowner’s pets and plants but has many more
responsibilities and will be compensated for them, in addition to
the free housing provided.

2. Have a one-page list of your references prepared and ready to
send out immediately. Anyone who has common sense, positive
references, and is in good health can be a housesitter or
property caretaker. If you have previously taken care of
someone’s home, your reference list should include the names
and phone numbers of the homeowner’s where you have been a
housesitter/property caretaker. If you have never been a
housesitter/property caretaker, your reference list should
include professional references on your list, such as your
employer, doctor, attorney, landlord, etc. Homeowners want to
know you're responsible and trustworthy!

3. Have a one-page resume prepared and ready to send out
immediately. Keep it simple and to the point. Be sure that
everything on your resume, especially your contact information,
is up to date.

4. Read the rent-free living assignments in The Caretaker Gazette
very carefully and make sure the assignment is right for you. If
you don't think that you are interested in an assignment, please
do not waste your time or the homeowners' time by applying for
assignments that you don't think you will accept.

ICELAND

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED from August 22 to August 31.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX volunteers will have the opportunity to work
on the historical island of Vioey for the 17th year in a row with
our host, the city of Reykjavik. Vioey or “Wood Island” is a
popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign
visitors. The island is covered by many species of plants and at
least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Vioey
was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th
century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people
lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. There is a regular
ferry connection between the island and the harbor of Reykjavík.
The island is only a few hundred meters away from the city and
the trip takes a few minutes. This makes Vioey so special; it is
a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the
capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and
there is no motor traffic allowed. It also features intriguing
sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars
that comprise Richard Serra’s work Afangar and Yoko Ono’s
“Imagine Peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported
by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Vioey
are related to archaeological research. Volunteers will help
prepare the island for the autumn/winter season. Volunteers will
beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially
along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or
collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the
shores and surroundings. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX volunteers may
carry out some gardening activities as well and possibly make and
maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to
visit the area without damaging it and this important work also
helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of
the project and weather conditions, volunteers may have other
possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden
furniture. The working day normally runs from 09:00 - 17:00 with
breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some
flexibility due to the nature of Iceland's changeable weather, as
we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities
planned. The temperature in late August can drop during the
evenings. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and
work in all kinds of weather, as it can get cold and rainy. The
working plan is flexible, and it will depend on the needs of our
host. No previous experience is necessary. Since most of the work
will take place outdoors, it is recommended to bring warm and/or
waterproof clothes (overcoats, scarves, gloves, and hats) walking
shoes/boots. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX volunteers will be lodged in a
local house on Vioey Island, in shared rooms. The facilities are
equipped with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Everyone
is expected to show consideration for their companions. Please
bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food
supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please
note the food XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX provides will be vegetarian.
Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks,
recipes, music, games, or movies from your country for the
intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients
may be expensive in Iceland, and you will need to buy them
yourselves or bring them from your country. For more information,
please visit XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Living Rent-Free in Normandy: Rebecca Ivie

Interests: Art and Art History, sculpture, writing, hiking,
plants, travel, and books. Not necessarily in that order.
Quote: “Art is the highest form of hope.” Gerhard Richter

