CALIFORNIA

CARETAKER WANTED for a Mountain Ranch in Pollock Pines. A two
bedroom mobile home is available in exchange for help around the
ranch and house. There is room for horses, and over two acres are
already fenced for the caretaker. There is also a very rustic
cabin and plenty of trailer space available. I am looking for
somebody with experience with horses or people with

homesteading lifestyle. Help raise livestock, garden and harvest
fruit and share in the bounty. There are two trout streams on the
property. Plenty of places to garden. There is an apple orchard
over one hundred sixty years old still bearing sixteen different
varieties of apples. There are also raspberries, gooseberries and
loganberries to be harvested. Need help restoring the house that
has half fallen down - it was built in 1869. The ranch is
semi-remote, located five miles to closest neighbor but only
fifteen minutes on good roads to Pollock Pines with major
shopping stores and schools. There is excellent cell phone
reception. The ranch is in generator country which means you need
to provide your own generator - it works, as I have lived here
over twenty five years. The trailer appliances run on propane. We

essential. There are possible job opportunities with the right
people. This is a one hundred sixty acre timber property. I have

somebody interested in helping expand my lumber, cabinets and
furniture sales. Also interested in turning the ranch into an

another caretaker, so everything is not dependent upon just one
caretaker. I'm not looking for anybody that just wants a place to
hang their hat. No drug or alcohol abusers please. There is a
background check required. Please reply with your phone number to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers).

ECUADOR

SPANISH-SPEAKING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are located in the south
of the Manabí province in a small fishing town, directly
on the beach. Our prime location makes us the ideal guest lodge
and resort to take in the marvelous, seafront sunsets, providing
you with a unique place to relax and get away from it all. We are
a boutique hosteria which provides great accommodations offering
comfortable rooms complete with Wi-Fi, cable TV, air conditioning
or fan, private bathroom and hot water. Our guests and you have
access to the pool, Jacuzzi and common areas. Most of our guest
rooms have their own unique artistic decoration theme with
custom-made driftwood accents and furniture pieces. We are
looking for someone versatile who can assist in many different
areas, such as providing information about the hosteria, taking
reservations, etc. over the phone, Internet help, guest
check-in/out, guest service, provide information about local
activities, help arrange tours and such, meal preparation,
cleaning the kitchen, working the bar/cafeteria, serving guests,
help with the laundry, room cleaning, grounds maintenance, pool
and Jacuzzi maintenance (knowledge of cleaning, balancing
chemicals etc.), woodworking-sculpting, renovating the boat (on
land) for use as accommodation, and Yoga instruction or massage
ability would be great. Work five hours a day, five days a week.
Spanish speaking is a must! It would certainly be a plus and
qualify you more if you speak both Spanish and English. We are
looking for a commitment of a month minimum - obviously based on
mutual compatibility. Depending on how well we do and your
situation, perhaps an even longer term like six months would be
possible. Together we can investigate appropriate ways to extend
your stay in the country if that is the case. Accommodations will
depend on availability. You may get a room. If there is more than
one volunteer, you may share that room with others. If the rooms
are full, you might be captain for a while and live aboard the
boat dry docked near the pool. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will
be provided. You will be able to do your laundry here too. We
have Wi-Fi! The beach is right here so you can enjoy sun, sand
and sea. There are tours to Isla de la Plata. You can visit other
close by National Park areas such as Los Frailes, San Sebastian
and Agua Blanco. Enjoy the local artisans selling their wares
around town. See firsthand the busy fishing trade near the modern
pier area. You can walk around most of the main town to tiendas
(stores), panaderias (pastry shops), clothing and many other
businesses. You also can take a moto-taxi around town. When
contacting us, please include details of all the areas you have
experience and capability of assisting us in. Depending on who we
have working with us currently, there are specific needs we are
looking to fill. The more of our specialized needs you are in a
position to contribute to, the better a candidate you may be.
Thanks so much for considering working with us. We look forward
to communicating with you soon! Please contact