Rebecca on a visit to St Malo

Caretaking is relatively new to me. I started a few years ago
doing house and pet-sitting near my home-base in Northwest
Washington state. After a few short term house-sits, friends told
friends that I was available and some jobs in beautiful areas
including the San Juan Islands and California came about.
I grew up in the Bay Area of Northern California. We had horses
and dogs and a cat and a lot of oak and olive trees. I went to UC
Santa Cruz and graduated with a combined Art/Art History degree.
That summer I moved to Seattle, where I lived for five years. I
raised my children in a small town north of Seattle. While my
kids were growing up, I worked part-time jobs as a Brightworker
(boat varnishing), librarian and soccer coach. I also ran a small
landscaping business for about six years, and most recently,
spent 15 years as a Retail Manager. My hobbies include hiking in
the local forestlands, reading a lot, writing, gardening and clay
sculpture.
I began subscribing to The Caretaker Gazette a few years ago. I
had raised my children, (they are all in their late 20s now) and
was ready for something new. A close friend recommended I look
for caretaking work to get a fresh perspective, a change of
scene. Over the next few years, there were jobs that almost
happened. Memorable ones included Costa Rica, Wyoming and New
Mexico. Life intervened a few times, making my leaving
impossible; one time I chickened out (there were snakes). Another
time, after agreeing to a three month stay in another state,
telling all of my friends, quitting my job and making plans, the
owner abruptly changed her mind and really pulled the rug out
from under me.
My advice to anyone looking for this type of work is to do your
homework; ask to speak to former caretakers if possible. I was in
touch with a former caretaker whose advice and understanding were
crucial to my experience in France. I now consider her a friend.
Ask for references. If something goes wrong, it’s not like you
can turn someone in to the Caretaker Police. You are trusting
someone you don’t know to be honest and forthright. The good
news is, most people are.
One of the jobs I applied for in late winter of 2018 was for a
garden caretaking position in rural France. I heard back from the
owners right away. We exchanged a few emails and then they chose
someone else. I forgot all about it. Then, in April of 2019, I
got an email from these same people in France asking if I was
interested in the job for the summer. I had two jobs at the time
and hadn’t been actively looking for caretaking jobs, but it
only took me a few minutes to know that I would be going to
France.
How many times in a life do you get a chance for an experience
like this?
When I told people I was going to France, they invariably asked
“How did you find out about this job?” I told them all about
The Caretaker Gazette.
The job was in Normandy, for three months, taking care of a
Chateau “potager”, or kitchen garden for 20 - 25 hours per
week in exchange for a two bedroom, one bath apartment in the
Chateau. Some family dinners and fresh vegetables and fruit from
the garden were included. The Chateau, built in 1852, sits on 50
acres of forest with large grass lawns around the house. I was
only responsible for the potager, which was one acre including
six large raised beds with all kinds of vegetables, a 60-foot row
of heirloom tomatoes, fruit trees, olive trees, eight very
productive grapevines on a large trellis, some gravel areas and
grass as well as a “Gardener’s Cottage” where tools were
stored and seeds started. It was a lot to take care of,
especially in the height of summer when watering, sometimes twice
a day was necessary. The water system there was very antiquated
and a challenge to use. It was a relief when the hot days ended
and the rains came. Of course, with the rain came more mowing. I
watered, mowed the grass, weeded, planted fall and overwinter
vegetables and harvested. There were a million tomatoes and more
grapes and zucchini (courgette, in French) than we could eat. In
September there were a few cold days and then a warm Indian
Summer. The climate in Normandy is much like where I live in the
Pacific Northwest. The plant hardiness zone is the same, Zone 8,
so I was familiar with many of the plants there as well as the
weeds.
The chateau is family home run as a business by the Expat
owners, one being a cookbook author who takes visiting clients on
tours of the surrounding area, teaches French cuisine and cooks
gourmet meals.
A forty-minute bus ride from the chateau is Rouen. It’s a
wonderful city - winding cobblestone streets with colorful
half-timber buildings, the Seine River, well-curated museums,
thriving outdoor markets of French antiques or Brocante and
amazing food. If you have a chance, go. It is a mini Paris,
friendly and knowable and close to the beautiful west coast of
France.

The Chateau, built in 1852

View of the Potager, or kitchen garden

I was able to get to Paris, if I made the best bus and train
connections, by 10 am. This was a rare opportunity to have access
to one of the great cities of the world and I took full advantage
of that. I spent about 15 days in Paris, riding the Metro,
visiting museums, eating all kinds of food and just walking for
hours. I don’t think I would ever get tired of it.
I have a deep, lifelong interest in Art and Art History, so I
was constantly inspired by what I saw in museums and on trips in
and around Normandy. I have always loved the Impressionists, and
Normandy is where that movement began. Eugene Boudin influenced
Claude Monet and from Monet… well, Impressionism followed.
Monet’s former home and now a museum, Giverny is touristy, but
worth it to someone who loves painting. Monet is also famous for
painting the Rouen Cathedral more than 30 times and is much
celebrated there. I felt like the landscape was a familiar old
friend. Honfleur, Etretat, Dieppe, Deauville… all along the
Normandy coast, these were landscapes weirdly familiar to me
because of the paintings I had known since I was in school. My
favorite museum is Musee d’Orsay in Paris. They have a huge
collection of Impressionist work and more sculpture than most big
museums.
This past summer was the 77th anniversary of D-day and the
Battle of Normandy. I was lucky to meet a US expat there, through
the chateau owners, who is one of the last living survivors at
Normandy. He has lived in France for over 50 years. His stories
about the Nazis occupying the Chateau and other places nearby and
about trading his cigarettes for food during the war brought that
time and place to life for me. He’s 93, still very active, has
never smoked and still plays a mean game of Horseshoes.
The town nearest the Chateau is a modest, mostly farming
community of 3,500 people. It was a 2.5-mile walk to town and I
walked that route many times. Rolling hills of corn and turnips
and hay dominated the fields. I saw three types of cows, sheep,
horses and one favorite house where an old woman had a menagerie
of ducks, chickens, one turkey, three small dogs and a litter of
kittens all in the same messy yard surrounding her historic
French farmhouse. There were two Boulangeries in town that made
incredible bread and patisserie. I think I tried it all. Monday
farmers markets saw the town square filled with vendors selling
fish, pastries, vegetables, handmade sausage, basic clothing
items, plants and sometimes furniture. While I was living there,
a new, fancy grocery store opened up, (there were already three
grocery stores) and people were incredibly excited about it. It
should come as no surprise that food and access to food is a big
deal there. Interesting fact: I never saw one obese person the
whole time I was in France.
A lot of people ask me about the language and how I dealt with
that. I took French in high school and tried to study as much as
I could before I left. English was spoken at the Chateau, so I
didn’t learn any French there. Many people speak English in
France; bus drivers, store clerks, but interestingly, not the
doctor I visited when I got sick.
I did have to use my French at times. This usually ended up
being a humorous and fun experience where we used our limited
vocabularies, hands and some form of Franglaise to understand
each other. I enjoyed it all, and I did improve, especially in my
ability to read French. I think when you are surrounded by a
language, it seeps into you. Of course, there were times when I
had no idea what someone was saying to me. Then a heartfelt,
“Pardon, je suis Anglaise” would usually do the trick.
Because my commitment was 20 - 25 hours per week, I did have
plenty of time for travel. I had trips to Paris where I
reconnected with an old childhood friend as well as trips to the
coast. We escaped a heatwave by going to Blondville-sur-mer, one
of the most beautiful old-timey beach communities I have ever
seen. Saint-Malo, a medieval walled city on the southern coast,
was also a highlight. If you have read the novel, “All the
Light You Cannot See”, it was set there and in Paris.
I also spent time just hanging out. The chateau was incredibly
quiet and peaceful much of the time. I was able to make some
progress on a writing project, read a few books, draw, and do two
small sculptures with local clay.
There were challenges along the way: The owners were abroad for
over a month and during that time, I got very ill from ingesting
tainted water. I needed help navigating the French medical
system, which is really quite good, and a very strong antibiotic.
I relied on the kindness of some US expats living nearby, and
some doctor friends consulting in the U.S. It was a tough time -
being alone and sick in a foreign country is not fun. Next time I
go to Europe, I will take more meds with me. I will take
Pepto-Bismol for sure, as it is not available there.
I wish I had taken less gear. I was happy to have my nice garden
clippers, gloves and my favorite tool- a Japanese Hori-Hori
knife, but I could have made do with less clothing. Travel light
if you can. I stayed just under three months, so I didn’t need
to deal with getting a work visa. I’ve heard that can be tricky
in France.
I am hoping to go abroad again soon. I would love to find
something related to Innkeeping or another garden related job in
Europe, especially in the U.K. Meanwhile, I’m home taking care
of my garden, which is a mess after me being gone for three
months. I’m also dreaming a little about what comes next while
reading the new ads in The Caretaker Gazette.