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS anytime between May and August 2015 only.
We are a Kiwi/Aussie couple in our late 30's/early 40's with a
primary schooler and a baby. Our eco guest house in beautiful
banos is a popular destination for tourists from all around the
world, including Ecuadorian. We are looking for volunteer(s) to
help with our guests; meeting and greeting, explaining about the
surrounds and what activities are on offer, help organize taxis
and activities (usually just a phone call is needed). For this
position, it is important that you are outgoing, friendly, can
problem solve, like chatting with people, can initiate
conversations and can talk on a range of topics (hence why we ask
for people from late 20's onwards who have a little bit of life
experience). The work is fun as you'll get to meet many people
from all walks of life and hopefully make some long-term
friendships. The work is usually pretty easy also. We just need
someone here who can speak English, as many of our guests don't
speak Spanish, and make them feel comfortable. Of course, it's
important to speak and understand Spanish also (which means
speaking Spanish on the phone sometimes). We ask for eight hours
a day for five days, 40 hours on average for the week. This will
usually be 2-10pm or 3-11pm and at least one day over the weekend
could also be required. Also note that this time isn't usually
spent doing physical hard work. Basically we need a presence in
the reception area, there is a lot of down time so there'll be
plenty of time for you to catch up on emails, surf the Internet,
further study your Spanish, play the guitar, read a book or
whatever you fancy. Although we say 40 hours of work per week,
usually you'll only be 'working' for up to three to five hours a
day. The main thing is that you're here, in and around the guest
house, for at least eight hours a day. When there are few (or no)
guests, you can do the shopping, help in our organic garden or
other various projects we have around the place. We have
wonderful local employees to do the cooking and cleaning so it'd
be very rare for you to need to contribute with these. You may
need to help serve meals some evenings though. You will be
available for a minimum of three weeks. You will be compensated
with a free private room with bathroom, breakfast, discounted
Spanish lessons, drinking water, tea/coffee/drinking chocolate,
Wi-Fi and a great space to chill. If you're still interested in
the role, please get in touch and we'll talk further. Thanks and
chao for now. Please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers)

Reborn in Retirement
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads
is available only to Gazette subscribers)
Date of Birth: Jim Mohn 10/13/1945
Interests: Photography, sports, travel, gardening, people and
helping others.
Quote: Victory in life comes from serving others.

Housesitting in paradise creates miles of smiles

Six years ago, my wife and I were in the final stages of planning
our retirement. We had worked our entire lives building a nice
retirement portfolio for travel and living comfortably. Then all
hell broke loose. We had our identity stolen. We lost everything!
A $3,000,000.00 portfolio was lost and we were harnessed with an
additional $450,000.00 in debt due to the theft. All of this in
an eight hour period.
We were too late in our life to rebuild our retirement and after
working so hard for 40 plus years, we were tired of the high
pressure job and everything that goes with it. We started looking
for a way not to live, but just survive. A friend of ours
suggested we look into The Caretaker Gazette. Not knowing what it
was, we discovered the best way was to subscribe.
We perused the ads for a full year before we decided to "take the
plunge." We started the process of contacting people in various
parts of the United States, Europe, Great Britain, The Caribbean,
Australia, Central and South America. We wanted a warm climate
or a very interesting location. The Gazette did not disappoint.
There were many ads to choose from. We sent letters out to
Hawaii, The Caribbean, Florida, Spain and Baja California,
Mexico. We received responses from four of the five that we sent
out. All were interested in us and we had never had any
caretaking experience.
We were finalists in all four of the opportunities. We had to
pull out of the offer in Spain since you can only get a 180 day
visa and the opportunity was for nine months. So we were down to
three. All offered interesting opportunities. Hawaii, perfect
weather, a house on the beach, a little money and a six month
commitment. The Caribbean, a small bungalow near the beach,
perfect weather, a little money and commitment for as long as we
wanted, if we worked out.
Then we met "The Captain and Tennille." (Not their real names and
no, they are not the musical group.) We had phone interviews with
them and we just seemed to strike up a very good relationship
over the phone. The Captain pilots a 1935 all wooden 75' speed
yacht and his wife is the chef on board. She is also the first
mate or anything else she needs to be. They pilot the yacht for
the better part of the year. Part of that time is spent preparing
the yacht for the season as well as preparing it for winter
quarters. After long conversations and investigations, they
offered us the opportunity to come to Florida and housesit for
them and their two cats. We felt such a bond with them, we knew
that this should be our first "shot" at housesitting. We had a
garage sale, packed up the rest and headed for a little town in
central Florida. We arrived at The Captain and Tennille's very
nice home and enjoyed a dinner with them and their neighbors.
What a welcome!
The Captain and Tennille had employed several housesitters over
the years and were not sure they wanted to continue down this
road, but they were going to try it one more time. I must mention
that previous housesitters had not come through The Caretaker
Gazette. We spent a few days with our homeowners to go over all
of the requirements, rules, duties, area contacts, neighbors
names and everything else you might need in their absence.
Our first year of housesitting proved to be both enjoyable and
challenging. As nice as the house is, there were several issues
that came up that we took care of, with the owner's approval. We
cared for the house, pool, property and beach like it was our
own.
A typical week would consist of: feeding the cats, watering the
gardens, plants and flowers. Groom the beach and weed many of the
beds and berms on the beach. Pick any fruit or vegetables and eat
them. Mow the lawn and trim various areas. Keep the house and
pool clean. Play with and love the cats. Meet and talk with the
neighbors and occasionally have dinner together. Do any required
maintenance that happens to come up. Keep the lawn and garden
equipment in good operating condition and do any odd jobs that
happen to come up while the owners are absent. Pick the owners up
at the airport when they get a few days to come home and see
their house and cats. And finally, enjoy the beautiful sunsets on
the lake.
We are living a great life without the money, but a great deal of
love and friendship. We are very fortunate to call The Captain
and Tennille friends and share many times with them when they are
home during the winter. Are the owners as pleased as we are? I
assume they are since they have asked us to continue to housesit
for them as long as we and they like.
What is our secret? First marry a woman as charming as my wife.
Always be a visitor but know that you are at home and take care
of it as it were your own. Pay attention to details. Do the
little extras that mean so much yet require so little. Stay in
touch with the owners and send pictures of their pets.
We still peruse the Gazette to look for short term opportunities
for December to the middle of March, but we are very happy doing
what we are doing with "The Captain and Tennille" and plan on
keeping our friendship and our housesitting position with them as
long as they will have us.