NEW ZEALAND

COME AND EXPERIENCE CHRISTCHURCH, SOUTH ISLAND, and help run an
award-winning historic heritage backpacker hostel! This city has
so much to offer with beaches, bars, walking, and retail therapy.
The hostel is actually a former prison and will be one of your
most interesting experiences and accommodations in New Zealand!
We're looking for a friendly and enthusiastic Evening
Receptionist starting ASAP and staying for two months. You must
have a current Working Holiday Visa or the legal ability to work
in New Zealand. This is a work in exchange for accommodation
position (12-14 hours of work per week). As the Night Manager
(six nights a week), you will be doing emails, charging, checking
laundry, and greeting and helping guests with their bookings,
requests, and questions about New Zealand. You will then be
getting the hostel ready for the nighttime after a busy day of
prison life (cleaning and restocking communal areas), locking the
hostel and then answering the odd phone call so will need to stay
in the building overnight. (Some nights are busier/more chill
than others so that's why we allow the 12-14 hours!). You will
have your own room (a former cell!). Work will be interesting,
fun and you will get to meet some great people who are traveling
New Zealand and looking to escape from jail! We have a delightful
team who will make you feel at home and are always up for pizza,
movies and exploring Christchurch. Prison puns an essential! Get
in touch with us by telling us you have legal ability to work in
NZ, that you can commit to a minimum of two months, and a little
bit about yourself! Please stop by XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX to apply.

WANT TO HELP BUILD A COMMUNITY? Love the sea? After finishing the
building of our boat and our first sea-trial trip, we are
presently based on an organic apple farm 40 minutes south of
Oslo, where we are focusing on beekeeping as we intend to build
up on honey production and queen-breeding this summer. We are a
community-based project born over 10 years ago. Involving people
from all over the globe, we hope to eventually form a community
present both on land and at sea, which will cooperate with
eco-villages, sharing the bliss of sustainable living and
traveling through organic farming and sailing - connecting places
and people across the oceans. If you have any knowledge or
interest in permaculture, self-sufficiency, alternative living,
etc., don't hesitate to contact us and share your ideas. Our
hopes are for the farm to flourish into a place where food,
thoughts, plans, adventures, and - of course - boats, can grow!
Please send an email to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX explaining why you
would be interested in our community and include “Sea Gypsy
Application” in the Subject Line: so we know you have been
reading this. Love from Sailing the Farm – a sea gypsy tribe of

OHIO

CARETAKER NEEDED in the Canton/Hartville area. Looking for a
person or a couple. This is not a traditional ranch job and is
not a riding position. We currently have three horses in
residence but can be as low as two and up to six. This is a 30
acre horse facility with indoor and outdoor arena, pasture space,
and obstacle course. Although there are a large number of horses
on the property you are only responsible for the owners horses
(two to six). The current business on the property is responsible
for all arena maintenance, their horses, large barn upkeep, the
fencing of the area they are renting, client services, etc. So,
you get the experience of a large facility without all the
upkeep. We are offering a fully furnished, 980 sq. ft., newly
built bunk house attached to the barn and shop area so your daily
commute is easy, a ranch truck for running ranch errands is
available and gas for ranch truck is covered, space for a horse
or two, internet, cable with all the channels, electric, water,
washer and dryer for use in the tack room, negotiable salary
dependent upon experience and skill set and performance as well
as how many horses you bring with you. We also offer starting
paid days off away from the farm at 10 weekdays and four weekend
paid days off per year with notice, unless you have your own
horses that will be on the property when you plan to be away. If
you have no horses of your own or in your care on the property,
we are pretty reasonable with days/nights away from the property,
we just require proper notice (as long as it is when we are in
town - we travel extensively). We ask for no drama, no drugs. No
drinking when working with horses or using farm equipment. Sorry
- no children (our living space can accommodate two adults only),
no slackers. If you have a good work ethic, are self-motivated,
can prioritize and self-schedule then it’s not terribly hard
work. If you see it needs to be done - Do it. This is a private
contractor position, not an employee position. Basic duties
include feeding the horses, bathing horses as needed, basic daily
hoof care, daily mucking stalls and dry lots. There will be days
that are semi full days but more often than not work is as needed
and some days are just feeding and mucking. Please email your
resume and references to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. In 2005, the
handwriting on the wall began and the books closed on this
historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then, became my
pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true happenings
during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the open range
while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into usable
cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later in the
other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among wild
cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your sidekick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining intro with many colored pictures at lastdkcowboy.com