The sun is always shinning on these first time housesitters

MAINE

HELP NEEDED in a farmhouse in Downeast Maine. Our farmhouse is in
a rural setting, in Washington County surrounded by forest,
farmland, lakes, and a spectacular sea coast. Our Farmstead is
totally organic and vegetarian and we have large gardens. Most of
last year, and so far this one too, we have been completing the
renovation of our home, so there are still little jobs to get
done in the house while out in the yard there are chickens and
vegetable plots to care for. In addition in the spring and summer
we have several building or landscaping projects in progress
where help is appreciated and during the quieter months the work
may also include some general house and yard cleaning, snow
clearance, fire wood cutting and stacking and other preparations
for the winter. If you are looking for somewhere to hang out for
a while in a fresh and interesting location and have a good
attitude towards work and communication then we think we should
appeal. This is not a paid position, the position is a volunteer
position and free accommodation is provided during the volunteer
period. The volunteer commitment is generally 20 to 25 hours a
week except in the three winter months when it may drop to about
10 hours a week. We're not very formal but as you will be sharing
our home with our children occasionally when we stay at the
property, we do require a photocopy/scanned picture of a legal
Photo ID (driving license, state ID, or passport) to be supplied
before arrival as proof of identity. Accommodation maybe in the
main farmhouse, in an off-the-grid caretaker's cabin close to the
farmhouse, or Flower cottage on a prop- erty nearby. Please email
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) for more info.

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want
to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.
Anyone who helps us out will have the chance to join our crew. We
also work on the farm, building up the infrastructure to create a
stable base for our community. On the boat side the biggest thing
is that all the inner plating and insulation are all finished up,
the bathroom (wet-room) is plated and all water tanks are welded
into position. Next big thing is to get the engine into the boat.
We have to lift it up three meters and then two meters sideways.
It's a little messy but we are working on this right now. Weight
of the engine is around 500 kg so we need a hoist-system. The
volunteers took some days off to hitch-hike to the west coast,
and came happily back home with pictures of fiords, and camping
outside in the mountains close to the glaciers. The summer has
been extremely warm one so contrary to what I was thinking that
they will almost freeze to death they got back to the farm
sun-burned with a happy smile on their faces. During the next few
weeks we will be harvesting what we have been planting this year
and we will work on the engine and rigging, so if you have any
skills you might think will be useful please feel free to contact
us. We also looking for crew for sailing across the Atlantic,
heading towards Cuba when the boat is finished so if you find
that fancy please contact us. Please send an email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) explaining why you would
be interested in our community and please place this in the
Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you have been
reading this. Love from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information

gypsy tribe of tomorrow!
